In December 1982, Crass squatted the empty Rainbow Theatre in Finsbury Park. The plan was to stage a 24-hour free concert.

This followed a frosty reaction from club owners regarding Crass playing in the capital after their anti-Falklands single, How Does It Feel?, fuelled controversy in both the press and Parliament.

Security and police had other ideas, however, and quickly and forcefully removed the squatting party. Down but not out, they recouped their losses and, within no time at all, secured another building: the Zig Zag Club on Westbourne Road.

„This is the Liège self-organized Social Center (Centre Social Autogéré in French), a large, occupied building in the heart of Liège, which has been buzzing with positive energy for the past month. It’s a former retirement home (so there are about fifty rooms, a ground floor with a large hall and a big kitchen... and we even have a lovely landscaped courtyard), now taken over by people of all ages eager to reclaim the city and wrest it from the hands of the wicked, to bring life back where others speculate on emptiness.“

Squatting is a vastly underutilised strategy in Aotearoa. Especially given that so much of our built environment sits empty, even in cities with chronic and highly visible housing shortages. But being found in a squatted building comes with legal risks, that some of us are in a better position to handle than others.
