You gotta hand it to the #Fediverse, it’s random new followers with thirst-trap selfies on brand new accounts are of a qualitatively higher class than the #FowlPlace or LinkedIn.
I honestly don’t know whether the latest is authentic or not. -
Once again, my luck hits on the right approach…
I spent months working with my #FowlPlace account (& a handful of joke accounts) to delete all data & activity, until they got annoyed with my efforts to un-like everything I’d liked (which failed because they're broken) after deleting every tweet & unretweeting every retweet. The account was killed for “inauthentic activity" months ago.
There is nothing left for them to now decide to slurp into the #AI sewer. https://mastodon.social/@mcc/113324561126619404 -
I have somehow acquired more followers on the #Fediverse in under 2 years than I ever had at the #FowlPlace in over a decade.
Not so thrilled that it means my 'reach' now seems to extend into a sample that is showing glimmers of Sturgeon's Law at the fringes.For the 10%’s sake, I can only ask that you read what I write carefully. If you engage, please understand that I’m not here on any sort of crusade and I’m not interested in doing battle. Do not seek a fight.
I surrender by blocking.

Clearly the #Fediverse is maturing.
In my new followers I see 2 which are almost certainly inauthentic: “real name” in username, following many more (10X+) than follow them, randomly anodyne bios, very few toots, all either boosts of random slop or trite generic advicey stuff. No conversations.
I got these steadily back in the #FowlPlace and blocked them as they followed me because most were clearly thirst-traps posting cheesecake shots. There I blocked on sight. Not sure that fits these.
-
Someone I follow at the #FowlPlace just posted a picture of her grandmother’s (antique Rossi) revolver and I am now inordinately worried about the safety of someone I barely know.
-
@palecur They’re more important here than at the #FowlPlace because there’s no full-text search across instances (and for many instances, even locally,) the population is a bit sparse, and propagation is imperfect. Hashtags improve people’s ability to find toots *and people* that they enjoy reading but might otherwise never find.

@DrKerryS Good point, and thanks for the reminder. I added pronouns to my profile. The #birdsite has become quite a #fowlplace lately, so cultivating community here is a good thing to do.

#NewHere, got it. I don't wish to offend anyone. Is there any protocol when Masting (?) aka typing to someone, like I am with you now? Any unwritten rules of communication you can think of? I assume Boosting is akin to Liking on #FowlPlace? I tend to "like" with some abandon, I enjoy supporting folks.
Read your posts b/4 follow, you seem like a fun, thoughtful, kind person. I am so pleased to meet you. Promise not to pester you. Oh, I am an animal lover, will trawl for them too! TY ☮️ -

I'd occasionally click through to the #FowlPlace to check on a couple of accounts that hadn't migrated away. Except my timeline no longer exists.
It's not my adblocker, it's not been deleted — I can see my own timeline and list of followers — but both the real and 'for you' timelines are acting like I'm a new user so I can't see who I follow.

It is blatant that they squashed #SOTU over in the #FowlPlace. Lots of related stuff trending, but somehow not the main tag.

"Thousands of small developers may have to shut down free tools like #ThreadReaderApp or #RemindMe_ofThis, the Verge reported, impacting hundreds of thousands of followers who rely on small developers to build tools that help maximize their engagement with the platform."
This latest news from #Twitter is basically leading me to almost total disengagement from the #FowlPlace.
I have disconnected my blog from Twitter (I don't think I have posted from my site to Twitter since late last year). I still follow some Twitter users and lists in #Inoreader (mostly Twitter hold-outs). I suspect that will end too.
The end result is that Twitter becomes yet another service I have an account on, and mostly return to a couple times a year to remind myself how lousy it is.

I did pretty much the same thing late last year when I started my #Twitter hiatus. I decided to shift as many of my #FowlPlace related feeds to my #RSS reader, #Inoreader:

One small thing I miss from the #FowlPlace is the easy identification of cryptobros, and thus the ability to silence hexagons as soon as they emerge, without even having to check their profiles.

@Fryto EN tech już siedzi tutaj od dawna. Nie mam skrupułów. Na #fowlplace już tylko raz dziennie sprawdzam powiadomienia i wrzucę linka, ale nie czytam timeline od tygodni.

