Amusing misCATegorization.
This post showed up on my Misskey (Iceshrimp) Antenna for Robotic Combat, which means one of the configured keywords - that I associated with #combatrobotics - had to appear.
I couldn't figure it out by glancing so I did grep-in-a-loop and found the culprit was MRCA. As in MRCAtrickSwayze. -
The March competition from #NHRL inspired me to crunch numbers.
It's not much, but it's a thing. Maybe more thing come later.

The way the announcers & production are being done is more appropriate and, IMO, 100x better than what the Russians did last week ( #BitvaRobotov ).

Telling an interpreter to do it live, without seemingly giving her a background primer on how #CombatRobotics works first, is honestly kind of crazy.
But I'm glad they did it. The alternative was zero English. And that would've been a little harder to understand - there are things I would've missed for sure.
It also would've been cool if the production team took a little time to become aware of what combat robotics is and why people watch also, but, you know, government work and all that.

Anyone aware of "Battle of Robots" at "Games of the Future" coming up in a week? What is the ruleset, exactly? Single-elim bracket?
It's weird for an event with the largest 1st-place cash prize ever to have so few details available. And when I tried to watch what I could find of their one previous event, I was more confused than anything.

Spicy Donut has a little plastic piece under the spinner motor because I needed it to be slightly higher.
I had trouble getting it off the motor. I did not remember gluing it on, because that would be weird and unnecessary since there are screws going through it.
Nope, turns out the motor just gets hot enough to melt ABS. Neat.

Smashy robot time today was fun! I didn't win any of the main bracket battles but Flippin' Heck (my 1lb) did win one of the rumbles near the end despite spending most of it doing upside down robot break dancing,.
Spicy Donut, frustratingly, did not spin up the first time because one of my motor wires disconnected between testing and my first match (guessing it was just barely in). I also ran it in a rumble and it spun up then but I got swarmed before doing much damage.
I need to get out of the habit of using small wheels. I do it because they're easy to protect, but they are also prone to not touching the floor if I drive over a piece of debris.

It didn't come with sticks on the analog sticks?? But it otherwise works.

I think in general there might be too much uncertainty packed into the numbers. Most matches in general are not roughly 50-50. The only one that surprises me directionally is Free Shipping over Deathroll... I think I'd expect it to be more likely to go the other way.

Well, I didn't see that coming.
My boss has asked me to write something about #CombatRobotics for work. A fluff/color piece, essentiallly. Planning to do a series with contributions from various employees about their interests to give outsiders a peek into our corporate culture.
I'm really not sure how this is going to go. -
Here's a wedge-shaped lifter. Obviously it would be good to print the final version in more of a cheese color, haha.
Anyway, this features proportional control and more full-fledged electronics. Power from the 9v battery goes directly to the 2 speed controllers (green), which give you proportional drive control. Power is also routed through the voltage regulator (yellow) to give lower voltage to the receiver (blue) and the servo (purple).
It's a work in progress!

Here's the transmitter along with that receiver board from the last image. On the right hand side is a higher-voltage version of the receiver I didn't wind up using.
This tx/rx combo does everything and can be bought very inexpensively - around $20 if you buy direct from China. The downside is that there's no proportional control. The motors are simply off or full speed, no in between.
I'm working on another cheap bot (tho not quite as cheap) without that problem.
