Pausanias
Reconstructie van Feidias’ Athena Parthenos (Museumpark Orientalis, Berg en Dal)Als we het hebben over een wereld waarover we onvoldoende informatie hebben, de Oudheid dus, luidt één van de meest overbodige en meest stuitende clichés – en een cliché dat ik helaas zelf ook wel heb gebruikt – dat over deze of gene auteur weinig bekend is, zodat we alle informatie over diens leven moeten afleiden uit diens werk. De Griek Pausanias is ook zo’n schrijver. Misschien kwam hij uit Magnesia-bij-de-Sipylos (in het westen van Turkije), misschien kwam hij daar niet vandaan. Hij was misschien al in de vijftig toen hij begon te schrijven aan het werk dat bekendstaat als Gids voor Griekenland, misschien ook niet. Wellicht was hij tevens arts, wellicht ook niet. Vermoedelijk heette hij Pausanias, maar zelfs dat is niet helemaal zeker.
Erg belangrijk is de auteur vanzelfsprekend niet. Het gaat om wat ’ie te vertellen heeft, en dat is gelukkig heel interessant. Vooral omdat hij ons informeert over een wereld waarover we veel te weinig informatie hebben.
De auteur van de Gids voor Griekenland, die ik toch maar Pausanias zal noemen, beschrijft de monumenten en culten van de Romeinse provincie Achaea in pakweg het derde kwart van de tweede eeuw na Chr. Het was de tijd waarover Gustave Flaubert ooit heeft opgemerkt dat de oude goden zich hadden teruggetrokken en dat de nieuwe, christelijke god er nog niet was. Het was ook – om er nog eens een weerzinwekkend cliché tegenaan te gooien – Romes “gouden eeuw”. De oude tempels stonden er nog, tjokvol kunstwerken, en Pausanias heeft ze gezien en beschreven voor liefhebbers. Zeg maar voor antieke filhellenen.
Nostalgie
De nostalgische liefde voor het voor-Romeinse verleden deelde Pausanias met de concertredenaars van zijn tijd, met de rabbijnen, met de Gallische kunstenaars die oude Keltische vormen herintroduceerden en met de Atheners die zo handig waren om afgelegen tempels te verplaatsen naar toegankelijker plekken. Alles voor het toerisme, zal men hebben gedacht. Er was een markt voor Pausanias’ Gids voor Griekenland, en zijn werk was dan ook niet de enige of eerste reisgids. Hij kon gebruik maken van soortgelijke boeken en had de beschikking over een bibliotheek vol andersoortige literatuur. Zijn gids is daarom niet alleen waardevol voor moderne archeologen, maar ook voor classici, want Pausanias citeert uit de verloren boeken van allerlei verder vergeten auteurs.
Maar vooral: hij heeft gezien wat hij beschrijft. Als moderne lezer verbeeld je je regelmatig dat je de stem hoort van een priester of tempelmedewerker die Pausanias uitlegt geeft over een heiligdom, over een mythe of over een ritueel. Want die zaken hebben zijn belangstelling nog wel het meest: de oude culten. En Pausanias heeft altijd de belangstelling gehad van mensen met diezelfde belangstelling, zoals de religieus-antropoloog (en fantast) James Frazer.
Volksreligie
Geleerden maakten destijds – ik baseer me hier op de Romeinse auteur Marcus Terentius Varro – onderscheid tussen
- de staatscultus;
- de religieuze opvattingen van de filosofen;
- het geloof van de gewone mensen, veelal werkzaam op het platteland.
De staatscultus was voor elke geletterde Griek of Romein iets dat er fatsoenshalve bij hoorde, maar deze bezat weinig diepgang. Je nam eraan deel omdat het zo moest, maar niet uit overtuiging. De filosofische constructen waren voor menigeen te abstract om te inspireren. Het geloof van het platteland echter: dat was oeroud, dat was echt, en dat appelleerde aan de tweede-eeuwse belangstelling voor het verleden. (Dat de volkscultuur niet per se oeroud of echt is en dat er allerlei invented traditions bestaan, is een modern inzicht.)
Kortom
Samenvattend: Pausanias is een auteur die weliswaar zelf nauwelijks bekend is, maar die archeologen, classici en mentaliteitshistorici (om voor het laatst een cliché te gebruiken) een schat aan informatie heeft te bieden. Een mooie website vindt u hier.
Het plaatje hierboven is een moderne reconstructie van het standbeeld van Athena Parthenos, gemaakt door de vijfde-eeuwse beeldhouwer Feidias. We kennen diverse antieke kopieën, maar zouden vermoedelijk nooit hebben geweten dat die geïnspireerd waren door Feidias’ kunstwerk als we niet ook Pausanias’ beschrijving van dit standbeeld hadden gehad.
