  2. The Thursday before Easter, we remember the Last Supper. Today I offer you a detail from one of the most famous artworks in the world: by Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), Christ from the Last Supper, 1495-1498, tempera on gesso, pitch and mastic, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan, Italy. #davinci #fresco #lastsupper #arthistory

From the blog “Italian Art for Travelers,” © 2023 Gerriann Brower: “Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper is one of his most admired and recognizable art works. It is iconic, has been reproduced endlessly, parodied, and woven into conspiracy theories. Sometimes we’ve seen an artwork so many times we no longer see the qualities of the masterpiece. We may not be familiar with its place in history, or know why the art challenged the status quo.

Leonardo’s painting is full of symbolic meaning, but perhaps not what you think. There are no secret messages about mysterious societies and hidden clues like Dan Brown wrote about in The Da Vinci Code (2003). This fictional story is so persuasive I have had people ask me if The Da Vinci Code is true. Without a doubt, it is a very entertaining book. However, Jesus did not impregnant Mary Magdalene, and she is not disguised as an apostle. The Roman Catholic church has not been hiding their offspring, nor is St. John disguised as a woman. The apostle St. Peter did not contrive to hide the evidence of their relationship and child. Leonardo did not belong to secret societies such as the Priory of Sion or Knights Templar. He was much too busy writing in his notebooks and studying nature.”

(Note: my approach doesn’t deny its spiritual value, but explores whether there’s a scientific basis behind the universal principles of his message.) #painting #science #religion #spirituality #philosophy #faith #truth #Jesus #LastSupper #philosophyofscience

  19. On #MaundyThursday #TheDisciplesWay is reflecting on #TheLordsSupper (Matthew 26:26-29) Rev. Troy Menendez shares a few of the wonder-full #HolyCommunion experiences he has had & I admit, I envy him these experiences. My own have been far more pedestrian & quiet, quite probably because they have all been part of regular #Episcopal worship services.

Both share characteristics with the #LastSupper Matthew describes, particularly in that they occur in community of shared faith. The disciples must have felt something significant was afoot, as Rev. Menendez’ community seems to. At the same time, with the exception of Jesus’ words, it was just another meal like those celebrated weekly in my churches. This week, especially, we know what momentous changes are coming for the disciples. That is not usually the case when someone dies. Those gathered with Jesus could not have known what lay ahead for them anymore than we do today. We just trust in God that we will be together again.

  26. Visiting the #RoyalAcademy this morning, I discovered for the first time (to my shame) the copy there of #Leonardo's #LastSupper - royalacademy.org.uk/art-artist it's not only v early, it's nearly complete (only top bit is missing). Just amazing, and much better than the sadly degraded original now... #art

  27. What is wrong with Da Vinci's last supper? The projection of the 3D image onto the 2D space is flawed. The size of the last wall carpet is about 1/2 of the first. However, the size of the back wall is only about 1/3 of the size of the table. Judging from the size of the back wall, the dinning hall is supposed to be very deep. There is something wrong with the scaling of objects in the picture making the back wall look much closer than it should be. #Bible #davinci #lastsupper #jesus #painting
