TL;DR: Very few people advocating #Māori Data Sovereignty are walking the talk. It's oh so hard and expensive to do the right thing and oh so cheap and easy to use those shiny #datafarm alternatives.
Tautoko Dr Karaitiana Taiuru For This Important but depressing research.

I just published a new #Disintermedia blog piece;
https://disintermedia.net.nz/hey-activists-dont-be-a-mailchump
It's another old favourite from the original CoActivate version of the blog, encouraging activists and other community groups to stay in control of our mailing lists, instead of outsourcing it to for-profit companies that may well use it to #DataFarm our members and supporters.

@Salty
> Presumably something like thisThat's a good metaphor for DataFarming; any revenue model for online services that involves getting large number of people onto a platform, gathering data about them, and selling it (or the use of it) to third-parties. Any online platform funded by ads is probably a #DataFarm.
-
Chains is yet another #DataFarm:
"Meta and Threads collect a lot of data. Including but not limited to health and fitness, financial info, contact info, purchases, location and identifiers. While Threads does not currently show ads or sponsored posts, the company says ads will be how it monetizes the site. For marketers and advertisers, joining Threads seems obvious when considering the mass data collection and analysis currently being done by Meta."

"Committee hearings that would normally be open to the public will continue to be accessible via the Parliament website and committee Facebook pages."
https://www.parliament.nz/en/get-involved/features/update-on-public-access-to-new-zealand-parliament/Why is the NZ government giving gratis promotion, on it's own website, to a corporate-owned #datafarm?
-
#MeWe is just centralized, proprietary #Hubzilla. Why is that attractive to anyone looking for replacements for the #datafarm platforms? A more user-friendly UI I guess?

There need to be clear rules around the placing of political ads online, especially around election times. Ads on #datafarm platforms etc that are funded by a political party need to be clearly labeled as such, and a copy needs to be publicly available, either on their own website, or an official channel on another platform. Ads designed to discourage supporters of political opponents from turning up to vote are anti-democratic, and if not banned entirely, must at least be publicly audited.
-
A core assumption of #democracy is that governments and "experts" can be wrong, that laws and policies sometimes need to be overturned. Discovering when that's the case absolutely depends on the ability of fringe groups to express and campaign on dissenting views, all of which will seem abhorrent and obviously wrong to *someone*. Governments forcing monopolistic #datafarm platforms to censor fringe views is a threat to an emerging global democracy. We must prevent this, not applaud it.
-
But some people are arguing that commons projects ought to be paying people "market rates" and I'm not sure that's equitable or sustainable either. Do we really want to emulate thd unjust distribution of the wage and salary budget in #datafarm corporations? I'd argue that a big chunk of the generous salaries they pay to developers is hush money, so they don't ask any awkward ethical questions about how their work affects people's lives, or refuse to develop abusive or violent technology.

Looks like the tax-free party the transnational #DataFarm corporations have been enjoying for the last decade or two might finally be coming to an end, with the #OECD and member governments moving towards a #DST (Digital Services Tax):

#Minds CEO #BillOttman says he's been invited to the White House "social media summit". I web search that and find numerous corporate news articles that read like #DataFarm corporation press releases, alleging it's a far-right conservative circle jerk. Yes, Minds does have some rabid right-wingers using its platform (as does the fediverse), but it's also been a home for radical left outlets like #ActOut who have been marginalized by the #DataFarms. What to make of this?
#hypernormalization -
@jackyan With Goggle this sort of thing can happen if you're not logged into an account with them, and/or blocking #Javascript they're trying to #DataFarm you with.
-
#ShowerThought corporate #DataFarms that promote themselves as #SocialMedia are #P2P (Peer-to-Peer) from a user perspective, but not from a technical perspective. Users can connect and communicate directly, but not without the #DataFarm as an intermediary in the background. #BitTorrent is #P2P from a technical perspective, but not from a user perspective. There's never direct one-to-one contact between any two users). messaging apps like #Jami and #Briar are #P2P in both ways.

