The cover of the first edition of "The Dungeon, The Dragon, and Becoming the DM Who Makes it Fun" had a bright red border. I was going for a reminiscent homage to the 1981 Basic Edition rulebook from TSR.
I recently changed the border to black and altered the title font. The content is the same.

Tonight's #stream was a success and we managed two intersting #winter themed #ttrpg battle maps in both a day and night version each. We got the wishing trees being attacked and the lair of a frost dragon.

What helps me with battle descriptions while I am running a #ttrpg campaign is to consider a roll to hit as a roll to damage, especially in #dnd where your defense is a cumulative value of everything you got to defend yourself.
Let them arrows plonk off armor, the broadsword bite into the shield and the spell puff out harmlessly on the sheer willpower of the player.
Not every miss must be a miss.

This is their reaction to almost everything that's happening in that academy and the absolute lack of ensuring the safety of students at every turn (the reminder they signed a waiver is insufficient).
I think I'm putting them through a whole lot.

22 sessions in, and we finally gotten around to engaging a bit with the extra mechanics of Strixhaven in our #homebrew version of it in one of my #dnd campaigns.
I messed a bunch of it up, because I last read about those rules 22 sessions ago, nearly half a year before, but we muddled through. Everyone now has a club, did some exams and made some friends. Not engaging with capitalism just yet, but jobs will follow eventually
Next up: Adventure!

When the question came up how post is handled at the academy, I had all players submit an idea of their own to me in private.
Then each of them (4) rolled a 1d4. The roll that came up the most often was chosen (after randomizing the list) and thus, the Hoof It! postal service was conjoured into existence by letting my players help build the world we are playing in.

I am continually tinkering with ways of making the things my players do in the campaign matter more and attach true rewards.
I have some groups that struggle a bit with tactical choices during battle.
They trained with an NPC and now they get to ask for one tip per long rest during battle.
The way I'll offer it is: "You remember the Professor telling you to target the most dangerous foe, you realize it must be the hidden archer in the back!"

It features a broken pillar at the center and is set at a dusk/dawn time frame. In my campaign the party followed some suspicious folks and got ambushed by gooey little demons as they were discovered. Luckily, they made it out alive.

I've lost two players in a group in the past few months.
Always a bit sad when things don't work out and life gets in the way or it's just not a good fit.
That #ttrpg campaign will be a bit less lively now. The core three players are still around though, so that's nice.
Can't help and question myself as a #dungeonmaster when someone leaves. Time to reflect and try and do better.

I've been running a #ttrpg campaign for a bit where I wasn't super comfortable about the story direction. I simply didn't know enough about the motivations and connections of the people around the party.
Been sitting down and drawing up some flowcharts. Here's the current status without any texts to avoid spoilers for my players.
This is much better now.
Note: Yellow Boxes are the one word motivations of each character.

Honestly, communication is more crucial than anything in #ttrpg settings. Everyone is making themselves a little vulnerable by stepping into this silly space and acting out something. Not only that, but there will be emotional attachments.
If there is any issue at all be it as a player or DM, talking about it openly and honestly is the most important thing in my opinion.

My tables recently adapted a "Majority presence means we play" rule. Any character or player that cannot make it during such a session, will either be assumed present (if there's no reasonable explanation why they wouldn't be).
This has greatly increased the frequency of our #ttrpg sessions. Of course, we do still skip sometimes, but far less often than before.
