  1. 10 years ago, 18-year old Josh Park-Fing died at his forced labour #WorkfortheDole site in #Toowoomba.
Despite a court finding that Josh's Work for the Dole site did not meet basic safety standards, neither the government nor his for-profit privately owned employment service provider #NEATO were held accountable.
Josh's family weren't even provided normal workers compensation as Josh was technically not an 'employee'.

  4. Watched #4corners today. They interviewed #liberal members in #Toowoomba, city of my birth. I am, more than ever, ready to proclaim the Toowoomba Bypass as the greatest and most necessary infrastucture project ever.

  5. We're about to set off for another #EmergencyCommsExercise at #SouthbrookQld for the #Toowoomba Endurance Horse Riders' Association Hip Pocket Challenge.

This _was_ to take place in March, however #CycloneAlfred was the final word on that… so it got postponed until now. Southbrook is a little south-west of Toowoomba on the high plains… very open to the wind and quite high in altitude. Consequently, I'm grabbing all the warm gear I can lay my hands on. This morning Toowomba region had a overnight minimum of -0.1°C. Sunday is predicted to get down to 5°C (a little warmer).

It'll also be the first event I try out the checkpoint reporter program I released a couple of weeks ago. I've of course packed clipboards and paper forms, so if things go pear shaped with the computing, we have the paperwork to back it up.

There are four rides taking place. Tomorrow afternoon there's a 20km introductory ride: I understand WICEN's not involved in that one officially, but we'll probably use it as a trial run of the software.

Sunday morning we have an 80km, 40km and 20km ride to support.

  7. @NZedAUS the only positive was showing the country what a brain dead cult member looks like. He can only rabbit slogans that have been signed off by the mining mates and corporate donors. Whenever he goes off script he exposes his racism and misogyny and they have to hide him in a cupboard until everyone forgets about him.

  8. I’m looking for ideas for a social group outing in #Brisbane or #Toowoomba region in spring for a group of international colleagues. Its been a good 14+ years since I’ve lived in QLD, so I'm not sure what's good to do...

Any thoughts are much appreciated, thanks.

  9. Until I was 12, I grew up on the escarpment of the Great Dividing Range in Australia in Toowoomba (Prince Henry Drive). At this particular point, it rises between 700 and 900 meters above sea level, on its run down the entire east coast of Australia. Here cloud masses rush in from the coast, hit the range and drop their water down the gullies and ravines, where pockets of rainforest cling and mists and fog would often change the world into a soft blind white. Through the entire continent, it divides and separates populations, landscapes, and climates. Historically, it has provided challenges to the colonial process while protecting the Indigenous people. Its liminality is almost spiritual.

  10. The music scene in #Toowoomba in the late 1980s and early 90s was amazing. Dedicated people like Bailey Hilliard (anyone remember The Rocktapus at The National?), Peter and Inge Fenton (licensees of The Gladstone Hotel) and Dylan Hughes (who booked for The Courthouse) were driving so much of the scene. There were a lot of local bands plus touring bands had a choice of venues. Jimmy Aspromogos had the Powerhouse and Rumours where many national and international acts played. The Refec out at the uni was buzzing too. I saw Madness and Hoodoo Gurus there in the mid-80s along with many more. No poker machines in those days so pubs chose to develop live music as it made money. As my old friend Ian says in the video below, The Glad was a constant with bands and events. There was a real community around it. Later on The Lake opened where I remember seeing Painters and Dockers and The Wreckery among many others. Sad that this isn't an option for young people today.