Re: last boost
I tend not to circulate stuff directly from the #FowlPlace (indeed, I filter them and only click through when I'm of a mind) but I feel that one in particular is worth breaking my general "no direct RTs" policy.
-
Thinking on what I can only call "creeping desensitization," AKA the frog sitting in the pot of gradually boiling water. I've been on this platform less than 2 months. Recently I was mostly a #FowlPlace user. Has been years since I had much presence on #Facebook. But occasionally I do have to go back there for specific reasons, including support for clients. Yesterday I did, and .... 😩 🤮 🤦♀️ ‼️ How did we ever tolerate the fire-hose stream of ads & obnoxiousness?? I like to think of myself as

That the world is so full of failson techbros that #GlassOnion is not obviously _just_ about the #FowlPlace buyer is a sad indictment of the state of the world.
But at the same time, seeing Gay Southern Poirot exclaiming "you vainglorious buffoon!" with such power is a hell of a lot of fun in its own right.

…rather than just the bad. And, for me, "I have finished a book, and it's my new baby, and OMG look at it" is the biggest news of all.
On #FowlPlace I actually still advertise. Pinned banners etc. Here, I share. On January 1 there will be A Thing I am very proud of, and I will talk about it. Not 24 times a day with a "buy here" link, but I sure will.
I hope all #creators and #artists share their work with me, too. I want to know. And if it becomes too much… that's why mute/unfollow exist. /end

@mathieucomandon Yeah, there are a couple of truly fascinating feeds that I will miss, but after a month this feels like home now. Going to the #FowlPlace is like taking a trip to the annoying shopping mall. You do it once in a while, but you wouldn’t if you didn’t have to ;)

👋 Hopefully hello to "old" #FowlPlace friends now here in the Fediverse. Few min ago I saw a good suggestion to RErun #Movetodon. Done. Found a whole LOT more. Should have thought about that before, especially after the last few weeks, but hopefully better late than never--before the app gets the boot along with the rest of us.
-
@bjornlarssen Mine was never in my email and my old website is long gone. New one (whenever I get around to it), may or may not contain any such links. Haven't even decided yet, but def not the #FowlPlace.
-
Hey folks I know the #FowlPlace is dying and that is great and wonderful, but can I also suggest we abandon another billionaire owned fiefdom known as #GoodReads.
The good news there's a book tracking solution for that here in the fediverse. It's called #BookWyrm. Just like Mastodon here... over on BookWyrm you pick a server and you can even download your Goodreads content and bring it right over lock & stock.

-
@mmpadellan Welcome! I followed you at the #FowlPlace. Glad you've made the move.
-
I put my (gasp) #Mastodon link on my #FowlPlace profile & pinned post weeks ago, hoping some friends would follow. So far it's still there.
*Cue Jaws music: DUMdaDUMdaDUMda....🎶
Making bets with myself about when it will be zapped. Or account zapped? Or whatever. 🤷♀️ Trying to decide if I pick the correct day whether or not I earn a large bottle of Disaronno Amaretto. I'm thinking yes. Or if someone else picks correct day, do I have to buy one for them? 🤔 Decisions, decisions....

#Newbie folks, please, just PLEASE take a moment or two to do a small bio? Blank accounts, even those (maybe especially those?) with one avatar pic that's also enlarged for a banner pic give me the heebie-jeebies. Might be post- #FowlPlace trauma. But for me it has creepy lemme-into-your-DM vibes. I already know the single neurosurgeons & lonely foreign princes are here trolling. Realistic assurances help. I hope the mostly-forthright nature of this place can survive the #TwitterMigration.
-
if you're still posting twitter links to the Fediverse you're doing it wrong
-
@profgalloway @alexskolnick yeah I’m a fan of the Dawg, so in theory I’d be inclined to check it out, but there’s a waitlist. In the meantime, it feels like 90% of my follows are here now, although it seems a bit niche (tech+journo) for now. No music manufacturers etc, so still have to go back to the #FowlPlace for my gear news ;) But with gov’ts establishing themselves here, I’d say the future of “open” is looking bright :)

