  11. Half-baked idea: #LLM enhanced #GEDCOM correction.

Dunno if you've ever used GEDCOM formatting for #genealogy before, but it's a very non-standard standard, if you get my meaning. Seems like a perfect use case for a little chaos engine to wrangle.

I'm working on #WikiTree and #GEDCOM to DITA converters. These can help getting the bulk of the content into DITA. I'll soon put together a video that demos these tools so you can get an overview of the process.

I'm hoping to repurpose my technical publishing expertise to something more meaningful than "tech" publishing.

  18. I just gotta say .. I hate it when I run into a WikiTree profile that was the result of a GEDCOM import. It reads like a raw data dump, and the references/sources are a rat’s nest, usually with very little meaningful content. They are typically orphaned, and take ages to clean up. Bah.

  34. Double checking that my family reconstitution #code still runs ok on my #MacOS upgraded #Mac. The only #Python #program I have ever written. 233 lines of Python code (upgraded a while back to Python 3) to reconstitute families from baptism and marriage indexes from Scottish parish registers. After figuring out families it outputs the resulting family groups in #GEDCOM format to load into an external lineage linked genealogy database. Still gobsmacked the code basically worked first time 😜

  37. So, if anyone is having #StickerShock from #AncestryCom price increases, I would advise downloading your GEDCOM file, then find another service. I would also advise downloading any photos and important records as well. Making people pay just to preserve their trees is extortion, imho. I have links to Windows software, but if anyone knows of a free Mac OS GEDCOM editor, please let me know. Most of the Mac ones seem to be paid software.

  41. @Ponga
If you're like me, your computer might have a folder full of record images (birth, marriage, death certificates, etc.); it's not hard to imagine asking an AI script to process that folder of records and generate a sourced family tree (#GEDCOM file) suggesting the relationships between everyone mentioned in the folder.

It's going to be a crazy year.

  42. Loving the new #GPT4--now with proper source citations! A personal #genealogy #storyteller that processes #GEDCOM files & generates reports. It even matches narrative styles to settings for authentic family tales! It handles sources in GEDCOM files & creates footnotes/endnotes, no hallucinations. Can't wait for visual record text extraction & handwriting recognition!
    Here's a write-up of my discoveries this week: asheancestors.org/2023/03/17/a
    #genealogy #geneadons #familyHistory #genealogyAI #ChatGPT

  43. #GPT4 can create, read, and interpret #GEDCOM files with ease. I tested it with a simple #PROMPT ("Create a GEDCOM file for John Smith, born 1863, father unknown, mother was Riley Bower") and it generated a flawless GEDCOM file. To test, I imported it into #RootsMagic, with no issues. Plus, #ChatGPT crafted a family story from a 4-gen GEDCOM export. PROMPT: "Below is a GEDCOM file. Use the information in the file to write a biographical narrative #genealogy #geneadons #familyHistory #genealogyAI

  44. #GPT4 processes visual input! Imagine creating a #GEDCOM from a folder of record images in seconds! Soon we could drop birth, marriage, or death records into the AI for extraction, transforming them into text, stories, CSV files, and more. #genealogy #geneadons #familyhistory #genealogyAI

  45. Bit genealogy problem I'm wrestling with ... Many genealogy programs create "Descendants of" text-based narrative reports. They all have a formulaic structure and work from the oldest generation to the youngest. I have quite a few but I no longer have the database that created them. Are there any tools that can "scrape" the data into an #Excel or #Gedcom format? Or even go part-way there? @genealogy @geneadons
