  1. OK, let's get the other #CrossRegionRail stuff out of the way.

On the Pomerania/Kuyavia-Pomerania border, the handover of Polregio's EMU services to SKMT means direct regional trains between Bydgoszcz and the Tricity are coming to an end - changes in Laskowice Pomorskie will be required from #RailwayNewYear, but the voivodeships promise the trains will wait for each other. This is honestly better than I expected - my bet was that the relation would be divided in Smętowo, much closer to the border, but also worse connected. Except for those people who live in and around Warlubie and need to get to their voivodeship capital, it's going to be worse for them, especially since it doesn't sound like there will be any more trains than there already were. It also raises a ticketing question - will the Pomeranian Tariff be extended to Laskowice? Is SKMT going to bring back a carrier tariff just for this route? That there will be no passenger rights across the journey I am, sadly, fairly certain: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/k

Meanwhile on the other side of the country, Koleje Śląskie will be introducing a couple through pairs Racibórz-Rybnik-Katowice-Kraków: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/k

  2. Pomerania keeps bringing good news - not only has work on the Lipusz-Bytów line has started, the voivodeship and PKP PLK have confirmed that the line to Nowy Dwór Gdański should also be restored next year: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/p
As the local government boasts, this will make the Pomeranian Voivodeship the very first to achieve passenger rail service to all county/district capitals since Poland's rail revival began.

And on the Coal Trunk Line, PKP PLK did what they said they'd do and signed the last contract for modernization with electrification - for the middle-of-nowhere Lipowa Tucholska-Kościerzyna section. As a reminder, the idea for this is mostly as an alternate freight corridor that will significantly improve the situation for the Port of Gdynia, what with the Tricity not having a freight bypass and the Tczew-Gdańsk section being busy enough even if there was one. Additionally, a few intercity trains are also to run through there, providing an alternate north-south connection for smaller towns: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/o

To dobry weekend, by połączyć spacer nad morzem z lokalną kulturą.

  4. Also in Pomerania, PKP PLK is hoping to have all contracts for the modernization and electrification of the northern part of the old Coal Trunk Line, Gdynia-Kościerzyna-Maksymilianowo(-Bydgoszcz), signed by mid-September. Unfortunately, the Gdynia Główna-Gdańsk Osowa suburban section will have to wait for electric trains until possibly as late as 2032, more than fifteen years after the PKM line (Gdańsk Wrzeszcz-Gdańsk Port Lotniczy-Gdańsk Osowa/Rębiechowo) opened and brought the promise of commuter rail to the Tricity's western districts: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/p

In better news, it looks like EMUs will reach Gdańsk Osowa as early as September, and the current Gdańsk Wrzeszcz-Gdańsk Port Lotniczy-Gdynia Główna services will be split there to offer as much capacity as possible on the wired up (years ago!) voivodeship-managed line (before, only bi-mode units and a couple specially-added out-of-Takt trains from towns south of Gdańsk terminating at the airport could use the OLE). After that, Kartuzy and Somonino should get weekend services back. Commuters are surely seeing the light at the end of the tunnel: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/p

  5. The reconstruction of the Wejherowo-Choczewo line, meant to serve what is to become Poland's first nuclear power plant… just like the previous incarnation in its twilight days, will require a budget increase. Not super-huge, only to the tune of less than a hundred million (sorry) PLN, but still: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/w

    #kolej #rail #Pomorskie

  6. The City of Bytów administration hasn't managed to return passenger trains to the Pomeranian window-making town on its own, but as they prepare to return the line to PKP PLK for revitalization, they argue they can be proud to have saved it from dismantlers, and even kept a little freight going: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/u

  7. So, after a bit of microblogging properly, more Polentakt hype (in spite of all the more-or-less existential awfulness in the world). In the north, we've already mentioned the U08 change (see previous post) and a bit on the U30 (see post no. 9). Regarding the latter, the P07, the slower Tricity-Bydgoszcz-Poznań-Wrocław connection was previously routed via Gdańsk Port Lotniczy, Kartuzy, Kościerzyna and Czersk, bringing long-distance traffic with actual calling stations to the Pomeranian part of the Coal Trunk Line for the first time in many years. It is now being replaced by the now U30 on that segment, and directed again along the present route via Tczew and Laskowice. Running bihourly trains through the exapnse of forest has probably always been a pipe dream, and as I wrote before, even 4x4h may not happen in 9 years. The added stops in Olpuch and Karsin raise some hope of the new connection doing something to bring new holiday-makers to the locally-renowned Wdzydze area. The Kościerzyna-Czersk section is planned to have no regional service outside of a couple of peak trains, so this would be their lifeline.
Also interesting in Pomerania is the proposed service concept for the to-be-restored Kościerzyna/Lipusz-Bytów-Korzybie line - bihourly trains Kościerzyna-Korzybie-Słupsk, along with 2 pairs Chojnice-Bytów-Korzybie-Słupsk and… a 4h express line Malbork-Tczew-Gdańsk Gł.-Gdańsk Wrzeszcz-Gdańsk Strzyża-Gdańsk Port Lotniczy-Żukowo-Kościerzyna (direct bypassing Kartuzy)-Łubiana and then all-stops to Miastko - an east-west rally probably unknown before… and, sadly, unlikely to be competitive with buses for connecting Miastko and Bytów - it's a long detour compared to the road.

