  1. A secret canyon in Australia hides one of Earth's rarest wild trees — a species thought extinct for 2 million years. Only 89 remain.
Their location is classified. Researchers are blindfolded. Protection is extreme.

This is the story of the Wollemi Pine:
    • Its accidental rediscovery
    • A disease that almost erased it
    • A covert firefighting mission during Australia’s Black Summer
    • How flooding the world with “dinosaur trees” may be the only way to save them

A 200-million-year-old living fossil — nearly lost the moment we found it.

  6. “Jurassic Tree Lives Again”: 200-Million-Year-Old ‘Dinosaur Tree’ Successfully Bred in Stunning Scientific Breakthrough

New seeds means a fresh admixture of DNA from one of a few survivors of these ancient trees, which is different from plants grown from a cutting (ie: a genetic clone).

  16. It's remarkable the Wollemi Pine has survived for over 200 million years. Ice ages, asteroids, you name it, nothing has stood in its way!

🌲 The Botanic Gardens of Sydney
team has planted 40 fresh seedlings at the Blue Mountain Botanic Garden Mount Tomah, celebrating 30 years since its discovery.

    Wollemi Pine

    This tree was doing everything.

  22. Today I took the day off work and went with my mother to the Melbourne Flower and Garden Show. It was a beautiful sunny day and a perfect temperature for a stroll in the Carlton Gardens to see the exhibits.

There were also plants for sale including the Wollemi Pine (photographed here). It was exciting seeing so many of them and feeling their leaves. I wish our time backyard was big enough to grow one.

  27. The #WollemiPine was long thought extinct. Now experts are trying to regrow the tree in top secret locations

"It was thought to have gone #extinct 2 million years ago, until 1994, when a park ranger stumbled across a grove of these #prehistoric giants. There are less than 90 #WollemiPines remaining in that single grove west of #Sydney... Just like the original grove, the whereabouts of the translocation sites are kept top secret."

Wondering out loud if any commensal insects survived with the #WollemiPine trees? That'd be quite the entomological expedition.
