  1. June 20, 1960 - Nobel Prize-winner in Chemistry Linus Pauling [for study of the nature of the chemical bond and the determination of the structure of molecules and crystals] defied the U.S. Congress by refusing to name circulators of petitions calling for the total halt of nuclear weapons testing. Pauling later won a second Nobel, a Peace Prize, for his work championing nuclear disarmament.

  3. @gutenberg_org It should be noted that the mistakes in the structure of #DNA made by #LinusPauling were partially due to him only looking at sketches of the X-ray diffraction data collected by #RosalindFranklin (drawn by his nephew who was working with #JamesWatson and #FrancisCrick ).

#Pauling could not travel from #CalTech to #England because his passport had been revoked by the #US #StateDepartment for his #AntiNuclear (atmospheric testing) protests. CalTech also fired him!

#LinusPauling also won a #NobelPrize for Peace ☮️ in 1962 for his campaign against testing of nuclear weapons leading to radioactive ☢️ fallout and its worldwide consequences.

He was equally reviled by the Pentagon and the Kremlin, and might’ve won a 3rd #NobelPrize for solving the structure of #DNA 🧬 before Watson & Crick (who used his method) if not for his passport being withdrawn by the U.S. #StateDepartment.😡 👉 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linus_
