  4. #throwbackthursday - 23 1/2 years ago, on April 21, 2001, Don Allingham publicly released #Gramps 0.1.1 for Linux - it is now a much-loved open-source and cross-platform #genealogy program, but it started as an experiment to create a simple #Python program to spot errors in #GEDCOM files and then became "Relativity", a genealogy program for his dad, before becoming Gramps.

    His retrospective from 2006:

  10. Throwback Thursdays - how about a 1980s review of #PAF 1.0 for the DEC Rainbow 100 - this may have been the first and only port of PAF 1.0 for CP/M machines (PAF 2.0 would be officially released for CP/M).

  12. #Genealogy #throwbackthursday - exchanging genealogy data in 1991 was not easy or cheap. The #GEDCOM format was not used by many programs, and you had to have the right-sized floppies (and floppy densities) or use your telephone/BBSes, or simply print everything out.

  13. Tamura Jones has a couple of more deep dives on GEDCOM files out - one covering the compatibility issues between GEDCOM versions, the other getting into extensions and user-defined tags, and how both helped ultimately give us GEDCOM 5.5.5.
