¿Sabían que las reglas oficiales de la competencia de combate robótico BattleBots prohibieron de forma estricta el uso de redes de enredo tras un polémico e inesperado incidente ocurrido en el año 2015?
Durante la temporada de ese año, el equipo del robot llamado Complete Control se enfrentó a la máquina Ghost Raptor, la cual destacaba por tener un potente disco giratorio horizontal muy destructivo. Para anular este ataque, los creadores de Complete Control colocaron secretamente una red de pesca oculta dentro de una caja de cartón decorada como un paquete de regalo en la arena de combate. Al iniciar la batalla, Ghost Raptor arremetió de forma directa contra el objeto, lo que provocó que las fibras de la red se enredaran de inmediato en su eje motor, deteniendo por completo su arma principal. Aunque el reglamento general ya prohibía los dispositivos de sabotaje genéricos, las lagunas normativas de esa edición obligaron a los jueces a detener la pelea, ordenar la repetición del combate sin el uso de la red y reescribir las cláusulas legales posteriores para especificar que las cuerdas, telas, pegamentos y líneas de pesca quedaban totalmente vetados en el torneo.

I really enjoyed the live audience voting in the #RobotRampage World Cup. I always play that game at home anyhow - trying to guess what's going to happen before it does is a really good prompt to thinking more deeply about what you're watching. And if you've followed me for a while you've seen me put out polls on this sort of thing.
So, yes, I'm very glad to see #BattleBots will be doing something similar with their new show. They won't be live, so it's a little different, because some small minority of the votes know for a fact who wins, but still... it's a nice gesture.
#NHRL does live shows, and are generally quite good at being online. I wonder if they've experimented with this sort of thing as a live-audience engagement thing before? -

¿Sabían que las competencias modernas de combate de robots tienen su origen en la frustración de un diseñador de efectos visuales de Lucasfilm por un juguete que no funcionaba?
Marc Thorpe, tras intentar sin éxito reparar un tanque a control remoto, conceptualizó la idea de un torneo donde las máquinas pudieran destruirse legalmente. El primer encuentro oficial tuvo lugar el 20 de agosto de 1994 en el Fort Mason Center de San Francisco, bajo el nombre original de Robot Wars (marca que Thorpe creó antes de que surgiera la serie británica y el posterior BattleBots).
Aquel evento inaugural contó con la participación de solo 16 robots y atrajo a una audiencia de mil personas. Entre los competidores pioneros se encontraban figuras que más tarde destacarían en otras áreas, como Caleb Chung (creador del juguete Furby) y Will Wright (creador del videojuego The Sims). Fue tras una disputa legal por los derechos de la marca "Robot Wars" que otros competidores del evento original, como Trey Roski y Greg Munson, decidieron fundar BattleBots en 1999, llevando el deporte a la televisión masiva y consolidando la estructura técnica de las arenas de combate que conocemos hoy.

Honestly, I prefer #NHRL primarily because they're producing more new, regularly-scheduled, high-quality competition shows in places I can easily watch.
If #BattleBots went back to a championship every year plus FaceOffs or whatever... frankly I'd just watch both. I'm not so strapped for screen time that I have pick one or the other. -

One of my New Year's resolutions was to make weight as a BattleBot by the end of the year. This is a pretty modest goal, which would bring my BMI from 30.3 to 28.9 (or lower). But it used to be that when I thought a casual observer of the videos didn't appreciate the scale of things I could point out: "Those machines weigh more than I do." which would often shock people because I'm a rather large person... and it's kinda sad that I can't say that anymore.
It's pretty early in the year so whether I appear to be on-track to reach teh goal depends on what time of day I weigh myself.

The way the announcers & production are being done is more appropriate and, IMO, 100x better than what the Russians did last week ( #BitvaRobotov ).

It's weird for an event with the largest 1st-place cash prize ever to have so few details available. And when I tried to watch what I could find of their one previous event, I was more confused than anything.
