🧵 … so, taking the risk to call it a day with even more frustration, I asked #AI again, this time for a #Jack client that converts #MIDI #ProgramChange into #MidiCC and this is what it looks like:

Dunno if the CC value range makes sense, it might be wrong and should be 0…127.

But it does the job of converting the 8 Program Change pads of my AKAI LPD8 MIDI Controller into something that the #MidiChannelize plugin can use. So I can route incoming MIDI notes to channels 1…8, using the 8 pads.

Resulting in 8 separate instances of #DecentSampler that can be “activated” using my MIDI controller.

Now this is really not how #MainStage would do things, and it's quite complicated. Also it only works because Decent Sampler can be set to disable its FX when playing back samples, so it won't eat any CPU.

Yet, sometimes doing things in strange ways can create new concepts that turn out pretty straightforward. I will see.

🧵 … so I have spent two hours now trying to switch plugin presets in #Carla using #MIDI Program Change, and either I have missed something, or it's not possible.

I could load 16 instances of #DecentSampler and use the Channelize plugin to route my input single to 16 different sampler instances using 16 different MIDI channels, but I cannot remote-control Channelize via MIDI PC either.

I asked the obvious LLM to write an LV2 plugin that converts PC to CC, but the result just segfaults the plugin host (no surprise here).

Now time's up for today and I didn't play a single proper note of music.

Unfortunately, the next concert with the project I'd like to use DecentSampler for is a pay-to-play concert, and it might turn out well… meaning 0€ for the band, or in the worst case the concert might cost the band as much as a used Macbook M1 to play the concert.

I recently found out that playing #DecentSampler via a #Roland #GK3b MIDI bass pickup feels inherently cool to me, but probably in the audience nobody understands it or gives a shit about it. So why fight the 30msec tracking latency when I can just use a keyboard?

It turns out however that #Carla as a plugin host together with Decent Sampler does not work like a #MidiExpander used to work in the old days. In fact, most hosts and plugins don't.

There is no direct possibility to store presets associated with MIDI program numbers. I think there should be in the settings dialog of each plugin in Carla, but for the DecentSampler #VST3, there's nothing to activate.

@falktx – how is this meant to be used?

I wouldn't even need Program Change that much, it's just… I can't store presets in DecentSampler at all, since it relies 100% on the #plugin #host for managing this. So changes to sample sets like reverb settings are not persistent…

I also like #DecentSampler which I can play via MIDI.

So I bought Descent for #IOS, Decent Sampler is free, and from previous experiments I have this CME WIDI Thru6 BT, a Bluetooth MIDI interface for IOS and others. There's a Focusrite 2i2 audio interface floating around… so fine?

Well, no. My iPad is an older model using #AppleLightning as a connector and this does not provide enough power. So the battery drains even when connected to the strongest power supply. This cannot be solved, except by buying a newer iPad.

I cannot feed my bass mono into Descent, since it always takes both interface channels as stereo. Descent support suggest buying the AUM plugin host for IOS.

All of a sudden, doing this on a Laptop with Linux and Carla seems so much simpler to me.
