  1. Was reminded earlier about a family story that I need to write down somewhere more permanent eventually. It's one that Mom used to tell and I recounted to her the other day (she remembers the people but not her own stories).

A year or so following my grandfather's death, the gravestone had been laid and my grandmother was anxious for them to go out to the nearby rural cemetery for a first look. Off went Mom, her older brother and my grandmother. Mom at 20-ish was the youngest.

Mom said she stood there by the gravestone looking at... something wasn't right but she couldn't place her finger on what yet. Meanwhile her older brother, having seen it was just praying silently that their mother wouldn't notice it and he could quietly call Sam Carroll Memorials when they got home and get it corrected without her ever knowing. And then he heard... "CHARLES ED!" and knew that hope was gone.

What was wrong? His epitaph which was meant to read "An honest man is the noblest work of god" said "NOBELEST work of god...."

After the fact something they laughed about for years but seeing it etched in granite was apparently not as funny.

  2. Out of the garden and up the Family Tree

I harvested the last of this year's edibles this morning... Before After I need to trim the Peace/Bird Garden, especially after this week's storms, but we're still inundated with droves of hummingbirds, so there's rarely a moment to sneak out and work there. We've got another streak of humidity and heat this week, but forecast says we'll cool off in time for the Equinox, as it should. With summer chores winding down and Autumn projects still weeks away, I've turned back to my genealogy […]

  3. ❓#QuestionOfTheWeek Do you have any left-handers in your family? 🤚

    youtube.com/shorts/qhOEX5fY6tY

Handedness clusters in families but resists simple inheritance models — twin studies point to a modest genetic contribution rather than a single decisive gene. Which makes it exactly the kind of trait worth collecting anecdotally across a family tree.

Tell us about the left-handers in your family:

  4. New Podcast: Some stories preserve memories. Others preserve an entire community.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ej1twCCgGQw

In this episode of Jamie Iria Unfiltered, I’m joined by Devin Meireles, a Canadian Portuguese writer whose work is deeply rooted in identity, family, and the Portuguese immigrant experience.

We talk about what inspired him to write his books, including his newest release, Finding Madeira, and why preserving our heritage matters now more than ever. Devin also shares his journey as a creative writer, the impact of growing up in Toronto’s Portuguese community, and how personal history can become powerful storytelling.

Whether you’re passionate about writing, immigration, Portuguese culture, or discovering the stories that shape who we are, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss.

🎙️ If you’ve ever wondered where you come from and why those stories matter, this episode is for you.

  5. There was a raccoon in my mom’s attic during a family get-together.

My 6’4” brother put a laundry basket on his head for “protection.” I brought paper towels. That was the plan.

It did not go to plan.

New humorous story on Aure Free Press:

Raccoon patrol, questionable strategy, and one very unimpressed attic resident.

  7. Survival Manual for Living with a Properly Educated Italian

My mother-in-law doesn’t give advice. She drafts constitutions. Sheets must be changed exactly the right number of times, pasta must be weighed, cold is a matter of opinion—and control is a lifestyle.
Then came socks. Bronchitis. And a cat.
A gentle collapse of perfect order, fur included.

  8. This Christmas story is from two years ago, but I don't think the holiday spirit has an expiration date. Does it?

    In English:
    A Gift for Santa Claus
Santa Claus loved sitting on the veranda, in his rocking chair, warmed by the fireplace, watching the snow-capped mountain peaks and the clouds that adorned them with fantasy and elegance.
On the windows, the ice-embroidered designs were now melting. The windows clearly revealed the enchantment of dawns and sunsets with continuously changing colors.
Winter was about to end, and Santa Claus, the reindeer, and the hardworking Elves of the Woods had rested enough after the great work of the last holidays. Soon, they would need to start reorganizing ideas before another December arrived.
In the warmth of the first spring sun, with nature awakening from the long winter, plans for toys of all sorts began to take shape. In the evening, at sunset, sitting in his favorite chair, he joyfully awaited the arrival of the moon and stars.

