I spent six nights sleeping on the floor in a very modest Japanese house. Wooden floor, not fancy tātāmi mats. Just a 'futon' - that is, a 5cm thick foam pad.

As a middle-aged man with back problems and more, you'd think that would be simply painful and uncomfortable, and you'd be wrong.

It was far worse than that. It has been torturous. Far out.

I love Japan and the Japanese but wtf this is not a sensible sleeping arrangement.

Talk about an embarrassment of riches. I received 10 new books yesterday. (Seven are by women, and the books represent five countries on three different continents, in case you're curious.) The day before, publicists sent me three books I wasn't expecting. The day before that, I received an assignment to review four other books. It appears that *more* books will arrive from yet another publisher tomorrow. I'll do my best to come up for air now and then. #Books #Bookstodon #NotComplaining
