  14. I feel very old today, after having to explain what #microfiche was to other teachers in my MEd program.

    Ruined a great joke/commentary.

  20. #Technology that I don't think ever existed, but which *should* have...

    The #microfiche #typewriter. [1]

It is a typewriter very closely resembling an #IBM #Selectric electric typewriter. The keyboard is virtually identical, though the platen and print head are different. Instead of the platen being a rubber roller, there is a slot with guides, into which you drop a standard-sized plastic film sheet - a #fiche.

The type element - the "ball" - is identical to a normal Selectric element, except for size. It's only a few millimetres in diameter. Typing is virtually silent, because the ball moves only a tiny, tiny amount at a time, so little you don't even notice it unless you watch for a full line of type.

Above the fiche slot is a small-ish translucent rear-projection screen, which shows the text of the page you're currently typing. Operators work in a dimly-lit room, and their faces are bathed in a diffuse, soft white light.

  25. I kinda want to do a thing where I print microfiche of my fedi feed, for two reasons:

    1. Historians love that kind of ephemera that shows what daily life is like, and much of fedi will probably not survive for historians to see.

    2. I think microfiche is cool.

  31. Remember microfilm? They made it cool! The library had one of those manual readers that have existed since forever, but they also have this computer-aided scanner. Nothing like slapping in a roll and hitting fast-forward.

I've always kind of enjoyed #microfiche ; I'd love to find a computer output microfiche device (print to fiche) but they're rare and expensive :(
I have some #retrocomputing documentation on fiche, electronic circuit references and science magazine 82-93 or something like that lol. I have a portable viewer in addition to the one in the workshop lol. There's something about analog high density storage and the 'archive feel' that my brain likes I guess.
