How to read thousands of newspaper articles?
Three researchers at Herder-Institut Marburg used #TopicModeling to analyse over 7,000 articles in Latvian diaspora newspapers. They uncovered a remarkable archive of how displaced communities maintained identity across decades and continents - and found that topic modeling is a serendipitous technology...

Bitte hier entlang => https://doi.org/10.11588/fr.2023.1.107944

In my digital history class this semester, we were originally going to do some topic modeling work with MALLET but students struggled to get it installed.
So we pivoted and a few weeks later, used #Voyant to do the modeling, then Datawrapper to play with visualization.
Was a real success, and bringing #Datawrapper into the mix really helped compensate for Voyant's limitations in terms of visualization. The students really enjoyed trying different visualizations out, even if they were a bust, and trying to make sense of what they were seeing.
Planning to type up some notes as a more formal lesson plan. If I ever get a website up and running again, I'll share it there (someday).

#DigitalHumanities folks -
is there a cloud-based environment for working with #MALLET for #TopicModeling?
something like a binder (https://mybinder.org/) set up?

First up in our session on "Crossing Borders, Building Meaning: Exploring the Dynamics of Knowledge Transmission and Trust in Digital Humanities" at #DH2024: Mengyuan Zhou speaking about "Building Bridges or Walls? Topic Modeling for Analyzing Trust in Indirect Literary Translation".
The author used zero-shot BERTopic Modeling with pre-defined topic labels.

@cnDuKeli Everyone doing topic modeling should read and learn from this book. Evaluating our key methods is so important and there are some really good insights into topic modeling in there. I learned a lot from it!

Reading through the next #DataSittersClub draft on #topicmodeling with the delightful @xandaschofield , and I think you all are going to be in for a real Thanksgiving treat. This is the piece that I wish I'd read as a first encounter with topic models.

hackathon at work yesterday! we're trying a bunch of approaches at topic models, and I went for SeededLDA. I found an R package for it https://koheiw.github.io/seededlda/articles/pkgdown/seeded.html
and managed to actually get some topics out of it and get single labels for documents. (I should be able to get a ranked list of best topic matches, but instead it gives the top one. still it's a start!) Extra impressive because I do not remember #RStats

www.PsychTopics.org, our #ShinyApp for research trends in #psychology from the German-speaking countries, now features term highlighting in the topic evolution section. This way, you can easily track how the content of topics changes over time.

If you are interested in how to apply #TopicModeling to continuously growing corpora, have a look at this talk by @rieger he gave last year in our lecture series:
https://zpid.cloud.panopto.eu/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=03addb74-2f86-4ed0-b877-af9c00a2959d
He shows the advantages of modeling growing text corpora using RollingLDA and presents some example applications, e.g., the uncertainty perception and inflation perception indicators, PsychTopics as well as various change detection and monitoring scenarios.

@xandaschofield student collaborator got a genuine #DataSittersClub meeting experience as we meandered from #TopicModeling to the challenges of interdisciplinary work to the fact that you're kidding yourself if you think #academia is mostly you and your code or books or archives-- the whole thing is people, with all the mess that comes with it. I'm super excited about this book, though, I've already learned a ton. #DigitalHumanities
