La nigromancia: la ciencia de la anatomía aplastada por el prejuicio

Cómo el estudio real del cuerpo humano y la búsqueda del conocimiento médico terminaron malditos por el miedo y la religión

Durante siglos la palabra nigromancia ha despertado imágenes de rituales oscuros y magia negra diseñada para revivir a los muertos, pero cuando revisamos los datos históricos y periodísticos nos topamos con una realidad completamente diferente. En la época medieval y el Renacimiento, los primeros médicos, científicos y artistas que sentían una profunda curiosidad por entender cómo funcionaba el interior del ser humano no tenían laboratorios ni libros de texto exactos para estudiar. La única forma real de averiguar cómo se conectaban los músculos, cómo bombeaba el corazón o cómo corrían las venas era abriendo cadáveres y examinando los órganos de primera mano, una práctica médica elemental que chocaba de frente con las leyes estrictas del clero que prohibían tocar los cuerpos de los difuntos.

El control de la iglesia sobre la sociedad de esos tiempos provocó que cualquier intento de investigación científica con restos humanos fuera visto como una práctica impía y un insulto a la divinidad, persiguiendo a los investigadores como si fueran invocadores de demonios o espectros. El caso más famoso de este acoso lo vivió el mismísimo genio Leonardo da Vinci, quien en el año 1515 fue denunciado de forma anónima ante el Papa León X por sus estudios en el hospital de Santo Spirito en Roma. Da Vinci llegó a diseccionar más de 30 cadáveres a lo largo de su vida para hacer los dibujos anatómicos más precisos de su época, pero debido a la ignorancia y al miedo de la gente de su entorno, sus enemigos usaron la etiqueta de nigromante para intentar llevarlo a prisión y destruir su trabajo.

Esta distorsión de la verdad nos demuestra cómo el poder religioso y los prejuicios sociales pueden sepultar la ciencia y el avance humano bajo toneladas de mitos y leyendas de terror. Lo que hoy conocemos como anatomía, medicina forense y cirugía moderna estuvo a punto de desaparecer porque un grupo de personas con mentes cerradas prefirió inventar cuentos de magia negra antes que aceptar que se estaba buscando la verdad sobre nuestra propia naturaleza. Conocer estas persecuciones nos recuerda el valor de defender los espacios libres de censura e ideas fijas, demostrando que la verdadera ignorancia no está en los sótanos donde se estudia la realidad con datos duros, sino en las altas esferas que buscan controlar lo que la gente tiene permitido aprender.

Lombardy’s ‘Leonardo ferry’ has carried commuters for 500 years.

On the River Adda, a ferry has been linking the two banks for more than 500 years.

It is the so-called “Leonardo’s ferry”, a Renaissance craft without an engine, ‘designed by Leonardo da Vinci’ in 1513.

The ferry has come back into use after a bridge was closed and is a model of sustainable transport, powered solely by the river’s current.
