Can Modern-Day Italians Understand #Latin? A YouTuber Puts It to the Test on the Streets of Rome

"Most of the individuals he addresses claim that they can’t understand him at first. But as the conversation continues — in Latin on one side, Italian on the other — it becomes clear that they can indeed figure out what he wants to know.

" 'Italians are almost universally exposed only to the traditional Italian pronunciation of Latin (called the pronuncia scolastica), otherwise known as the Ecclesiastical Pronunciation,' Ranieri notes in a comment. Did you know that Ridley Scott's Gladiator is an uncredited remake of a film from 1964? In this deep dive video I analyze both versions and check them against the real history of the Roman Empire circa 180 CE. This was a fun and illuminating video to make!

Hello! I’m a #medievalist with a soft spot for #classicists 🤓

Not seeing many #Classicists on Mastodon, compared to, say, medievalists, book history people, or 18th-c.-ists. Am I just not tapped into the right networks or is there some reason they haven't made the jump?

Ok, #histodons (and @histodons) is a thing already, #archaologists are gathering, but so far scholars in other branches (#philology, #numismatics, #epigraphy etc.) of #AncMed (#Classicists, as some might say) or #antiquities (in a broader sense) aren't as easy to find around here.

#antiquidons, anyone?

If I am simply missing out on a well established #, please enlighten me.
