The #resin pour ended up with some bubbles, so, I ended up not filming as much of the process as I wanted to, because as soon as things go a bit wrong and I have to go into trouble-shooting mode, I always forget to record (especially under a time crunch) - ha! - but I plan on making another video later showing the glue-up process and the routing of the edges etc,...

Yesterday I was working on a tree of life design on the CO2 #laser. It's a hand-drawn line-drawing with lots of intricate detail that we're planning to make a divination board of.

This is a relatively large board, so the #engraving takes a while, so I tend to let it do it's thing while I'm in the room working on other stuff.

Then, I happen to look at it and notice it's all screwy - the lines are showing up double. Oh Nooooo...

The rest of my day was basically consumed with debugging the laser.

Ghosting or double-lines usually mean something screwy in the optical path, specifically in terms of the verticality of the laser. If the beam isn't hiting the focus lens in the center, you can end up with this problem, or if the beam is hitting the edge of the nozzle and is being reflected, you can also have this issue.

I did the 'ol mirror alignment test with the tape... nope,... everything looks dead center.

I did notice some debris in the nozzle so i cleaned that out thoroughly, it's never been cleaner - issue still persists.

Then I grabbed a mirror and a light, and pointed the light at the hole where the beam normally enters the head, and angled the mirror below the nozzle such that I could see the entire optical path - looks completely perfectly clear ... well darn...

I had to somehow rule out optical versus mechanical issues, so what I came up with was #laserengraving two crosses, one just made up of single lines, the other of filled lines. If both have double lines, the issue is likely optical. If only the filled cross has double lines, the issue is just mechanical.

Sure enough, the thin line cross came out just fine, so the issue isn't optical.

This also revealed clearly the problem only happens on the X axis.

So I proceed to clean the heck out of the x axis belt, it was fine... didn't help... tension was fine too..

Then I looked for 'wiggle' in the laser nozzle... now.. it always had some wiggle in it, so I didn't think too much of it, but it seemed worse somehow... wondered if that could be it...

I had to track down where the wiggle even came from. It's not the laser head itself, just the nozzle part.

After lots of back-breaking awkward bending and looking around with lights and mirrors, I discovered that this #monport onyx R laser has two little screws hidden BEHIND where the belt attaches, that fix the laser nozzle assembly to the rest of the larger laser head.

They are impossible to tighten without removing the belt first... ughhh....

Lots of fiddly screwing around later, I was able to tighten these little screws, and sure enough, no more wobble. It's more solid now than it ever was even since first we got the laser.

And sure enough, that fixed the problem.

Not optics, not verticality,... just two little stupid screws.

I'm guessing they were never fully tightened when it left the factory (hence the, it always had some wobble to it...) and just became increasingly loose until loose enough to become a problem. When I initially found the screws, one of them was just short of completely falling out. Go figure.

We made some last-minute incense burners for the Urbana winter market this weekend. Here's a little video of how they turned out, along with some photos and video of the market! :)

These were designed in #inkscape from scratch, then engraved on basswood, in 2 layers glued together, we then routed the edges, and sanded the pieces before staining. The orange one was engraved on basswood that was first spray painted orange, and then masked with masking tape, the engraving was subsequently filled in with black acrylic paint. It bled a bit through the tape unfortunately, but it kind of works, giving it a bit of a distressed look.

Какие лазеры подходят

Лучше всего работают:

CO₂-лазер (10.6 µm) — стандарт для пластика

Диодный лазер — возможно, но хуже контраст

Волоконный (fiber) — почти не работает по чистому ABS

Типичная мощность:

30–60 W CO₂ для промышленной маркировки

10–20 W для мелких изделий

Визуальный результат

Зависит от состава пластика.

Возможные эффекты:

светло-серый на чёрном ABS

тёмный на светлом ABS

вспененный белый след

лёгкое углубление

Лучший контраст дают:

лазерный ABS (laserable ABS)

ABS с добавками для маркировки

Параметры (ориентировочно)

CO₂-лазер:

скорость: 300–800 мм/с

мощность: 10–40%

DPI: 300–600

один проход

Точные значения подбираются тестом.

Проблемы

Запах и испарения
ABS выделяет стирол → нужна вытяжка.

