When Projectkin first launched on Substack, #familyhistorians and #genealogists were rare finds. It's now time to stretch beyond our roots and build “Skybridges!” Learn more in my new post for Projectkin: “Skybridges Connect Communities Across Platforms” open.substack.com/pub/projectk...

iMeUsWe: Family Tree & Stories, a #genealogy social media platform for India, has received two major updates recently, including one that adds "communities" to allow you to collaborate with #genealogists outside of your family tree who share your interests.

For genealogists and historians, there are some updates to newspapers on Papers Past. A good update for Taranaki but the rest are pretty minor:
- Oamaru Mail (July-August 1916)
- Otago Daily Times (January-March 1886)
- Otago Witness (April 1909, December 1909)
- Taranaki Daily News (1936-1945)
- Timaru Herald (June 1913) -
Clooz 4.4.1 is out, and for those #genealogists using Windows it's a very handy research utility, interacting with Ancestral Quest, Family Historian, Legacy Family Tree, and #rootsmagic It helps you manage your #genealogical documents/records, and points you towards other records.

For those #genealogists use Google #Chrome during their #genealogy research and #Ancestry and to a lesser extent #MyHeritage and #familysearch there is an interesting browser extension to check out for those sites:

For those #genealogists using WikiTree, the WikiTree Browser Extension has had several preview updates this month, with a couple of new features (Space Drafts and Image Table) for the #genealogy web browser extension :

For those #genealogists who have their own websites, you might want to look at "Hirtius a (online) Historical Research Assistant" (emphasis on the historical) - it's software with very basic genealogy functionality, combined with photo management and a wiki. It won't replace a full-featured online genealogy app, but it could be an interesting research/collaboration tool:

@[email protected] @[email protected] #genchat As someone who is still "the secret" to some in my family, I ask you to consider that the need that some feel for these secrets is rooted in shame & this kind of shame is quite unhealthy for everyone involved. Of course, I'm not proposing that no care should be taken or that anyone should be deliberately outed via a public family tree. But I do think that #genealogists should be concerned with truthfulness in their documentation & shouldn't perpetuate misinformation.

It is that kind of Wednesday with #genealogy
I know sand boxes are a way to parse out fact from fiction but I really dislike creating them. They are so time consuming trying to convince others why it was needed in the first place.
As a ProGen, it was extremely challenging convincing people that #DNA #ethnicity reporting can actually hinder research. But with very little paper trails, #family #folklore and #stories change from fiction to fact. Aaagh.

@jayperry I hope you will! (I need to share some of my own interesting/funny family 🌳 finds one of these days. Used to do that on the dead bird site but I think there are more #genealogists on Mastodon to appreciate them.)
P.S. On your blog post you wrote, “My grandmother passed away a few years ago and left behind mountains of stuff. She had a habit of clinging to things.” My late grandmother & mom, bless ‘em, also kept tons of documents, letters, old address books… ain’t this the truth!👇

My father asked me to write a post about his foster father. Between his personal knowledge and my research skills, I have now published the post. Will eventually be put on #Wikitree as well. #genealogists #genealogy https://suewyatt.edublogs.org/2023/09/12/keith-henry-harry-avery/

#Police Are Getting #DNA Data From People Who Think They Opted Out
#Forensic #genetic #genealogists like Cece Moore skirt #GEDmatch #privacy rules by hunting for relatives just as traditional genealogists do but with a twist: They work with #lawenforcement agencies and use commercial databases to search for people who can help identify remains or perpetrators who left DNA at #crimescene. Moore among fields biggest evangelists, boasts of having helped close over 200 cases.

POLICE ARE GETTING DNA DATA FROM PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY OPTED OUT
#Forensic #genetic #genealogists skirted GEDmatch #privacy rules by searching users who explicitly opted out of sharing DNA with law enforcement.

@kwheaton @PattyHankins @thedanielsgenealogy @genealogy
I couldn't agree more with all your points. I am still weaning myself off of the #deadbirdsite but finding the community here is growing. It's slow growth but hopefully we can convince more to join us in this kinder social media.
#Genealogists and #Historians... Invite a friend!
(I should probably make sure to thank, my friend, @Flominator for forcing me over here 😁)

Exploring OpenAI's new Code Interpreter: It executes code, analyzes data, creates charts, and interacts with genealogical databases. A notable advance for #genealogists!

That's all for now. Stay tuned for more updates. Take care, everyone! 7/7
P.S. Don't miss Dr. Mollick's lengthy but insightful post: https://www.oneusefulthing.org/p/it-is-starting-to-get-strange

Although OpenAI teased image, audio, and video processing in March, the access to Code Interpreter is the feature I've been eagerly anticipating. I believe it holds immense potential, especially for genealogists. Let's see what the future holds! 6/7

Dr. Mollick has shared his Code Interpreter research through lengthy Twitter threads. To access his reports, you can run a Twitter search for "Code Interpreter" (from:emollick). 5/7 This link might also help: https://twitter.com/search?q=%22Code%20Interpreter%22%20(from%3Aemollick)&src=typed_query

A professor at Wharton has been granted early access to the Code Interpreter. To truly understand its usefulness, I encourage you to read about the discoveries documented by Dr. Ethan Mollick. While his examples and research focus on business, he has also explored use cases from the humanities. 4/7
