  2. Tour de France – stage 2 2026

It’s a stream of consciousness, not a recap.

Apologies to all the people who arrived at this blog yesterday thinking they were going to get a match report of the #TdF stage. That’s not my vibe. I can barely hold two or three of the riders’ names in my head at any one time, and I’m certainly too lazy to check spellings.

I tuned in for the second stage, which was much more the thing. A proper peloton-and-breakaway stage, with less repetition of the touristic helicopter shots. Some spectacular views, but Spain leaves me cold, really. Also, they seemed to be mainly riding on the equivalent of trunk roads and dual carriageways. Long and straight and a bit boring.

I’ve never seen the attraction of Spain. Too hot, too dry, too Franco. I saw some architecture that looked grimly fascist, and a couple of pristine monasteries. I have to say, the monastic life does appeal. Not the praying, or the getting up in the middle of the night to pray, but the quiet contemplation and the sheet beauty of it. I wouldn’t be keen on the gardening, but I do love a cloister.

It looked hot, yesterday’s stage. There was lots of ice being pushed down backs, and lots of water bottle contents poured over heads. Some of the helmets look like they offer better ventilation than others. I bought a new helmet the other day but haven’t been out with it yet, because my ebike’s axle is borked and the local bike shop hasn’t taken delivery of the replacement. It’s very frustrating. I’ve probably missed out on four bike rides since the end of the heatwave.

I saw one rider toss his empty bidon away and it arced through the air and was caught by a spectator without hitting the ground. A beautiful moment.

I only went to Spain twice, really. The first time was in 1983, when we took the overnight ferry to Santander and headed off to cross the border into France. But we spent one night in Spain, on a hot and dry campsite where the ground was so hard that most of the tent pegs bent. And, to paraphrase The Rutles, well, it was the toilets.

I’ve never seen such horror. What do you call them? Alaturka. Turkish-style squat toilets, and not terribly clean. It was a bad start to the trip. I was constipated for six days.

The other strong memory of that first couple of days in Spain was driving through static traffic in Pamplona, zooming past all the cars on the motorcycle. There was barely enough of a gap. There were panniers on the back of the bike, and attached to the handle of the panniers, the tin mugs that couldn’t quite fit in any of the bags. And we were bonking these tin mugs against the paintwork of the cars as we were zipping down the street. Clack-clack-clack-clack. Horns blowing, fists shaking.

Knocked some of the enamel off the bottom of the mugs. So that was the rest of the holiday. Bent tent pegs and damaged mugs. It was a memorable trip. The tachenlampen incident. Falling off in Gaillac. The green algal bloom in lakes warmed by nuclear fire.

The second time was the occasion we flew into Barcelona airport and then drive up to our holiday rental in the Languedoc. It was all right on the way there. But on the way back to the airport, the motorway was closed, and we got lost in Barcelona. The stress.

And that’s where the stage finished, Barcelona. Some spectacular views across the city, and that Gaudi cathedral that looks like a giant dog turd. It’s Spain’s reminder to me of those Turkish toilets.

(Eigentlich Bundesweit). Der Download des shapes gibts nicht mehr. Kann man nur noch "bestellen" in 4km² Quantitäten.

Also einfach WFS Download - der ist kastriert kaputt.

    ES NERVT!

Napęd to Shimano GRX 1x12 z kasetą 10-51.