    E in Italiano:

  9. Uncle Bub (Alfred Ralph Helton) A Story Cut Short

My Uncle Bub- This picture, that I believe was taken in early 1993- shortly before he left us, hangs in our Ancestry Hall. I was only 10 when Bub died. My memories of him are scattered and incomplete. He was my mom’s brother- one of the clan alongside Mom, Pat, Roger, and Ang. To me, he was simply “Uncle Bub,” the shoulders that carried me high above the world, handing me sour gum and candy, making me feel taller than I was. Mom loved to dance with him. She told me many times how […]

  13. In this photo, you might be able to make out a flat rocky platform in the river. The land rises above it to form a little island. It's accessible depending on how high the river is... and how far you can jump without falling in! This is "Horace's Island". Horace was my amazing uncle. Here he would play when he was little, defending his island from intruders, allowing only the select few friends on. Woe be to those that attempted an invasion! They'd go home very soggy no doubt. 😊 #FamilyStories

  15. 🎙️ I had the absolute pleasure of being a guest on the After 40 Podcast with Dr. Deborah Heiser, PhD, where we discussed something very close to my heart—helping my mom, embrace her passion for storytelling later in life and finding a powerful driving force in her life. 🌟

My mom grew up in a small village in the hills around #Florence in post-war #Italy, filled with memories of enchanting #Tuscan nights and captivating #tales. For years, those stories lived in her imagination—until her 70s, when she decided it was time to share them with the world. Together, we created Storie Sotto Le Stelle—a website and podcast where her stories come to life in Italian and English, connecting generations through the magic of #storytelling.

Writing together has become more than just crafting stories—it’s about discovering joy and purpose, or what the Japanese call #ikigai. It’s proof that it’s never too late to take creative risks, rediscover talents, and connect deeply with loved ones. 🌟

Through storytelling, we’ve built a bridge between generations, where our imaginations meet, and where new possibilities are born. Each moment spent brainstorming, drafting, and laughing over the wild twists our stories take has become a cherished part of our journey. It’s an opportunity to connect in ways we hadn’t before, creating not just stories but memories that will stay with us forever.

The heart of the message is clear: after 40, life offers us the chance to pause, reevaluate, and redefine what truly matters. Whether it’s through storytelling, painting, hiking, or any other pursuit, the key is to embrace what brings you joy and let it guide you toward purpose and connection. 🌟

🖋️ “The #magic isn’t just in the stories we create but in the process of sharing this journey together.”

🎧 I invite you to listen to the episode and discover how we turned her lifelong love of storytelling into a creative journey.

  16. A friend of mine is just a little over 100, in remarkable physical health and unbelievable mental acuity for any age. He and my deceased father share so many things: same birth year, both WWII Marines and even at same camps and South Pacific campaigns. So many times yesterday, as we talked thru the afternoon, I found myself realizing that I didn't ask my own Dad about some historical event.

So, if you're fortunate enough to have living parents, grandparents, etc, Get their stories. Ask questions. Once everyone is gone, it's too late. #family #generations #FamilyStories #history

  17. My aunt Hattie was ... let's say she was a colorful character at times.

One time she took my wife and I out to dinner at a nice restaurant. She ordered a steak medium-rare but what was brought to her was bright red and dripping bloody juices.

Aunt Hattie took one look at it and told the waiter quite loudly and emphatically,

"If I'd wanted something that raw I would have bit a cow in the ass!"

    Yes, that really happened.

  18. An interesting tale for Valentine's Day

Granville Martin Semmes II (April 3, 1927 – March 30, 2012) was an American businessman, entrepreneur, and gemcutter.

Semmes was the founder of 1-800-Flowers, a floral retailer, gift and distribution company in the United States.....or was he???

  19. Family lore is that my brother auditioned for and was going to be one of kids who plays Little Ricky on the I Love Lucy show, but he got diaper rash and so got scratched from filming.

No idea if it's true, but it's a good story.

(My parents *did* live in LA at the time and my grandmother worked at one of the better-known casting agencies, so it's entirely possible.)

(and I just saw a clip and my brother at that age *did* look a lot like the other actors)

  25. A Holiday road trip to see Mom.

Highs and Lows from the trip but there's no place like home!

Fun Fact: My uncle used to drive for JB Hunt. He is the one that showed me how to collect #FamilyStories and got me started in #Genealogy by "visiting relations" in #Appalachia.

  26. Another weird yet endearing family thing: my stepmom will show up with random gifts she felt your house needed…sometimes v useful…other times very wtf. Once she got us a 3 foot statue of a manatee because it might look good in our bathroom 😂 Anyone else have family do things like this?

  28. @PattyHankins
Personally I love to read posts that make the individuals come to life on the page, rather than a list of names and dates. The more that person becomes real, the more fascinating they become. I suspect we all grow attached to people to whom we are not related, simply by researching them for someone else’s tree.
    So for me #FamilyStories please…