  8. PKP PLK signed a contract for the construction of a fourth track between Pszczółki and Pruszcz Gdański on the main line to Gdańsk. The section was tripled before but the demands of serving two major ports, a growing agglomeration and increasing amounts of summer traffic necessitated this investment: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/p

  9. In better railway news - Work on rebuilding the Kartuzy-Lębork line in Pomerania has now begun with the dismantling of the existing remains: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/k

    #Pomorskie #kolej #rail

  10. A *very* eyebrow-raising detail I haven't actually seen anyone mention is that they apparently want to rebuild the Człuchów-Wierzchowo Człuchowskie connection that the Germans built along the interwar border to give the town good access to trains on the Ostbahn and disappeared when it went back away, and divert long-distance trains through there. Makes no sense at all to me - run a good Regio service!

  11. @NymeHess Huh, looked into the timetable and it looks like they actually managed to get all those Gdańsk Wrzeszcz-Stara Piła-Kartuzy-Somonino trains exactly aligned to the minute every hour, where my notes suggest that it was still messed up a little back in January. They will run shortened to Żukowo Zachodnie on weekends, still perfectly aligned but with sliiiightly different minutes at that station

    #kolej #rail #pkp #polregio #pomorskie

  12. They have also published a notice of intent to tender new routes on lines to be reactivated/upgraded:
    - Gdańsk-Kartuzy-Sierakowice-Lębork
    - Gdynia-Lębork-Łeba (electric)
    - Kościerzyna-Lipusz-Bytów-Korzybie-Słupsk (no direct trains Tricity-Bytów, or even Kościerzyna-Bytów, this sounds like a possible challenge to coordinate… or a chance to build up secondary centers)
    - Nowy Dwór Gdański-Szymankowo-Tczew
    rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/p

Of course, if and when each of these happens will depend on when PKP PLK gets around to rebuilding the lines.

The line to Łeba is currently closed for engineering works and trains there are being replaced with buses this year (normally there's a summer-holiday-only train service): rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/p

  13. In Pomerania railway news - the voivodeship has announced it will use emergency powers to extend existing contracts for the SKM line and diesel Regios while the lots are retendered - final new contracts for the other two will be signed, so SKMT is set to take over EMU regios in December (wonder what will happen to the trains to Bydgoszcz and Olsztyn, by the way): rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/p

  14. Meanwhile the bill meant to enable the government to purchase PKP SA's supermajority share of SKM Tricity with funds earmarked for railway development and hand it over to the Pomeranian Voivodeship has stalled in public comments for no apparent reason. Well, the stated reason is "too many comments to resolve".
Anyway, the voivodeship is exploring other options for taking over the company, up to the risky plan of transferring its new EMUs to SKMT in exchange for new shares being created from the increased capital to dilute PKP SA into a minority stake against the voivodeship and communes: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/u

At the same time, the voivodeship has had to cancel the two lots with sole overpriced offers (for the SKM line and for Diesel regional lines)… leaving SKMT's apparent Regio EMU takeover gambit half-successful - now the two sides have to figure out how to align on the money amounts, I guess: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/p

    #kolej #rail #SKMT #pomorskie

  15. In Pomerania, the soon-to-be voivodeship railway SKM Trójmiasto has crossed a hurdle towards taking over regional electrified lines - Polregio's appeal against the award has been dismissed, despite SKMT seemingly undervaluing their offer by about the amount they overvalued their offer for the urban trains they already ran (where Polregio doesn't have the resources to compete). This latter lot has yet to be formally awarded despite the seemingly forgone conclusion, perhaps because of the open questions: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/p

  16. PKP PLK has signed a contract for design work on building extra passing loops between Władysławowo and Hel. Only design, because funding for the actual building work has yet to be secured. The project involves building a passing loop in the forests north of Hel, at the Chałupy halt, and also doubling the Władysławowo-Władysławowo Port section along with adding a second platform in Władysławowo: rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/p

    #pkp #plk #kolej #pomorskie #hel

  17. In EMUs, SKMT probably has a clear advantage because a) they already run most of the EMU types Pomerania uses (not EN57AL and not Impuls 1, but there's probably a lot of similarities to others they do) and b) they are already at least stabling some of them, haven't tried tracking down more details but I think odds are they're somewhat familiar with them from the service side, too:

  18. Back in 2015 with the opening of the PKM line (pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linia_ko), SKMT was given the task of operating it using brand-new Pesa DMUs ordered by the voivodeship to go with it (which is also where they introduced the gray with red accents livery they use everywhere now and looks freaking ugly everywhere else imo) and, well, it turned out the company was unprepared for the task of servicing Diesel stock and quickly started subcontracting an increasing number of trains to Polregio until in 2018 the voivodeship decided to oficially hand the line to PR and let SKMT focus on its traditional Gdańsk-Wejherowo route.
On reflection, you could perhaps say that the Chojnice DMU works is kind of the crown jewel of Pomeranian Polregio right now, guaranteeing their position for the time being as anyone trying to serve the interior of the voivodeship would need to build an equivalent maintenance base on their own.

  19. To expand on the context a bit, there was no real competition for SKM services as those are still heavily reliant on SKMT's remodeled (and infamously non-air-conditioned) EN57AKM and EN71 units, leading to voivodeship-provided Impuls (and two refurbished EN57/71) units only making up 52% of the rolling stock needs.
Similarly, in the most-of-voivodeship DMU order, only two thirds of the stock was voivodeship-provided and SKMT has been burnt before regarding Diesel service and clearly recognizes the need to leverage their strengths if they are to successfully expand into a voivodeship railway

  20. In headline-ish form for the international audience: Pomeranian Voivodeship reveals offers in tender for 2027~2030 timetable years, SKMT unexpectedly bids and outbids Polregio for regional EMU lines by >150 mln PLN (~27% cheaper), Polregio prevails against challenge from Arriva on Malbork-Grudziądz, no competition for SKM and DMU services

W częściach SKM i Regio SZT obecni przewoźnicy nie mieli konkurencji, natomiast w części Malbork-Grudziądz Arriva przegrywa z Polregio prawie 14 mln zł.
