  1. The state budget will take over financing of the first Łódź cross-city tunnel as the delays have grown too high to finish by the Feniks program deadline of 2029. EU funds earmarked for the project will be redirected to other investments related to suburban rail: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/m

  2. A few more quick ones…
PKP PLK proposes a radical overhaul of replacement bus funding in the 2027/8 network rules. Instead of refunding operator costs of replacement transport caused by track work, PLK would pay a fixed sum for every train-km subject to replacement, and only when the cause is solely due to an unplanned line closure or extension of a planned closure.

This has attracted much criticism from train operators, who rightly note that bus transport cannot be equated to rail, with route lengths and costs varying widely.
They also note that the 'solely' in the condition for the compensation is doing a lot of work and could easily be used to deny payments if line closures combine with sudden rolling stock failures or other factors: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/n

  3. Last, but not least, 185 traction vehicles were newly equipped with ETCS, driven primarily by new locomotive purchases of PKP Intercity

  4. Capacity exhaustion is also hitting - according to PKP PLK, the length of lines with no free capacity whatsoever has more than doubled, with lines such as the local tracks of the Warsaw crosstown tunnel, the Aleje Jerozolimskie-Służewiec section of the Chopin airport/Piaseczno/Radom line, most of the Kościerzyna/Kartuzy-Gdańsk Rębiechowo route, and local lines Bydogszcz-Unisław, Jabłonowo Pomorskie-Brodnica and Rydułtowy-Sumina being added to the list in 2025.

In the peaks, the infamously congested western throat of Wrocław Głowny was taken off the lists, but new and exciting chokepoints like Płock-Sierpc, Augustów-Suwałki or Wałcz-…pretty sure they meant Kalisz Pomorski landed instead

  5. On the freight side the drop-off of the historically dominant fossil fuels has slowed down to the point that the share of raw coal/oil/gas (but really, it's almost all coal) in the transported mass has actually gone up a bit. The fastest-growing segment is the rebounding wood and pulp one, followed by "nonmetal substances", largely building materials like cement. Mail and parcels are down 99% while "moving and other non-trade goods" are up infinity%, whatever that means

  6. Poland's growth in rail passenger-km of 7.75% was third in Europe, behind Portugal (with a whopping 25.55%!) and Ireland (13.07%), and just ahead of Switzerland (7.5%). Growth percentage in passenger numbers alone had Poland in seventh, with the leaders being Slovenia and Hungary.

    #kolej #rail #UTKStats2025

  7. Punctuality went down from 91.64% to 91.44% (where a train is considered punctual up to 6 minutes delay - a further 16.95% finished their routes delayed less than 6 minutes). There was an improvement in the summer months, but this was more than offset by the following autumn months.

2181 trains arrived at their terminus delayed over 2 hours. 18913 trains were cancelled, of which 48.6% were the infamous Polregio and 13.5% KD.

The most common delay reasons by occurrence were:
    - Passenger movements (14.59% of cases)
    - Rolling ststock failure (11.24%)
    - Extended travel time (7.23%)

The hardest-hitting delay reasons by minutes inflicted were:
    - Rolling stock failure (16.94% of delay minutes, over 840 thousand in absolute numbers)
    - Delays abroad (7.45%)
    - Accidents incl. suicides (5.25%)

WKD remains the most-punctual regular operator at 99.48% (down from 99.61%), with ČD rising to second and bumping SKMT and ŁKA down a spot. PKPIC remained went down from 76.71% to 76.33%

    #kolej #rail #UTKStats2025

  8. International train ridership increased relative to 2024 by ~18% to 11.6 mln. PKPIC accounts for 88.4% of that ridership, followed by UBB with 5.3% (yes, Usedom accounts for five percent of Poland's international rail passengers!), Polregio (much of which is really DB Regio) with 2.12%, RegioJet with 2.1%, KD with 1.34% and Leo Express with 0.35% (bound to increase this year!)

