Metro Times, Invisible Institute file lawsuit against Michigan State Police for access to records | Detroit | Detroit Metro Times
Metro Times and a nonprofit news organization teamed up to file a lawsuit Monday against the Michigan State Police for refusing to disclose public records about the identities of current and former police officers.
The lawsuit, filed in the Michigan Court of Claims by the University of Michigan’s Civil Rights Litigation Initiative, alleges MSP violated the Michigan Freedom of Information Act by refusing to divulge the data.
Among other things, Metro Times and the Invisible Institute requested the names of all certified and uncertified officers in Michigan, along with information about their employment history. The information is held by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES), which is housed within the MSP.
The request for the data was part of a project to create a national database to identify, track, and report on “wandering officers” who move from department to department after engaging in misconduct.

Detroit Police Commissioner Willie Burton is calling on the city to ban the use of surveillance technologies, saying similar tools are being used by Israel to oppress Palestinians.
Burton says surveillance technologies such as facial recognition and ShotSpotter, which are used in Detroit, “are used by the Israeli state to wrongfully criminalize innocent Palestinians, just like here they are used to criminalize Black and Brown Americans.”
“I stand opposed to technocracism and call on the City to ban the use of these technologies, as I call on the United States government to support the Palestinian people and ban Israeli access to US surveillance systems,” Burton tells Metro Times in a statement.

A day after President Joe Biden joined striking United Auto Workers on the picket line in Michigan alongside UAW President Shawn Fain, the labor leader says he has no intention of meeting with former President Donald Trump when he speaks Wednesday at a non-union automotive parts manufacturer and supplier in Macomb County.
Fain, speaking Tuesday on CNN’s “The Situation Room” with Wolf Blitzer, said he saw no reason to meet the GOP former president who is running again in 2024.
“I don’t think the man has any bit of care about what our workers stand for, what the working class stands for,” he told Blitzer. “He serves the billionaire class and that’s what’s wrong with this country.”

According to a new study of the best U.S. cities to own an electric car, Detroit ranked dead last. The study was conducted by roofing company Gnome Roof, which helps connect consumers with solar power panel installation providers to help charge their electric cars.

Kid Rock was caught drinking Bud Light and we can't stop laughing at him
Michigan native Kid Rock joined a cancel culture crusade against Bud Light earlier this year when he flipped out over the beer brand partnering with trans activist and influencer Dylan Mulvaney.
He got his panties in a twist because Anheuser-Busch sent Mulvaney a can with her face on it to celebrate her first “365 Days of Girlhood.” In fact, that flimsy aluminum beer can upset the little snowflake so much that he posted a video of himself shooting cases of the beer with a semiautomatic rifle while looking like he was going to cry.
It was just the latest in a series of performative, high-profile “canceling”s from the “anti-woke” political right — you know, the group who is always whining about cancel culture? Hmmm.
Anyway, after that very public (and well-publicized) anti-trans tantrum, Kid Rock was spotted just casually drinking a Bud Light at Skydeck in Nashville the other day while watching a Colt Ford show.

The Great Lakes State has long held space in the national imagination as perhaps the ultimate symbol of Rust Belt industrial decline. Though Michigan’s reputation is changing, it’s still often written off and overlooked.
Maybe it’s high time that changes.
According to a new study of the top 10 states to live and work in the U.S., Michigan is the best.
The analysis by Softworks, a workforce management company, considered a range of factors for the study, including wages, cost of living, housing affordability, and overall happiness.
We believe that Michigan’s position as the top state is a testament to its ongoing efforts in fostering economic growth and providing an environment conducive to personal and professional fulfillment,” the authors wrote, adding, “As the hub of the automotive industry, Michigan has a strong economy and a low cost of living, making it an attractive option for those looking to settle down in the Midwest. Its cities, such as Detroit and Grand Rapids, are undergoing revitalization efforts and have a growing entrepreneurial spirit.”
Like other Midwest states, Michigan has experienced a “blue wave” in recent years that sees Democrats in control of the state government for the first time in nearly 40 years. While its population has declined in recent years, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is trying to curb the brain drain of young people leaving the state by pushing progressive policies such as reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights. In her 2023 State of the State speech, Whitmer declared, “Bigotry is bad for business.”
