I really enjoyed the live audience voting in the #RobotRampage World Cup. I always play that game at home anyhow - trying to guess what's going to happen before it does is a really good prompt to thinking more deeply about what you're watching. And if you've followed me for a while you've seen me put out polls on this sort of thing.

So, yes, I'm very glad to see #BattleBots will be doing something similar with their new show. They won't be live, so it's a little different, because some small minority of the votes know for a fact who wins, but still... it's a nice gesture.

#NHRL does live shows, and are generally quite good at being online. I wonder if they've experimented with this sort of thing as a live-audience engagement thing before?

Honestly, I prefer #NHRL primarily because they're producing more new, regularly-scheduled, high-quality competition shows in places I can easily watch.

If #BattleBots went back to a championship every year plus FaceOffs or whatever... frankly I'd just watch both. I'm not so strapped for screen time that I have pick one or the other.

One of my New Year's resolutions was to make weight as a BattleBot by the end of the year. This is a pretty modest goal, which would bring my BMI from 30.3 to 28.9 (or lower). But it used to be that when I thought a casual observer of the videos didn't appreciate the scale of things I could point out: "Those machines weigh more than I do." which would often shock people because I'm a rather large person... and it's kinda sad that I can't say that anymore.

It's pretty early in the year so whether I appear to be on-track to reach teh goal depends on what time of day I weigh myself.

Anyone aware of "Battle of Robots" at "Games of the Future" coming up in a week? What is the ruleset, exactly? Single-elim bracket?

It's weird for an event with the largest 1st-place cash prize ever to have so few details available. And when I tried to watch what I could find of their one previous event, I was more confused than anything.

13yo ’s flipper bot is powered and wired.

He wanted to put everything with screw terminals so we can swap parts out if we need.

The two main problems we have are:

1) The motors are working weird. Essentially everything rotated 90 degrees. (Eg right is forward). This is most likely a configuration issue with the controller or receiver. We need to read the instructions.

2) He cut the wires without measuring them carefully, so they’re all a bit short. We can probably get them all jammed in there, except for one drive motor. We can either make the chassis a bit higher, or splice the wire and make it longer. (I think we should just splice it.)

We still have about 86 grams to reach the weight limit, and we still need some side armor.

We should be fine.

The 13yo and I are building a a plastic antweight (1 lbs) battle bot. It’s a servo powered lifter. It’s an original design with a lifting mechanism patterned from a bot we found online.

I think we have the all the electronics, and right now we’re printing the first full prototype. To check the screw holes and lifting mechanism.

We’ll see how it goes.

After watching every “discovery” season of battle bots then seeing their independent stuff it’s clear to see how much non sense is brought in from show producers. Deemed “fan favorites” previously getting easy preselected fights. Are all of a sudden decimated in later seasons when matches are random again...

I am bewildered people spend 100s of hours and tens of thousands of dollars to to have such a piss poor chance in making an impact with the idiotic show producers.

And from what I gather there is 0 financial compensation not even for the tournament winners. (Vegas shows I believe they are paid)

I use to seriously , ridiculously wanted to make an appearance on battle bots. Of the show format comes back I think I am better off and would enjoy a “lower” competition much more ...

I use to be madly addicted to Battlebots. But this latest iteration in the end seems more like a planned show then the competition I grew up loving.

Builders are making bots that simply look interesting to get picked with very little competitive edge. To be picked against producer deemed favorites.

Plus these new show configurations these non championship tournaments seem silly.

And they refuse to cut those awful pauses before the matches start...

I’ll try to watch more NHRL more ...

I think in general there might be too much uncertainty packed into the numbers. Most matches in general are not roughly 50-50. The only one that surprises me directionally is Free Shipping over Deathroll... I think I'd expect it to be more likely to go the other way.

Inside the catbot, the electronics are very simple. This receiver board also serves as the power distribution board and basically the only electronics.

The 9v battery powers the board, which then sends power to the 2 lifter motors and the 2 drive motors based on the signal received from the cheapo radio transmitter. That's it.