    #kolej #rail #UTKStats2025 #CrossBorderRail

  9. Financial return across all passenger rail operations increased from 0.4 mln PLN to 0.7 mln PLN, while the share of state and region subsidies in the income of train operators increased by just 0.62 pp to 58.12%.

  10. So, UTK's railway stats for 2025 were released last week. Unsurprisingly passengers are up, freight is down, but intermodal is also up.

Probably most interesting thing so far is that Wrocław Główny has been dethroned in the busiest station ranking - it's now third behind Kraków Główny and Poznań Główny, each of which rose by millions while Wrocław fell a bit, the former becoming the fist station to hit over 30 mln passengers getting on and off since UTK data collection began.

Passenger traffic is up almost everywhere, although one notable exception is the Silesian Voivodeship (the effect of the ongoing Katowice rebuild, I'm pretty sure). PKP Intercity gained another almost 11 million passengers and has now beaten Polregio's 2022 numbers and passed 20% market share. If things continue like this, PKPIC will take the highest ridership crown for 2026 or 2027. Other operators gaining market share are KD, SKM Warsaw (recovering from a dip), WKD (likewise but not fully recovered yet) and KMŁ.

  11. PKP PLK is threatening to sue the leader of the Locomotive Drivers' Trade Union who refused to retract comments in which he stated multiple recent derailments occurred due to PLK not reacting to findings from regular track inspections properly and having trains run at full speed where conditions call for a restriction: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/z

  12. Newsdrop, "Jon Worth just crossed half of Poland by regional rail" edition:

PKP Intercity has moved up the extension of IC Gryf (currently Szczecin-Olsztyn) to Białystok via Pisz from December to September this year. This will mark the return of IC trains to the southern Masuria-crossing line after a brief absence due to the primary northern route through Korsze and Giżycko reopening: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/p

To daje jakieś 260 dni w roku.

  15. If this news does make you wonder if there might not be something interesting to catch on a short trip into Poland, the two prototype FPS Plus hybrid multiple units used by Lubusz Voivodeship are back from repairs. Try to catch them while they're hot, I guess? rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/o

  16. Okay, here's maybe less news and more an example of terrible coverage of #CrossBorderRail - trains between Berlin and Kostrzyn have returned on Saturday 11 July, Rynek Kolejowy publishes a piece announcing it three weeks later, and cites Polregio (responsible operator on the Polish side) as saying they're running to Ostkreuz whereas they're STILL terminating in Lichtenberg, according to German info.
On which point, it's been OVER HALF A FRIGGING YEAR and the Germans apparently still haven't told their Polish counterparts that the extension to Ostkreuz isn't happening yet. What the hell?: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/w

  17. On to Lower Silesia… After the central government struck revitalization of the line to Bogatynia from the Kolej Plus program, the voivodeship has been considering taking over the line and doing it on its own. Unlike other lines the Lower Silesian Rail and Road Service has brought back before, this one has an extra complication - it has traffic, traffic that cannot be suspended because it serves the all-important Turów lignite mine and power plant complex (ugh, yes, the very one we picked a dumb fight with Czechs over as if the environmental problems weren't terrible on their own): rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/r

  18. Speaking of Warmia-Masuria… The voivodeship doesn't see itself as being particularly in the wrong regarding its shoddy tender… but they've delayed the proposed starting date to the yearly timetable change in December 2027. It's a start: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/w

  19. ŁKA, the Łódź Voivodeship's own train operator, was meaning to officially launch its new Pesa Elf III EMUs on the 3rd of August… and then they made a surprise "railfan alert" announcement that one was going to run a midday shift earlier. The surprise debut went poorly, with the unit being withdrawn early due to a toilet failure, it seems: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/w

  20. The PKP Cargo wagons @partim saw in the Poprad river (social.tchncs.de/@partim/11698) have been fished out a couple days ago, after spending almost two weeks in the waters. Not the best holiday, I imagine: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/w

  21. Koleje Małopolskie (Lesser Poland Railways) are expanding their area of responsibility for the first time in years - the voivodeship is going to have them take over Polregio's cross-voivodeship routes from Kraków to Katowice and Czechowice-Dziedzice. All this within the scope of the existing contract.

