I think I may have figured out why I can juggle torches but not if they're on fire.
Normally, I hold them with the wick end slightly downward, as I would with clubs. On fire, this would lead to burns, so I have to have the torches rotated up a bit. This throws off how much they have to rotate on each toss.
(At night, it's also a problem that I can't see the flipping, non-burning end that I'm trying to catch, but I knew that.)

I have to choreograph my number for next week's New Student Orientation fire show, but there are two problems:
1) Because of the crispy landscape, the Fire Marshal has a burn ban on. This has happened for at least the last six years, so we have LED props we can spin.
2) Because of wildfires, the air quality is too low to engage in vigorous aerobic activity outdoors. The weather forecast is "haze".
