What does it mean to do digital history?
New epistemic horizons, new epistemic responsibilities!
At least that’s what we say in the (27p long) introduction to our Ambix special issue on computational approaches - that I think could also be a helpful read for those new to the topic 🤔
What do you think? Let me know!https://doi.org/10.1080/00026980.2026.2709974

Again, me with the somewhat provocative takes 😳😎😇
Does a digital or computational history of science and knowledge even exist as a field? 🤔

How to read thousands of newspaper articles?
Three researchers at Herder-Institut Marburg used #TopicModeling to analyse over 7,000 articles in Latvian diaspora newspapers. They uncovered a remarkable archive of how displaced communities maintained identity across decades and continents - and found that topic modeling is a serendipitous technology...

To be honest, I was a bit stressed about potential last-minute issues, but in the end, yesterday’s workshop on “Structure and Interpretation: Towards Computational Historiographical Modeling” went smoothly.
Thanks again to our keynote speaker Manfred Thaller and our invited speakers: @sdevaleriola, @feichtimo, @resonanzfilter, Sébastien Poublanc, and @ChristianWachter.

And the final input for today is by @sdevaleriola on “The Question of Proof in History.”
-
We continue after the lunch break with a statement by @resonanzfilter on “Ideologies of Knowledge Work: Cold War Computing in the GDR.”
-
The first input statement of the second round is by @ChristianWachter: “Structuring Data is an Interpretative Act.”
-
The second input statement is by Sébastien Poublanc: “Characterizing Historical Data to Produce True ‘Historian's Data’.”
-
The first input statement for the world café part of our workshop is by @feichtimo: “DARK MATTER IN DATABASES: towards ‘negative hermeneutics’?”
-
We’re kicking off our workshop on Structure and Interpretation with a keynote by Manfred Thaller: “Extracting and Communicating Historical Knowledge via ‘Graphs.’ Pipedreams of a Disbeliever in Hermeneutics.”

Tomorrow I'm giving a keynote at the text2story workshop in Delft. "Multilingual Knowledge Extraction from Fiction" Main takeaway: LLMs are more accurate than semantic parsing. But only with human annotated ground knowledge for dynamic few-shots prompts #DigitalHumanities #ComputationalHumanities
