  1. I swear #climatologists think less about #climatechange, #epidemiologists think less about #vaccination, and #paleontologists think less about #evolution, than the crowd of screeching #denialists who descend like locusts on any news story even vaguely related to any of these subjects.

  5. Because this keeps coming up, and it's good to have a reference: there was never, ever a time when #climatologists were predicting #globalcooling on a human scale.

There was a brief time in the '70s when it looked like we might be headed into another #glacial period of the current ice age (yes) a little faster than expected, which got a lot of media attention. If this had actually happened, it would have been over centuries rather than the usual millennia, but of course that wasn't sensationalist enough, so there was considerable hype.

Meanwhile, researchers in the then-young science of #climatology accurately predicted continued #warming and the accompanying #climatechange: journals.ametsoc.org/view/jour

"Scientists used to warn us about global cooling, now they say it's #globalwarming! Make up your minds, stupid scientists!"

Of course, even if there had been legitimate fears about global cooling fifty years ago, that wouldn't invalidate modern concerns about warming. One of the most fundamental principles of science is updating your knowledge base when new information comes along.

As it happens, this isn't even an example of that. Just another lie from the anti-#science loons. You won't convince them with the above link, but the lurkers might take note.

  9. Do #climatologists understand "relative" humidity? RELATIVE humidity is not determined by counting water molecules in an air mass. With the same number of water molecules, when an air mass heats up, its relative humidity drops. Look at how silly this explanation of tornado formation is. What do they mean by "warm moist air"? Are they talking about "relative" or "absolute" humidity close to the ground? When air is heated up, it rises and cools down to have a higher relative humidity. #tornado

  13. #Climatologists don't study plant morphology and don't understand how wind is form on land. They only look at terrain, but not vegetation when explaining climate patterns. If part of a large forest is deforested to create farmland, the farmland will be heated up faster during the day and loses heat faster during the night compared to the surrounding forest. On a plain, low pressure is a result of the heating of farmland sucking in colder air from a nearby forest to create wind. #climatechange

am looking for reco's on feudalism's environmental impact.

what am wondering: the "Fall of Rome" basically unleashes a period or re/colonization in Europe with massive amounts of migration, de/re/urbanization across the land that is being consolidated under fiefdoms & kingdoms.

this must have had a major climate & health impact like the 1315 Great Famine & the plague

videos & text preferred: documentaries, books etc

  27. We saw 68°F this morning locally. Better late than never. Aspiring #Climatologists need to know what it means if #GlobalWarming gets big enough to wash out the angle of the Sun (seasonal change), meaning - is that kind of scaling still some unknown magnitude larger than current observations ? Are we good enough to discern that boundary or is that determination still a bridge too far ? Still looking for a graduate thesis...or might some smartass AP student beat you to it ?

#Climatologists tell us that much of western #NorthAmerica is in the throes of a 1,000 year #drought. #Farmers in the #Midwest are facing deepening drought conditions putting wheat harvests at risk. #Kansas #PublicRadio reports that wheat harvests there may be the lowest in over 60 years! I've seen like this once before in #LakeTahoe in 2021. But as an easterner it's easy to rationalize that: "it's the west, the west is subject to forest fires." Long Island is not the west.

  34. "Climategate" is the most common term that the media and blogosphere gave to a relatively effective #manufactroversy (in the US, at least) that followed the November 2009 release of thousands of illegally-obtained e-mails from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK. Global-warming denialists immediately pounced on the story, claiming that much of the data supporting the existence of global warming were fabricated. The media quoted many of the e-mailsout of context to make it seem as if there was huge disagreement among #climatologists and that they'd faked or hidden their data.

By 2011, nine separate investigations by the British government and by multiple independent ethics committees had been completed. None found any evidence of fraud or manipulation of data. The CRU data was also independently replicated.