Another vote of non-confidence in the embattled all-Polish regio operator: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/k

  22. Leo Express's weird new Przemyśl-Frankfurt (Main) train is finally running its full route after it got the open access approval to run in Poland literally on the day it started running from Bohumín (or was it the day after? I forgot) since yesterday. They also let you reserve couchette berths now (as @nordkommission wrote here: zug.network/@nordkommission/11 the other day): rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/l

  23. Now, today's big news for travelers to and around the Upper Silesia-Zagłębie metropolitan area (that's the huge blob of mining and industrial cities around Katowice) - starting today, PKP Intercity tickets between a station in the GZM area and one outside of it include 120 minutes before departure or after arrival (in case of delay, have the conductor endorse your ticket) of tram/bus/trolleybus rides on all ZTM lines at no extra charge!

Additionally, holders of ZTM season tickets are now entitled to travel on all PKPIC trains, including the commercial EIC and EIP categories, within their ticket's validity area, without having to get a seat reservation, even on trains that otherwise require one.
A free reservation still has to be obtained before the journey to take a bike, otherwise a 20 PLN fee is charged on board. As conductors are not equipped with local smart card readers, people using one are required to carry a paper confirmation of ticket purchase. (This part is unlikely to be relevant to most people reading this, but do use this as proof such integration can be done after all!)

  24. Eh, it's been a while, a bunch of things feels shitty, I should get some writing exercise, how about a newsdump for a distraction? Let's start with something a bit older…

Remember how the fees for keeping trains stopped on PLK tracks were going to skyrocket? (as mentioned in the Warmia-Masuria tender thread here: mastodon.com.pl/@HaTetsu/11672)
Well, PKP PLK walked that back after protests from train operators (who, among others, argued that they don't always even have control over which track their train gets told to stay on, so why should they have to pay for PLK staff decisions). It's apparently considered maybe reasonable to have higher fees for taking up main tracks, but not so much higher: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/o

  28. So, after a bit of microblogging properly, more Polentakt hype (in spite of all the more-or-less existential awfulness in the world). In the north, we've already mentioned the U08 change (see previous post) and a bit on the U30 (see post no. 9). Regarding the latter, the P07, the slower Tricity-Bydgoszcz-Poznań-Wrocław connection was previously routed via Gdańsk Port Lotniczy, Kartuzy, Kościerzyna and Czersk, bringing long-distance traffic with actual calling stations to the Pomeranian part of the Coal Trunk Line for the first time in many years. It is now being replaced by the now U30 on that segment, and directed again along the present route via Tczew and Laskowice. Running bihourly trains through the exapnse of forest has probably always been a pipe dream, and as I wrote before, even 4x4h may not happen in 9 years. The added stops in Olpuch and Karsin raise some hope of the new connection doing something to bring new holiday-makers to the locally-renowned Wdzydze area. The Kościerzyna-Czersk section is planned to have no regional service outside of a couple of peak trains, so this would be their lifeline.
Also interesting in Pomerania is the proposed service concept for the to-be-restored Kościerzyna/Lipusz-Bytów-Korzybie line - bihourly trains Kościerzyna-Korzybie-Słupsk, along with 2 pairs Chojnice-Bytów-Korzybie-Słupsk and… a 4h express line Malbork-Tczew-Gdańsk Gł.-Gdańsk Wrzeszcz-Gdańsk Strzyża-Gdańsk Port Lotniczy-Żukowo-Kościerzyna (direct bypassing Kartuzy)-Łubiana and then all-stops to Miastko - an east-west rally probably unknown before… and, sadly, unlikely to be competitive with buses for connecting Miastko and Bytów - it's a long detour compared to the road.