Оплавление краёв
Слишком высокая мощность даёт глянец и подтеки.

Низкий контраст
Дешёвый ABS иногда почти не меняет цвет.

Как делают брендинг лучше

Практические методы:

использовать двухслойный ABS (engraving plastic)

делать заливку краской после гравировки

применять лазерные добавки / masterbatch

использовать текстурную маркировку

Где это применяют

корпуса электроники

клавиатуры

промышленные панели

шильдики

инструменты

Когда лучше не лазер

Иногда лучше:

тампопечать

УФ-печать

литьё с логотипом

наклейка из поликарбоната

Если нужно, могу дать:

точные настройки для конкретного станка,

как добиться белого контраста на чёрном ABS,

или как делают брендирование на заводах электроники.

Here's a few items we made for our booth at the event that we haven't listed online yet. :)

The witch lady is just a simple wood cutout colored with felt markers.

We have a few ornaments we made as well, that I didn't take pictures of yet, where we used paint instead.

Using markers is definitively significantly easier for coloring more intricate designs like this. And you can still finish it with clear polycrylic.

The "Yule Blessings" deer/tree thing has following layers:

* One wood backing plate with on it, glued a white sheet of paper, also laser-cut in the shape of the tree, to provide better light reflection/contrast.
* One sheet of green transparent acrylic cut out in the shape of the xmas tree.
* One sheet of clear acrylic cut out in the shape of the xmas tree. This one acts as the light guide, and goes all the way down into the light base, where it sits on the LEDs.
* One thicker wooden frame (Mostly there to hide my blotches of glue :P )
* one thinner wooden frame (Because I initially cut out a thin frame, then realized i had blotches of glue to hide, and made a thicker frame, but I figured I'd put the earlier cut-out thin frame on top of it, to give it a 3d effect, and it came out kinda nicer that way anyway)
* The edges are covered with a strip of cut-out black cardstock folded to fit over the entire thing and glued to the sides.

The light base itself is just a block of wood with led lights in it, you can buy them pre-made. Stuck it in the laser and engraved it.

In hindsight, I probably didn't need the green acrylic in there, as it barely contributes color.

Wooden coasters with their base. They are laser engraved and cut and varnished for greater durability. They can be used as 3 separate coasters or as 1 large coaster when they are all on their base. The cells at the base are filled with epoxy resin.

Kind of found this out by accident:

It kind of makes sense, as cardstock tends to have a colored coating rather than being the same color all the way through, but it never occurred to me to try this: As it turns out, some fun effects can be had when laser-engraving paper and cardstock :)

We have a bunch more I have to edit the pictures yet. Some turned out pretty neat. Combinations of lasercut cardstock and lasercut scrapbook paper - sometimes cutting instead of engraving and combining the two - so for instance, cutting the symbol into the cardstock and then putting over top of a scrapbook paper circle, letting the paper pattern come through, or the inverse of that - or just straight up engraving the pattern onto either the paper or the cardstock ; the cardstock turns white when engraved with the white settings - the paper turns brown-ish.

Minimum power, medium speed - you can get wild intricate detail into it too.

I just finished up the planchette for our Spirit board.

Metaphysically speaking, the design is kind of interesting - it depicts a qabalistic tree of life, with within each of the sefirot a flower of life sacred geometry pattern. The glass lens fits right in the spot where DA'AT would be positioned.

The backside has an upright triangle, a protection symbol / spirit-filter :)

Unlike most boards though, the pointy end of the planchette is meant to point towards the user, so hopefully nobody uses this thing upside down ;) -It's meant to serve as an invocation tool as well as a divination tool.

Mechanically, there's 3 layers of basswood here holding in the lens.
The bottom layer with the triangle on it, has, on the inner side, a pocket engraved out for the lens to sit in. The next (middle/inner) layer has a complete circle cutout to fit the lens snugly, the top layer with the tree-of-life depicted on it has a smaller circle laser-cut out. The whole thing is glued together with 3 types of glue, then the edges routed with a small router bit, sanded, and stained.

We found some used scrapbook paper scraps at the local thrift store that looked like they'd be a perfect fit for Serena Lafond's "Musicians" original artwork, so we made a framed version with the art engraved on painted wood backed by the paper we found; it came out pretty well!
