  3. Obon: Japan’s festival of ancestors
Held August 13–16, #Obon is a #Buddhist festival to honor ancestors’ spirits. Families light lanterns to guide souls home, while Bon Odori dances fill the streets with joy. Kyoto’s Obon stands out for Gozan no Okuribi: five giant mountain kanji fires illuminating the night sky. A moving blend of memory, light, and tradition. #JapaneseCulture #Matsuri #Summertime

  4. Sendai Tanabata Matsuri: the festival of star-crossed lovers
Held August 6–8 in Sendai, this is one of Tohoku’s Three Great Festivals. Vibrant paper decorations and streamers fill the streets, celebrating the legendary meeting of the star lovers Orihime and Hikoboshi. Born from a Chinese legend, the festival symbolizes hope and romantic dreams. A breathtaking blend of color, tradition, and celestial wonder. #JapaneseCulture #Tanabata #Matsuri #Summer #Festivals

  5. Akita Kanto Matsuri: the festival of balance and light
Held August 3–6 in Akita, this is one of Tohoku’s Three Great Festivals. Performers balance towering kanto poles (up to 12 meters tall, with 46 paper lanterns) on their palms, shoulders, or foreheads to the rhythm of "dokkoisho!" chants. Born in the 1780s as a harvest prayer, the lanterns symbolize rice bales and prosperity. A breathtaking blend of skill, tradition, and community spirit. #JapaneseTraditions #Matsuri #Festivals

  6. Aomori Nebuta Matsuri: the festival of light and myth
Held August 2–7 in Aomori, this is one of Tohoku’s Three Great Festivals. Massive illuminated floats (up to 9 meters tall, depicting warriors and demons) parade through the streets, lit from within. Born in the Edo period as a ritual to ward off sleep during fieldwork, the floats symbolize purification and protection. A breathtaking blend of art, folklore, and community spirit. #JapaneseCulture #Matsuri #Festivals #Summer #Japan

  8. Let's start my notes on festivals with the quite common one: shrine and summer festivals. They seem to be happening almost constantly but I have to confess that after a few if them they do feel very similar. There are some more special activities, but otherwise it is just foodstslls for the common Japanese festival foods. It is certainly interesting to see a few of them, but you do not need many. #Japan #Travel #HokkaidoJingu #Sapporo #SapporoTravel #WorkingHoliday #Matsuri #JapaneseFestvals #English
