A powerful view of Bowen Falls in Milford Sound, New Zealand 🇳🇿
Did you know these falls are 162 meters tall? They are one of only two permanent waterfalls in the sound. Because the surrounding rocks are sheer and non-porous, a heavy rainfall can create hundreds of temporary "ghost falls" within minutes, but Bowen Falls remains a constant, thundering presence 🌊

All Connected is a small section of Baron Falls in #NewZealand #MilfordSound
At the time I had a telephoto lens where one of the backing screws was loosening from time to time (replaced it after the trip) which was creating a bit of a soft-focus effect as the glass was off angle from the sensor a tiny bit, so I used that to pick out this small section of the falls.

The Alpine fault is overdue for another big slide with a 75% probability of that happening within the next 50 years.
New research shows that an earthquake-triggered Milford Sound tsunami would almost certainly kill around 3,500 people. The expected 17m tsunami would hit the town within a couple of minutes and there is no safe evacuation point for most punters.
Tourists are blissfully unaware.

Stirling Falls II by Steve Berkley
Stirling Falls is one of only two permanent (year-round) waterfalls in Milford Sound. At 508 feet high, it is the second tallest.

I know I'm late to #silentsunday but I found this old moody photo of Milford Sound in New Zealand. Fjordland in the South Island is one of the most spectacularly beautiful places I've been.

Very fortunate to have visited #milfordsound twice on the west coast of #newzealand and it wasn't misty and raining on this occasion in October 2022. It is a very special place named after Milford in #Wales and is in fact a #fjord rather than a sound! Normally the wind blows so strong, it blows the waterfalls upwards.
