  1. Minnesota tribal leaders call for #Biden to commute #LeonardPeltier's sentence

by Melissa Olson, January 14, 2025

"A group of over 120 elected current and former tribal leaders from across the United States are calling on President Joe Biden to grant clemency to Leonard Peltier, a longstanding political activist convicted in 1977 in the murder of two FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, according to a story first published Monday by HuffPost.

"Peltier is a member of the #AmericanIndianMovement, a grassroots Native American organization formed in Minneapolis in the late 1960s in response to police violence.

“'For the majority of his life, Leonard Peltier has been serving a sentence based on a conviction that would not hold up in court today and for a crime that the government has admitted it could not prove. Mr. Peltier’s continued incarceration is a symbol to Native Americans of the systemic inequities of the criminal justice system in America,' read the letter from tribal elected officials published on #NDNCollective.

"The letter was signed by over a dozen elected tribal officials in Minnesota, including president of the #LowerSioux Indian Community Robert Larsen, who verified the accuracy of the letter to MPR News, as well as Chair of #BoisForteBand of Chippewa Cathy Chavers and Chief Executive of the #MilleLacs Band of# Ojibwe Virgil Wind, who signed the letter as President of the Midwest Alliance of Sovereign Tribes.

"Faron Jackson, chair of the #LeechLakeBand of Ojibwe, also signed the letter. Jackson spoke to MPR News while attending the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe annual state of the band address Tuesday.

"'I think it was an injustice from day one,” said Jackson. “He’s been sitting in prison for almost 50 years on a lot of circumstantial evidence that just didn’t add up to justice.'

"Peltier, a citizen of the #TurtleMountainBand of #Chippewa in North Dakota, is currently serving two life sentences at a federal prison in Florida. Peltier has maintained his innocence since he was first imprisoned."

  6. One more photo of the ice heaves on Lake Mille Lacs. I love them.

This is the same day and general vicinity of the image I posted a few days ago.

    See my archive here:

  7. Politics on Ice.

I don't make the news, I just report it. ;-)

I love the unusual texture of the ice here and am disheartented by the fact that folks feel the need to publicly fly their political flag, even while ice fishing.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could all go out on the ice together and just get along.

  8. Sometimes Drones just give you the mobility to get the right angle or position. I like this image, because of it helps demonstrate the power and intensity of the ice on a lake of this size.

  9. I passed my Remote Pilot Certificate test today for flying Drones under 55 lbs.

Today's photo was taken yesterday near the south end of Lake Mille Lacs.

  10. Is this one over processed?

Beautiful sunset tonight. Taken with drone, but from a very low angle.

I've had a couple of good drone days this weekend.

  11. This is Mille Lacs Lake from about 10 days ago. Recently, it's frozen over again and there is fresh snow. But, this much open water at the end of December was pretty unusual.

  12. Growing up, we never saw Swans in this area. This summer, I've taken so many photos of Swans.

Here is a family with teenage children.

There were a total of 15-30 Swans within eyesight when I took this photo.

They were hanging out with small flocks of Canadian Geese.

  13. We caught a very clear video clip of a mountain lion passing through the backyard on a wildlife camera last night.

This is pretty wild! We're about 10 minutes from the Northwest corner of Mille Lacs Lake.

Mountain Lions are very rare in Minnesota, especially this part of Minnesota.

  14. On my (#90) adventure, one goal is adding a variety of images to the overall collection. Sometimes, it's not about sharing the best image of the day, but the one that will best compliment what I've already shared or bring something new to the collection.

Given how close I am to farm country, I don't have many agricultural photos.

This is along the north shore of Lake Mille Lacs.

  15. Isle, Minnesota on Lake Mille Lacs. I was passing through this afternoon and took this shot.

I don't have many shots in my collection. Here is one.

    ;-)

  16. This was about a week ago on the south end of Mille Lacs Lake. The migrating ducks were all over the place.

Most pelicans I've ever seen. They just pass through here.

  17. A couple of days ago I posted some photos of the piles of ice that accumulate as the ice goes off Lake Mille Lacs.

This is my official entry on that topic.

    🙂

  18. After an exciting winter of drone photography, I was so very much looking forward to the change of seasons. In particular, the breaking up of the ice on Lake Mille Lacs.

For a few moments, I was sure that I would miss it while attending in Chicago last week. However, I returned just in time and it's been great.

Too many good photos, not sure which ones to share. I love the mix of broken ice and open water in this bay near SE corner of lake.

  19. In a break from my daily drone photo series, let me share these interesting (not necessarily good) photos taken today.

The north side of the lake is mostly clear of ice, while the wind pushes the ice southwest. Mille Lacs Lake has 207 square miles of surface area.

The ice is coming off Mille Lacs Lake (in early May) and as the wind blows it against shore it grates together and forms piles, up to 10ft high, of ice chips on the ice and near shore.

  20. Photo from last week. Still a little snow and ice at the time. Near Mille Lacs Lake.

  21. Staring at this photo taken yesterday, helps me calm down from my social media induced stress. I'm looking for a bit of sunlight this afternoon.

Life is hard and people can be so very judgemental of choices different from their own. It makes me quite sad and even angry.

  22. Very productive excursion today around Mille Lacs Lake. Three flights along the east and northern edges of the lake.

More photos from this trip are coming...

  23. #1) It's a bit of a stretch to label photos from lake as . But, I like to use the tag for this region.

#2) I've been tagging a bunch of content as and only last night realized that is the wrong spelling. I have a long history in this region, but am not a native. And, I'm a bad speller.

#3) I've edited some of my past posts to use the correct spelling of . But, I guess I'll most of them as they are.

  24. This is from a few weeks ago. It's not the best photograph, but I think it's interesting in that it shows the network of plowed roads and the number of folks out there ice fishing on a big lake like Mille Lacs. Many empty spaces where fish houses have been moved elsewhere on the lake or removed entirely for the night or week.

  25. While there is no shortage of photos of the Big Fish in Garrison, Minnesota, the drone does allow us to get a different angle than usual.
