  1. ABC News is probably the only news organisation in Australia that can and does dedicate resources to doing this kind of regional reporting (which is why its continued funding is so important), but they really need to cut back on adding strong vignettes to photos in articles about natural disasters to try to make them more “dramatic”. Particularly the photos in the second half of this article are a bit much…

  2. Collective sighs of relief as #CycloneAlfred has now become ex-Cyclone Alfred. It was a stressful last couple of days, to say the least. Surprisingly, we didn't lose our power, and didn't experience much strong wind - probably due to being nestled in a wooded valley. A few roof leaks, but the studio is dry, thankfully. The expected winds have turned into actual rain now, though. Here's hoping that #Lismore doesn't cop all the runoff from the hills, as is so often the case.

  3. [00:53] Cyclone downgraded to tropical low as it nears Australia

Cyclone Alfred weakened into a tropical low as it neared the rain and wind-lashed eastern coast of Australia where hundreds of thousands of properties were without power.

  4. CW: Swearing about idiots.

Regarding Cyclone Alfred — and any other natural disaster: if you simply 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙩 put yourself in danger in order to get a first-hand view of the unfolding drama, FFS leave your kids and pets at home!

Risk your own life? Sure, whatever. Maybe your dependents won't miss you. But risking the lives of children or animals so that you can get a momentary thrill is behaviour that lies far beyond cuntish.

Grow up, stop thinking of that awesome selfie or viral video, and protect those who rely on you to be sensible in the face of danger.

  5. 'E-scooters in Brisbane were gathered in an empty lot in Perry Lane in Spring Hill ahead of the cyclone. Unfortunately, a car was parked there as well. The car had been parked in the spot for two days until Lime and Neuron moved their e-scooters to the location, according to the person who filmed the video. The man was then forced to painstakingly rearrange the e-scooters to free his car' theguardian.com/australia-news #cyclone #escooters #cyclonealfred #cyclonealfie

  12. The Bureau of Meorology just updated it's tracking forecast. The cyclone has swung west as predicted.
The landfall prediction changed from directly over our house, to a few of kilometres to the south.

Shout out to the tireless workers at the local Morton Bay Regional Council depot, working to supply sand and bags for us to fill. Many thousands of tonnes of sand has gone through this one depot.

After the 2022 heavy rains, the owner arranged the drain and a sump with a pump out to the street. Lets hope the back pressure from the 1 to 2 metre gutter flow on the road does not damage the pump, like the last heavy rains.

  16. Dear Brisbanites and S.E. Queenslanders. You are not allowed to complain about panic buyers if you…

    • Shopped a day or two earlier because you heard about shortages,
    • Grabbed one or two extra “just in case”,
    • Switched brands when you’d normally have gone without,
    • Acted differently to how you would in your normal every day shopping.

…if you did, guess what? You’re “panic buying” too. You’re just salty because you missed out.

Blame yourself (or maybe the retailers). Calling everyone else an idiot when you acted too late, nope - that’s on you.

And, let’s be honest, you’re not going to starve. You’ll be uncomfortable for a few days.

Acting surprised and exasperated when you arrived but the shelves were empty. Realise, thousands of other more prepared people simply shifted their shopping by a few days, or bought an extra loaf of bread - this hardly constitutes panic.

But, you say “when I arrived the shelves were bare and people had 6kg of ham in their trolly - who can eat 6kg of ham?”. Fair, but consider a) you don’t know their circumstance, maybe they like ham, and b) It’s not their fault if it’s not your fault - they weren’t acting in time either. Their hand was forced, they had to act - rationally - given the circumstance. Grab yourself 6kg of olives and enjoy.

The only thing that could have changed your outcome is you acting sooner, or having suppliers/shops be more responsive and proactive. Expecting the behaviour of others to change to suit you is just nonsense.

We all know how this works. Remember the last toilet paper crisis? If you’re caught short again, maybe it’s not everyone else who’s the idiot! Cyclone Alfred affecting Brisbane/SEQ was looking possible since the weekend, so you can’t claim ignorance.

I know why you’re angry, you missed out. I understand and it sucks. But stop squarking about it. Try again tomorrow.

(Caveats: Not talking about hoarding beyond personal use, or profiteering. Also, I feel genuinely for those who couldn’t act earlier due to financial or other circumstances - if you’re in north-western Brisbane and this is you, message me directly I don’t know what I can do, but if I can I’ll help).

  17. I was just at Coles collecting some essentials for a possible power outage (pretty likely on our street - happens even in moderate storms).

It was fun watching everyone and listening to the conversations about “panic buying” (I hate the term, everyone I saw was buying reasonable “extra” amounts for an uncertain week!).

What was funny, was hearing all these thoughtful, reasonable prepared people (I mean that sincerely), complaining about how everyone else was panic buying. #brisbane #CycloneAlfred #queensland #panicbuying
