Plans for #FamilyHistoryMonth: finish off the Zotero translator for Recollect (lots of local history sites use Recollect); fix Libraries Tasmania Zotero translator (make sure digitised resources are being attached properly after changes to the site); update of the Trove Places app that locates places newspapers were published/distributed on a map (without an API key I've have to update the data manually)...

"The possibility of grand voyages and cross-country treks to lesser visited lands were what small town Pennsylvania boys read about in books, dreams turned into reality only by the most stout hearted and swashbuckling of pioneer souls—men like Theodore Mink." Among the treasure trove of data found in the military records and U.S. Civil War Pension files of one of the formerly enslaved Black men who enlisted with the 47th Pennsylvania Volunteers is this excerpt from affidavit filed by the widow of one of the men on September 11, 1894: “I have no income at all from any source … except my labor from a few chickens, about 20 or 30 cents a month from eggs & chickens.”

"In the strange system and series of paradoxes which make up human life, it often happens that the very disciples of 'good will' and brotherly love must buckle on the harness of war. Such emphatically is the case in our present contest. Nor should it be otherwise...."

Another of the photos being preserved for future history students by "Faces of the 47th," a special project of "47th Pennsylvania Volunteers: One Civil War Regiment's Story," is this 1863 carte de visite of the Rev. William D.C. Rodrock, chaplain of the 47th Pennsylvania from 1861-1865. He narrowly escaped death after a bullet pierced his Union Army kepi during the American Civil War. I'm working to purchase the military and pension records of formerly enslaved Black men who enlisted with the 47th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. (These records have not yet been digitized by the National Archives.)
I've already obtained and digitized records for several of the men, but need help to finish the job. The cost is approx. $110 per soldier. Please donate whatever you can: https://www.gofundme.com/f/honor-9-black-soldiers-of-the-american-civil-war

Among the photos that "47th Pennsylvania Volunteers: One Civil War Regiment's Story" has helped to locate and digitize as part of its "Faces of the 47th" project is that of First Lieutenant William M. Hendricks. Learn more about his life and family here: https://47thpennsylvaniavolunteers.com/officers/roster-field-and-staff-officers-47th-pennsylvania-volunteers/william-m-hendricks-1st-lieutenant/

It's the beginning of American Archives Month and Family History Month. And it's #ManuscriptMonday! (A history trifecta, woohoo!)
What better day than today to take a look at the manuscript collections of "47th Pennsylvania Volunteers: One Civil War Regiment's Story"? First up? The letters of Sergeant John G. Helfrich that the 47th Pennsylvania project is helping to preserve: https://47thpennsylvaniavolunteers.com/letters-home/the-scribes-of-the-47th-pennsylvania-volunteers/sergeant-john-gross-helfrich-yearning-for-peace-while-fighting-for-country-cause-and-honor/john-g-helfrichs-civil-war-letters-pennsylvania-volunteers-47th-regiment-january-1862-spring-1864/

In addition to being #ArchivesMonth, October is #FamilyHistoryMonth. Among the great tips offered by Family History Magazine?
1. Dedicate a full day to in-person genealogy research.
2. Organize your family photos.
3. Engage kids with genealogy. Excavate Grandpa’s attic, interview a relative, or visit family graves.More ideas here: https://familytreemagazine.com/projects/family-history-month/#kids

For #familyHistoryMonth I've updated last year's post about #familyHistory resources in the #GLAMWorkbench – 10 million GLAM name records, #Trove articles as images, and more! https://updates.timsherratt.org/2023/08/18/family-history-resources.html #genealogy #histodons

ooops I've already fallen behind in my #FamilyHistoryMonth postings... Here's one for today. If your family comes from a non-English speaking background, check out this list of #Trove newspapers published in languages other than English. There's 55 different titles, in a range of languages including Chinese, German, Dutch, French, Italian, Greek, Polish, and Ukrainian. https://github.com/GLAM-Workbench/trove-newspapers-non-english/blob/main/non-english-newspapers.md #GLAMWorkbench #familyHistory #genealogy

This coming #TroveAU change will impact on collaborative lists. The decision by a list owner to approve a collaborator would have to be based solely on username or on external communication such as FB. Will the list's FB page also go? (I have public lists but none are collaborative.)
It looks like #Trove is getting out of user collaboration. The public forum went years ago. It's understandable. Part of the shifting role of Trove. Your thoughts? #familyHistory #familyHistoryMonth

#FamilyHistoryMonth is the perfect time of year to dig into the more complex and nuanced aspects of your own family history. Our most recent podcast guest, Dr. Christine Sleeter, encourages you to take a critical look at your family history. Doing so can help you gain a deep understanding of how your family fits into our shared history and how systemic structures impacted them, and ultimately you. #OurDigitalFutures #CriticalFamilyHistory

It's #familyHistoryMonth in Australia, so I'm going to try and post something every day from the #TroveDataGuide & #GLAMWorkbench that could be useful for people researching #genealogy, #familyHistory, & #locaHistory.
First up is the Tasmanian Post Office Directories – a full-text database that lets you to search for names and addresses across all 48 volumes digitised by Libraries Tasmania from 1890 to 1948. And it's free! https://glam-workbench.net/tasmanian-post-office-directories/ #histodons

Before #FamilyHistoryMonth ends, I thought I should update my GLAM Name Index Search. There's 18 new datasets, so in total there's now 279 datasets from 10 Australian GLAM organisations – almost 12 million rows of data! And it's free! Just type a name in the search box to get started. https://updates.timsherratt.org/2024/08/26/more-datasets-added.html #GLAM #openData #familyHistory #genealogy #histodons @histodons

A researcher working on a #onePlaceStudy discovered my fully-searchable version of the Tasmanian Post Office Directories today and she said "a cloud has lifted". She even bought me 3 coffees. 😊
It's here if you're interested: https://glam-workbench.net/libraries-tasmania/tasmanian-post-office-directories/ Useful for #histodons & #familyHistory too. Share it around for #familyHistoryMonth.

On Twitter, Public Record Office Victoria has highlighted that #FamilyHistoryMonth starts today.
"There are many Vic Gov records in our collection that contain information about people and places relevant to family history research. A great place to start is our Family History Topic Page."
Here's a link to that page, full of resources of use not just for #FamilyHistory but also for #LocalHistory and #OnePlaceStudy research.

What a pity #LibrariesTasmania can't find a place for the Tasmanian Post Office Directories database (created from their own digitised collections) in their list of #familyHistory resources for #familyHistoryMonth. https://glam-workbench.net/libraries-tasmania/tasmanian-post-office-directories/
