There are two ways in which #muddle can be used as a kind of insurance policy:

Something about #muddle, I suppose.

If anyone has read my pinned posts about what "muddle" is, you may think that it's cute but ultimately niche. I can agree with that. However, it is something that I've been thinking about for quite a while. Ever since I read the original Chaffing and Winnowing paper, in fact.

People reading that paper for the first time might also think that the need (or rationale) for such a scheme is maybe the stuff of conspiracy theories. However, we don't have to look far to consider the idea that "TPTB" might want to restrict the use of encryption, putting it beyond the abilities/use of regular folk. It's not a conspiracy theory to suggest this. For example, when PGP came out, US agencies tried to make it illegal by classifying it as a munition. It's only because of a loophole (the printed source code being legal to import) that they realised that the genie was out of the bottle and they couldn't stop it from spreading.

If you follow cryptography or digital rights in general, you should be able to see a clear pattern: anything that enables privacy is/has always been under attack from lawmakers. Again, this is not suggesting a conspiracy theory: it's a fact. Again and again, lawmakers and lobby groups have teamed up to try and promote the idea that cryptography is not something that should be in the hands of regular citizens, and that the only people who are interested in using it are supporting either terrorists or paedophiles. For someone like myself, who understands not just the technology but the history involved, it becomes quite tiresome...

So, #muddle can be considered as quite niche right now, but I can definitely see the direction of travel regarding laws surrounding encryption, and I present it as a possible "get-out" clause: a way of using encryption without falling foul of any future law around either requirements to present passwords (eg, UK RIP) or breaking end-to-end encryption (eg, Chat Control).
