  1. Begging for My Mother: Find A Grave and the Strangers Who Collect Our Dead

This morning I signed into Find A Grave to update my mother's memorial and discovered that I no longer manage her page. No email warned me. Nothing in my account records the change. Six family memorials, five of them sponsored with my own money in the weeks after my mother died, and my name has been stripped from every one. The site that once made me beg for custody of my own dead has taken that custody back, in silence, and left me to discover the loss the way you discover a missing wallet: by reaching for something that should be there. 2. In order to get a picture of the grave of Otto #Steurenthaler in #Probstried in #Allgäu, I created a #FindAGrave profile for him and added a picture request in July 2025. When the request was fulfilled this February, I asked the photographer, if I may use the photo on the #WikiTree profile wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthale as well. Now she replied, that I may use it and that she recognized him from WikiTree profile. They didn't know each other, but she would meet him outside sometimes and nod at him.

  3. I finally understood how the profile of Joseph #Pfefferle at #FindAGrave could have such a different month of birth, than what my research suggested it should be. Also, I'm a bit proud of my conclusions to identify the origin of this German immigrant to #Shelby from #Münstertal.

  5. Almost got last weeks Wikipedia, and do have FindAGrave, editing goals done.

On #Wikipedia, I primarily search for missing, reliable citations and on #FindAGrave, I link the newly departed who are missing parents or spouses with the previously departed.

With my Parkinson's, I have to do these tasks when my meds are "turned on" and my brain doesn't have a "banana up its tailpipe."

On Wikipedia, sometimes if it is important enough and it's not a page under heavy editing because of a current event, I will drop a cite in the talk page if I don't feel safe enough to do an edit without screwing the page up if my brain is misfiring too much. Somebody is usually watching the page and it gets done.

  9. @Anne

  10. I made a #FindAGrave #userscript update to use the "original name" from the page in searches, if it exists.

It's common to find an "original name" listed on pages for people who used pen names or stage names. This should have no effect on pages without it.

  11. Das Bild des Grabes meines Ur-Ur-Großvaters bei #FindaGrave hochgeladen!

  13. I'm not going to lie, I thought this feature already existed, but the #FindaGrave mobile app (at least the iOS version) just added the ability to view photo requests from your volunteer cemeteries and areas near your location.

  14. #Genealogy rant:
#FindAGrave just made many changes to the site; most seem pointless or aggravating. The worst: 🌸 scrapbooks are no longer arranged in horizontal rows of 6 images but in 1 LONG vertical row! 😵‍💫
And FG added THIS to memorial searches:
“Death year must be in the past.”
    (Duh, they’re graves! 🤪)
“Birth year must come before death year.”
(Yeah, that’s ALWAYS been the order of birth & death! 🙄)
“Birth year must be in the past.”
(Again, they’re graves, not baby shower registries! 😖)

  15. Returning from a month trip in #england, where I photographed as many churches, #cathedrals, cemeteries, and historical markers as I could. Over 10,000 uploaded to #findagrave from many places including Cambridge, Ely, Norwich, Oxford, Winchester, Salisbury, Worcester, Pershore, Evesham, Cheltenham, Tewkesbury, Hereford, Shrewsbury, Chester, Northwich, Carlisle, Nottingham, Chesterfield, Lincoln, Derby, Leicester, St Albans, and more to come. More specifics here:

  16. Dear #FindAGrave, I really planned on telling you about this duplicate cemetery, but having to register for your forum, which requires a strong password and three security questions and email validation, only to tell me that somebody manually has to approve my account. I think I changed my mind ... again!

  17. Update on my quest to get an existing person on #FindAGrave as "Famous"..... it was approved within three hours of submission. Yay!

They took my short bio + added to it. Maybe he captured someone's heart.

I learned something else too... if a memorial is "Famous", FG becomes the memorial manager.

  18. Learned something new today when a #FindAGrave memorial manager turned down my request to make one as "famous" because...

FG requires an originally written biography and.... "Please do not confuse importance with fame."

  19. I've been very happy to find useful information recently from #FindAGrave so I decided yesterday to take photos of random graves nearby and upload them to hopefully share the joy.
I must resist the urge to start researching them all! #genealogy #fascinating

  20. Today, I came across a Find A Grave memorial for an ancestor where the memorial owner had the wrong date of death despite having a photograph of the grave marker and a reference to a census mortality schedule that provided the specific date of death. Their justification for denying this physical evidence: it contradicted multiple family trees on Ancestry.com. Sometimes people are so frustrating. #Genealogy #familyhistory #research #FindAGrave

  21. I've been putting my annual leave to good use, building out families who married into my broader tree. This week I added my Great Uncle Bob's in-laws, only to learn they were influential in the early Australian Labor Party in Victoria. So very interesting! I feel another #notable profile coming on, #wikitree and #findagrave.

#geneadons, do you have extra research time this Christmas/New Year?

  22. Hot on the heels of creating my first Notable profile on #Wikitree for Julius Siede, celebrated 19th century flautist, composer and conductor, I have now contributed to elevating his #FindAGrave memorial to Famous status.

There's a discrepancy between the cemetery's recorded birth date of 1828 and other sources that say 1825, but in the absence of a contemporary primary record I'm leaving that be for the moment.

I'm proud of this accomplishment :)

  23. #December 17, 1901
    #OTD Rachel #Peden, #Indiana #Writer & #Naturalist, is born.

    She wrote:
    #Rural Free: A #Farmwife's #Almanac of #Country Living (1961)
    Speak to the #Earth (1974)
    The #Land, the People (1966), Indiana #University #Author #Award #Winner

When I was researching Rachel, I #Found her #FindAGrave #Memorial, which ends with these #Words:

Find A Grave has determined that Rachel does not meet their #Criteria for being #Famous,
    but they are #Wrong.

    #Remember Her

  24. Reaching out to #UpperCanada #families
Thomas and Bethia (KIDD) ATKINSON had 14 children!
Listed are spouses, census years found (in colour) and #FindAGrave references
Are you descended from any of them? #genealogy
    SLR🍀🐰

  25. @wikitree I find myself relying increasingly on #FindAGrave to get a death date hint that unlocks the primary record. When it's a new research subject, Vic BDM may not include enough information in the index to narrow down to the correct person. Combined with information from FG - especially if they are buried with a spouse in the same plot - can be the key that leads to the primary record.

#Trove is another invaluable piece in the process.