Gotta love a visual #Python pun (apologies for #DataFarm link I can't see a link to an original source):

CW: Amazon Overwork Capitalist Hellscape
@silverspookgames I reckon! The question is, how to develop it? My #IWW history is pretty limited, but my understanding is that it works as a solidarity federation made up of smaller unions and/or autonomous local branches. So I guess the first step would be to make contact with all the existing groups unionizing workers in #DataFarm companies, and come up with strategies for mutual supports and filling the gaps where workers don't have a union yet.
-
CW: Amazon Overwork Capitalist Hellscape
@silverspookgames imagine an #IWW style union that covered all the workers in the #DataFarming industry, from warehouse workers, to software engineers, to "self-employed" gig app workers, to cleaning staff, across all the #DataFarm companies, across all the countries they operate in.

@lordbowlich I really enjoy the #fediverse but because most of its software is modelled on the #DataFarm platforms (text-heavy social media interaction with strangers), I think it's at risk of causing similar problems. I'd really like to see federated network efforts focusing on building tools for private social networks, and especially voice conversations, and building community using them.
@Wolf480pl @RandomDamage -
@cowan I haven't studied this in detail, but here are some facts:
1) Reddit has ads. Ads = tracking and data collection.
2) Reddit used to release their server code under a #FreeCode license. Not anymore. I suspect because of the move to adsIf you really want to know, read the fine print of the Reddit ToS, Privacy Policy etc. I tend to assume that any internet platform that's heavily VC-funded or owned by corporate shareholders is a #DataFarm unless there's a good reason to think otherwise.
-
@kaniini that would involve proving intent to violate privacy though, or at least gross negligence in failing to prevent violation. A law that fined anyone who got pwned, resulting in privacy violation, would put pretty much everyone out of business (including not-fot-profits), except the #datafarm corporations that can afford armies of lawyers, and get away with not paying fines.

@LWFlouisa
> Also, why discord, and not matrix? It seems like paying to be spied on to me.No idea, I've never tried #Discord, but I know dedicated gamers who hangs out there a lot. I'd guess that as in most cases of #DataFarm vs. #FreeNetworkService, it's a case of the datafarm having a more pleasing #UX.
-
@djsumdog sounds like a good plot for a thriller movie, with plenty of twists and turns ;) Even if it's true though, it doesn't change what we know about the #5Eyes agencies and their cozy relationships with the #datafarm companies. People are arguing over whether the datafarms are subverting states or vice-versa. It's like arguing which cheek is in charge of someone's face.
-
@jeremiah take the #NetNeutrality debate for example. This is at least partly a battle between cable and server corporations about who gets what share of the spoils of the #DataFarm economy. The server corporations, normally our opponents in battles over #SoftwareFreedom, are in favour of net neutrality (it serves their business model better), so they give groups like the EFF some funding so they can campaign on it more effectively.

It looks like the acquisition of #FlickR by #SmugMug might actually be a case where users are liberated from a #DataFarm by an acquisition, rather than sold to one. They're getting rid of the compulsory Yahoo login, and:
> "Giving away vast amounts of storage creates data that can be sold to advertisers, with the inevitable result being that advertisers’ interests are prioritized over yours. Reducing the free storage offering ensures that we run Flickr on subscriptions":

@danyspin97 @TheOuterLinux
> In the end #Matrix still seems the most promising one to me, due to the presence of both a public community and a IM.#Matrix is client/server, so quite a different beast from #Tox / #Ring, which are serverless. Matrix seems like a good candidate for replacing both #IRC and #Slack, given that it's federated by default (unlike IRC which needs a bunch of extra stuff to support federation), and it's an open protocol (unlike Slack which is a #DataFarm).

CW: another marketing and data aggregation firm gets hacked...
@charlyblack "good tech" is a pretty broad brief. I was responding specifically to #datafarm corporations being a) tempting targets because they aggregate loads of data they don't need to run their service and store it when they don't need to, and b) easy to hack because of security-by-obscurity approaches. #OpenSource alone doesn't fix that, but I'm saying #SoftwareFreedom, in the broadest sense of the term, mandates fixing it.

The rumours are true, the #Borg have arrived on planet #GitHub to assimilate all the stock it has penned up in its #datafarm
