Archaeologists working on a site next to the Rive Thames have found what they believe to be Britain's first hospital. Previously it was thought that hospitals came after the Norman Conquest. But the site is revealing skeletons of people who were suffering from TB and cancer. It is hoped that DNA analysis will help to further understanding.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c24y466e1vqo -

In Ancient Pits Near #Stonehenge, Scientists See Hints of #Solstice Ritual
British #archaeologists may have found the remains of a site where people celebrated the solstice thousands of years ago, a few miles from the famed stone circle. The archaeologists said they believed that the pits in Bulford, some 400 feet apart, held wooden poles that formed a line that pointed toward the sun during the solstices.

#Archaeologists Were Scanning Farmland—And Found 5,000-Year-Old Burial Mounds
The experts were already aware that the long barrows—elongated burial mounds common around 3000 B.C.E.—were present throughout Bohemia, but they simply couldn’t see them. Fortunately, a new study published in Archaeological Prospection has demonstrated how #remotesensing strategies can bring these once-hidden prehistorical burial monuments into view, even revealing settlement areas around sites.

You know what happens when you run a #DnD game where all of the players are IRL #Archaeologists ?
They get to know each other and then use moments of downtime to plot working on future research projects together.
#TTRPG gaming leads to #Science , people! It's a gateway drug!

#Aerial #lidarmapping allows #archaeologists to efficiently #map large areas with archaeologically relevant structures. However, the #article cited in the appendix #critically examines the fact that this increasingly occurs over the heads of #indigenous #tribes, whose way of life and traditional #knowledge are at risk of being #overlooked and #ignored. This raises not only #ethical questions.

I get where this is coming from & how #technofossils make sense given the geo-/paleontological backgrounds of the authors referred to here, but if we're talking about future #archaeologists, I'd think #artifacts still would be quite a suitable term, no? 🤔