The tracker for a certain billionaire with a fragile ego has been booted from the #FowlPlace but now they're here: @elonjet

A friend of mine spent a week trying to log back in to #FowlPlace, pleading with the support for help… and the resolution the support finally came up with for her was "disable 2FA." First, the texts kept not arriving. Then, "an unknown error has occurred, try again later." Finally…

We still do #FollowFriday on Mastodon and these are mine for this week! The list is mostly journalists, including ones banned yesterday from the #FowlPlace
@mmasnick (founder of TechDirt)
@drewharwell (WaPo)
@donieosullivan (CNN)
@MattBinder (Mashable)
@tony (banned)
@micahflee (The Intercept)
@oneunderscore__ (NBC, among others)Edit: I left off @w7voa on accident

Here's a #QRcode to https://www.joimastodon.org for our #twitterexodus friends to leave on the #fowlplace site if you're want to add a last tweet there or just as a general promo tool for Mastodon.
-
I guess decreasing traffic at the #fowlplace is one way to lower infrastructure costs. First, you fire the engineers then the advertisers, and then the users.... That should guarantee a lower cost structure :)
-
I'm disappointed my #fowlplace account hasn't been banned yet (a ban there is a new badge of honor). I shouldn't have deleted those tweets critiquing #elonmusk
-
This quote by @virginiaheffernan nicely encapsulates the #FowlPlace trap!
"Users of Twitter, like consumers of porn, find themselves amused and stimulated, and then scroll compulsively, chasing the dragon of human connection, only to find themselves scrolling through doom, and finally scrolling for doom."

There have been a number of well-meaning and justifiable calls for people to just leave the #FowlPlace. I agree with them (at least the many thoughtful posts I've read).
Just looking at the state of the #FowlPlace and the behaviour of the person running it, I feel like it is also important to recognise that almost all of you took the step to leave that place, and create a better space for yourself in the #Fediverse.
So, well done to you for taking a big step into a new and unknown space. For many it was a leap of faith that there are better digital spaces.
By making that leap you have also been instrumental, in your way, in creating this #GoodPlace that we now share.
It's not a perfect space because we are not perfect, but it is a better space. Thank you. 🙏

Reminder: if you are breaking up with the #fowlplace make sure you remove #twitter from your other social profiles or your site.
-
Social networks like #twitter only exist as long as they are part of the conversation.
An old internet rule is "don't feed the trolls."
What if we stopped talking about the #BirdSite (more and more of a #FowlPlace) ?
Wouldn't that hasten its demise?
-
@alexwinter You're mostly speaking to the converted here, I suspect.
On one hand I'd love to share your thoughts on the #FowlPlace in the hopes of persuading some hold-outs I respect to see the light.
On the other hand, I don't want to feed the beast. 🤔

This morning I received another notification on the #FowlPlace app that a dodgy-looking Twitter handle started following a list I created for myself comprising "Inspiring women and non-binary" people.
Seeing that immediately reminded me of this explanation from @vkc about the risks of these sorts of lists to people in the lists.
https://mspsocial.net/@vkc/109484849607178091
I immediately went to delete the list. I don't want a list I created for myself to follow inspiring people to be potentially abused.
-
I still have the #FowlPlace app on my phone for the occasional peek at something I find useful there.
I have been receiving notifications about tweets that are promoted to me under the guide of "Business Personalities" that most definitely are not, and I don't want to be recommended to anyone, let alone me!
Ugh! 🤢
-
One aspect of the #FowlPlace that I do enjoy are the balloons you see in your birthday. That's a fun touch.
Maybe we could have animated elephants spraying water from their trunks on #Mastodon on your profile page on your birthday (if you add your birthday to an as yet nonexistent profile field)? 😊
-
I don't remember who coined the term #FowlPlace instead of #BirdSite but I really think we should switch to #FowlPlace. It has all the cool connotations.
-
Decided to take a more permanent break from the #FowlPlace. I’ve been mainly on this account for the last month and it’s been awesome. Thanks for making #sfba so wonderful, y’all.
