The gift was a set of 3D printed pine needle basket weaving gauges. Which I then had to make a custom laser crafted storage box for them. Complete with a blue flocked interior. 😁 It was a gift for the person teaching the basket weaving class at my local maker space. #3Dprinting #Lasercutting #Lasercrafting

I recently tried my hand at doing a parquetry inlay. It was a gift box and I inlaid some painted wood pieces cut from the same 1/8” birch ply I used for the box. Could have gotten the kerf compensation dialed in just a bit better, but happy with how it turned out. #lasercutting #lasercrafting

Ended up making a custom shoe type holder for the brushes. Complete with a reminder to put the brush back when done. 😁 Sound on for the satisfying sound. 🗡️

During the my local makerspace Thursday night hang out I finally got around to engraving the 2 Harbor Freight bench brushes I had bought a while back. I had sanded the brushes previously and finished them with some boiled linseed oil. Got to use the Lightburn camera I had set up last weekend on the laser machine. Used a cardboard lasercut holding jig.

I decided to get a set of plastic putty knives to serve as laser masking lay down scrapers for myself. I then had to design a laser crafted holder. 😁

Ok, finally wrapping this project up. Cut the frame down, glued and used some flat angle braces to reassemble. Painted both the frame and the back of the mirror. Hung it in the laser room at the maker space. Looks good. 😃#Lasercrafting #MakerSpace

And finally, I had to to a little job to check the maintenance operation (laser alignment) had good results, so I used a wood leftover to engrave something nice. I went for "Framasoft campaign 0 Main menu" par @davidrevoy , @Framasoft − CC-BY 4.0 (this image was designed for Framasoft's 2017 campaign "Contributopia", I really like it !)

A bit of laser cutting and engraving today, for a few projects...
First, I did a business card dispenser (I had one already but it was not sturdy enough without gluing it, and I prefer to avoid glue).

Since I engraved the back I will be painting the back to match the frame. So the engraving will show up dark. Test painting shown on the cut off piece. #MakerSpace #LaserEngraving #LaserCrafting

End up cutting off the bottom. Then engraved the bottom the right way. Now I just need to cut the frame down. Still a relatively large mirror at ~ 22” x 23”. #MakerSpace #LaserEngraving #LaserCrafting

Since this is being engraved from the back I had mirrored the engraving so it faces the right way when viewed from the front. Top went fine. Very happy. Rotated the mirror to do the bottom and did a vertical mirror of an already horizontal mirrored engraving which turned out to be a mistake since physically rotating the mirror canceled out the horizontal mirroring. Should have just rotated the horizontal mirror image instead of doing the vertical mirroring. 😭 #LaserEngraving #LaserCrafting #MakerSpace

Finding and marking the middles allowed me to set the Job Origin to Center in Lightburn and then position the laser head over the intersection of the lines on the back of the mirror. Then started the engraving. Since the job origin is set to center Lightburn engraves everything relative to that point. #LaserEngraving #LaserCrafting #MakerSpace

I used the horizontal lines to set the mirror edge parallel to the x-axis by running the laser head and laser pointer down the marked line and adjusting the mirror until the laser pointer stayed on the line from one side to the other. #LaserEngraving #LaserCrafting #MakerSpace

I had to use the pass through slot opening on the machine to fit the short side of the mirror into the bed area. #LaserEngraving #LaserCrafting #MakerSpace

In today’s adventures in Laser Crafting I found a largish mirror curb side on the morning walk. It’s about 22”x28”, so too big for my 50W laser. But guess who now has access to a larger bed 60W laser machine through their local maker space. 😁 #laserengraving #lasercrafting #makerspace

Turns out, with the clamping plate, I was able to get the number of needed large clamps down to 9. This is much more manageable number. Worked out great. 🥳​

Decided I needed to make an inverted or negative clamping plate (not sure of the technical term here) to distribute the clamping force to the needed areas while using minimal clamps.
So the plate needed a strong back plate and raised areas that correspond to the surfaces that needed clamping. Thought about 3d printing, but decided that would take too long for the number I needed. So laser cutting it is.

Laser cut the back plate from some 1/4" plywood and the raised clamping areas from 32 pt chip board.

Used the cut out chip board as a positioning jig clamped to the ply back plate. Glued the cut out areas to the ply with some spray glue.

Thought this might be a one off or an occasional make. Turns out I was wrong, by a lot. 😬​🙃​😅​
To make a lot of these plaques I quickly identified my bottle neck was going to be my supply of large spring clamps. Normally the typical plaques I make take 7 of the large clamps. These Cub Scout plaques take 15. 😦​

So the amount of clamps I needed was going to be a non trivial investment of cash and storage space for said clamps.

I decided to work smarter, as they say. 😃​

Here is the finally product. A custom client request for a Cub Scout plaque. It's for an out going pack leader.

This is what the client told me about the occasion for the plaque:

"Our current AOL leader is leaving the pack after serving as every role within the pack (chair positions as well as den leader for two dens) over the last decade."

Making another enclosure for another light switch. Modeled in Blender, and exported with Flatterer to SVG.

The light switch itself consists of an ATmega328pb microcontroller, an nRF24L01 transceiver, and two pushbuttons. And a few LEDs, of course. You always need LEDs.

Used my palm sander and some 60, 150 and 220 grit sandpaper. To sand off the engravings. One of the large plaques had a vector engraved sea turtle which was the hardest to sand off since the vector engraving was deeper. #

On the morning walk I came across this chest on the curb. It’s cedar lined and not really anything I’m interested in for a project. But inside were some black walnut plaques that were clearly laser engraved. Probably a low watt diode laser.

I think I can sand off the engravings and do my own engravings on them.

Ok, that’s better. This is with the led chip mounted and powered on. The light is actually much more diffuse to the naked eye. Hard to get a good picture of the full board due to all the reflections in the shinny black acrylic. Just have to get it installed and wired up. #LaserCutting #LaserCrafting #LEDs

When you make changes to a laser job layout but forget to turn on and check the layer that shows the physical outlines of the objects that are outside the cut lines. 🤦‍♂️ Sigh.

ADHD Brain: Ooh, it would be cool if we could make the makerspace Logo glow.

Me: No, we already have a plan to just do a paint infill on the black engrave acrylic.

ADHD Brain: Look, we can just can just invert engrave a piece of translucent red acrylic, infill with black paint, do kerf compensated cuts from the red and black acrylic, inlay the red logo into the black sheet and back light with some LEDs.

Me: No, just stick to the plan.

ADHD Brain: Ok
