#ColossalBiosciences said it cloned #redwolves. Is it for real?
#Redwolf has long been contentious species. Debate over its preservation got even messier last year, when Colossal said it cloned the animal. Pundits debated utility of project and whether clones—technically, #graywolves with some genetic tweaks—could really be called #direwolves. But what mattered to Broussard was Colossal’s simultaneous announcement that it cloned four red #wolves.

26 baby chickens — ranging from a few days to several months old — were born from a 3D printed lattice structure that mimics an eggshell, according to #ColossalBiosciences.
Colossal previously announced it had #GeneticallyEngineered living animals to resemble extinct species, including mice with long hair like the #WoollyMammoth & wolf pups that take after #DireWolves.

Explaining genetic sciences using gamers' terms is ingenious, but the question remains: are Dire Wolves "OP"? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mG0X_bb_jE #direwolves #gaming

It's fantastic that this particular #KRAZAM video just dropped right before I head out to meet with a C-suite client today to review and probably terminate one of their projects due to their own client being so sociopathic that it's making the team's life impossible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qf-_bRjZ38U

‘De-extinction’ of dire wolves promotes false hope: technology can’t undo extinction

For #FossilFriday my thoughts on the so-called “dire wolves” (spoiler: they're not dire wolves):

They Didn't Make Dire Wolves, They Made Something…Else

I feel like this video is an important one to share. I'm glad he also shed some light on the importance of publicly funded research, people don't seem to realize just how much of the science that comes out of private companies are built on studies from academia.

"No, the dire wolf has not been brought back from extinction
Colossal Biosciences claims three pups born recently are dire wolves, but they are actually grey wolves with genetic edits intended to make them resemble the lost species."

Pound sand, @Slate
If we're stuck living in a dystopian maga hellscape just let us have fucking dire wolves, wouldja? If it brings about the end times, so be it

As many have commented on, Colossal Biosciences has claimed to have brought dire wolves back from extinction. It is a gross exaggeration. But I want to acknowledge the great desire to bring back extinct animals in some way. I, for one, would love to see new animals similar to extinct animals. I think of all the kids (and adults) who love dinosaurs. It would be awesome to recreate these ancient animals in some way! It's about discovery and experiencing the full power of the animal kingdom.
This point is not to minimize the many real concerns about the de-extinction effort but to give perspective on why some people would want to try.

I remain utterly baffled by which direction the #DireWolves clusterfuck is falling. Yeah I get that it's PR from a company trying to do Jurassic Spa in the same way Musk is trying to do Terminator 13: Torment Nexus Gonna Be Siiiiiick or whatever, and you can't trust a word out of their mouths. But what exactly went wrong?
I ask because I thought we'd concluded that dire wolves WERE NOT WOLVES: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/dire-wolves-were-not-really-wolves-new-genetic-clues-reveal/
So when people say "Nah, these aren't dire wolves, they're just normal wolves bred from dogs." I have to raise a hand and ask wait wait are they? Because that's pretty astonishing if true. And if it's just a breed of dog they've produced, then isn't that what we already agreed dire wolves actually were? Maybe they're still not dire wolves, but why claim they're actual wolves?
I feel like everyone is lying to cover something up, and the lies all betray core misunderstandings about absolutely everything, in conflicting interference patterns.

Less dire wolves and more protection for endangered species.
Red wolves are critically endangered, but companies are spending billions on breeding wolf dogs to look like a long extinct species. Imagine what we could've been protected with that money.

Lets breed hundreds of #DireWolves & release them in the burbs. Where there are a lot of swimming pools.

it was my impression that thick white fur was more prevalent in arctic wolves, as it is obviously advantageous in such an environment. dire wolves lived in a temperate, or even rather warm region, so pale fur would certainly not be my first thought when it came to the coat colouration of dire wolves, anyone else find this suspect, especially since colossal evidently worked pretty hard to make them this colour?

my thing on the #colossal #direwolves WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR #PALEOART? obviously until that dire wolf genome is released to the public (something colossal said they would do) and is analyzed by proper scientists, and assuming what they find matches with what colossal has said (which certainly isn't a guarantee) should dire wolves be depicted in a way similar to the colossal specimens- mostly the thick white fur (more on that)

I saw various news bits about the "de-extinction" of #direwolves by adding ancient firewood DNA to grey wolf DNA. In one, they said that direwolves were as genetically apart from grey wolves as chimpanzees from humans. And that kind of gives a different perspective on the story as well: would we be celebrating or would we be horrified if a company genetically engineered chimp-human chimeras?

"#Direwolves dominated southern Canada and the United States, according to Julie Meachen, a paleontologist at Des Moines University who worked on the #ancientDNA project. And they outcompeted gray wolves, being 25 percent bigger and possessing massive teeth and jaws. They hunted horses, bison and possibly mammoths. When many of those prey species became extinct — probably in part because of human hunters — the dire wolf may have been doomed, and the gray wolf swept down from northern Canada and Alaska to fill the ecological void."

Not sure what I think about them bringing back extinct flora and fauna. Didn’t they see Jurassic Park?

And it was another fine night out for a show last night with #DireWolves at the #MakeOutRoom here in SF -- long zoney and great psych jams? But of course. Credit also to Graffiti Phallico aka members of the #Mystic-100s up from LA for their opening set. #music

Real #wolves are fascinating, beautiful, awe-inspiring creatures. #Direwolves were pretty neat too. I really wish people could appreciate the actual animals without feeling the need to mythologize them.
