25. April 2026: Nationaler DNA-Tag

@lednaBM What did Watson do to get the Nobel Prize?
** HE STOLE ROSALIND FRANKLIN'S NOTES **

This is extraordinary.
Sharon Begley, STAT’s senior science writer, died in 2021. But before she did, she wrote this clear-eyed, fair, and utterly damning obituary for DNA pioneer turned pariah James Watson, who died on Thursday, aged 97.

I am a biologist in my other life. I read The Double Helix by Watson while still in school. I've always been a geek. I remember well when his quotes about black people were published in the newspaper while I was still a student at uni. At the time, I couldn't believable that a famous scientist could voice such unreflected, unscientific rubbish. It can't be mentioned enough. And also that views like his are not as rare in science as one might wish.

On the death of James Watson
So James Watson, a deeply unsavoury individual who co-won a Nobel Prize by stealing Rosalind Franklin’s ground breaking research on DNA, and was an unrepentant racist and misogynist, is dead. Lest it be forgotten, here is a collection of authentic quotes that give an insight into his true character.

"A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.
Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."
Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating."

James Watson — the Nobel laureate co-credited with the discovery of DNA's double-helix structure, but whose reputation was tainted by his repeated racist remarks — has died aged 97. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/11/08/world/science-health/james-watson-dna-pioneer/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #worldnews #sciencehealth #jameswatson #genetics

American scientist #JamesWatson was a racist misogynist who who got a #NobelPrize for stealing Rosalind Franklin's notes.
Watson died yesterday, and his #obituaries are everywhere. So here's a simple way to test each #obit:
How far down do you have to read to learn that Watson was 1) #Racist, 2) #Misogynist, and 3) a #plagiarist of #RosalindFranklin's work?
The further these core facts are from the top, the more slavishly the obituarist is trying to sustain the myth of Watson's "greatness".

#JamesWatson is dead
He did not acknowledge #RosalindFranklin's role in the discovery of the #doubleHelix structure of #DNA, and he was a viciously racist, misogynistic, antisemitic, and homophobic asshole
Bye, shitbag

LOL #JamesWatson basically once told me I was too fat to be a scientist

🎶 James Watson is dead, I shot him in the head 🎶

RIP #JamesWatson (1928-2025)
Gossip has it when Francis Crick and James Watson were collaborating, Crick was doing the hard thinking while Watson was playing with lego, and so the double helix came to be.
Anyway, I hope history will remember James Watson as the phenomenal bigot, racist, misogynist - you name it - he really was.

On the day James Watson died: say her name, Rosalind Franklin. She was instrumental in the discovery of the structure of the double helix #DNA, a feat for which Watson, Crick and Wilkins got the Nobel Prize.

Tragic, scientist James Watson, co-discoverer of the structure of DNA, has aged 97
Probably one of the biggest discoveries ever in science. A key to so much of life. Thanks!

RIP James Watson
Horizon, Life Story: A Horizon Special:
If you're in the UK iPlayer has the film "Life Story""Film telling the story of the race to discover the structure of DNA. Watson and Crick have the bright ideas and the will to win. But there's one little problem: Rosalind Franklin has the crucial data."

@gutenberg_org It should be noted that the mistakes in the structure of #DNA made by #LinusPauling were partially due to him only looking at sketches of the X-ray diffraction data collected by #RosalindFranklin (drawn by his nephew who was working with #JamesWatson and #FrancisCrick ).
#Pauling could not travel from #CalTech to #England because his passport had been revoked by the #US #StateDepartment for his #AntiNuclear (atmospheric testing) protests. CalTech also fired him!
