  1. My #antweight #battlebot ended up in the middle of the ranking at the Hack&Make Nuremberg. I learned a lot and meet many cool people. My next bot will be more competitive but still unweaponized.

  2. Almost complete. Think we need to shave some grams to make weight. We would like to add back the two fixed forks though.

  3. Well, the #antweight #battlebot can self right, so that’s a win.

We’re just over weight, so might need to skimp on some armor, or quickly redesign the side armor to save weight.

No time to really test the thing, but I don’t think we’ll be embarrassed in our first fight this Saturday in Rocklin

  4. 13yo ’s flipper bot is powered and wired.

He wanted to put everything with screw terminals so we can swap parts out if we need.

The two main problems we have are:

    1) The motors are working weird. Essentially everything rotated 90 degrees. (Eg right is forward). This is most likely a configuration issue with the controller or receiver. We need to read the instructions.

    2) He cut the wires without measuring them carefully, so they’re all a bit short. We can probably get them all jammed in there, except for one drive motor. We can either make the chassis a bit higher, or splice the wire and make it longer. (I think we should just splice it.)

We still have about 86 grams to reach the weight limit, and we still need some side armor.

    We should be fine.

  5. More kids attending the catbot class these days in addition to adults. The soldering can be a little difficult for them, but they really enjoy the final stages of the process.

The faces of kids and grownups alike light up when they realize they're about to have a fully functioning rc bot they built themselves. It's very rewarding!

  6. Inside the catbot, the electronics are very simple. This receiver board also serves as the power distribution board and basically the only electronics.

The 9v battery powers the board, which then sends power to the 2 lifter motors and the 2 drive motors based on the signal received from the cheapo radio transmitter. That's it.

  7. Video of Henry's adventures

I would've "renoted" that, but iooks like that PeerTube instance isn't federating easily? I don't see a post corresponding to that video.

  8. This catbot is a kitbot for the local makerspace. Modified a thingiverse design to work for this purpose and I'm pretty pleased with the result!

  9. Part of the reason we decided to do the Viper kit when we did is because there's an annual competition coming up that's closer to us than any other competition, by quite a bit.

The posting I saw had no contact info other than an email address. The first couple emails I had sent (months in advance) got no response. I sent an email a few weeks in advance trying to register (at this point we had the kit in-hand), and got a response that the registration deadline (not mentioned in the posting) had passed and they had hit capacity anyhow.

    Boo.

So we could either wait until September for DragonCon, or drive really, really far to go to something a bit sooner. Well, we're registered and planning to go to our first competition next weekend. It's road trip time!

    Wish us luck.

  10. My AntWeight combat robot (named "Jeff") is getting a downsized weapon motor + ESC to stay under the 1lb (US #AntWeight) limit. The original set was 100g, and the (tiny!!!) replacement, which just arrived, weighs only 20g. I'm curious to see how much damage it can do. I hope to spend time this weekend designing a (drum roller) weapon prototype and building a containment box where I'll be able to safely observe Jeff wreaking havoc. Goal: maximum havoc!

  11. Updated 150g bot is up and running. Features slower, higher torque motors and a bearing assembly supporting the weapon motor (hopefully protecting it from impacts).

  12. Chonk against Hellfire. After beating Chonk twice in this tournament and taking first place, Hellfire is now the top-ranked 1lb bot in the USA.

  13. Spinning up the weapon motor on the tail (1404 brushless motor). Photo of the weapon to follow, but it needs to be tested safely.
