  1. This might be a useful Obsidian tip. I tried Obsidian (again!) last year but I just couldn’t walk away from Bear because it’s so good. (Bear is macOS only but they did add web access last year.)

“I discovered Obsidian's core plugin "File recovery". Enabled by default, it saves the state of your files every five minutes and keeps that history for a whole week!”

  2. The circle is now complete. 😌

I can add links to notes in #BearNotes from my work logs & outlines in #Workflowy, keeping the latter clean while taking advantage of the features it has that Bear does not (and visa-versa).

(I tried in the past to use Bear like a wiki/log tool and it felt like it strained my mental model. I prefer using Bear for standalone notes generally speaking.)

Using Workflowy for work logging has been tremendously helpful. Never need to recall “what did I do yesterday??”!

  3. @tekphloyd Like #Drafts, #BearNotes doesn’t work on Windows which for a multi-OS user like me is basically a dealbreaker to ever using either of them.

But you’re right - #Obsidian’s mobile experience absolutely sucks. It’s because they never made a separate mobile-friendly app (or mode) and chose instead to try and incorporate all of the desktop UI/UX features and functions.

  4. @am1no @steveroy Yes, I've tried practically every note-taking app, and for my neurological profile, #BearNotes remains the best choice. To each their own; ultimately, they're just tools to achieve a goal.

  5. @steveroy I've tried using #Obsidian many times, and I've tried to get used to it, really. However, there's an inherent friction in its use that bothers me greatly. #BearNotes, on the other hand, is the epitome of simplicity. The #Shortcuts + #BearNotes combo is perfect for my zettelkasten workflow.

  6. I’m looking into moving my notes out of Apple’s ecosystem, hoping not to be locked into another one. I’m giving a go to #Obsidian and #BearNotes. Any other one I should try? Bonus points for being cross-platform and being able to import my existing notes.

  7. I took a stab at cleaning up my code for BearExporter, a Python script to export all of your Bear notes to Markdown files you can use with Obsidian, read in the terminal, or whatever.

As the old saying goes "it works for me!" but I know it's not exactly great code, but it is available.

I'm not great at Python but I'll try to improve it as time allows.

  8. @amerpie Just came across this one based on a post from @jantzen. I've not tried to tweak the CSS yet, but the baseline capability is simple and likely what you might be interested in.

Do wish someone made a plugin that gave export format options similar to what Bear Notes App offers. That app is so good about allowing you to easily copy text or export files in various formats VERY simply.

    So damned handy.

  9. @CodingItWrong @dh #BearNotes is fantastic. I tried Obsidian for 2 years but remained constantly frustrated with it on mobile. I now use both Apple Notes (for clipping, saving tidbits, creating dashboards) and then Bear for all longer writing, exporting, etc. I link Bear notes in Apple Notes so it’s like using one app that has everything I need. Works great.

I originally used Bear for years after it was released. So I came full circle.

  10. I've been diligently logging (most of) the books I read in #GoodReads for years - but I also like to write down thoughts in #UpNote - which uses #markdown rather like #BearNotes and #obsidian
I thought it would be nice to link thoughts to books easily.

So I wrote this utility to convert from the GoodReads #csv export into Markdown. I'd be delighted if someone else found it useful

  11. For those using Bear Notes App, they have some lovely new features with their 2.1 update, including a quick open command to search notes and tags.

Also, interestingly, supports importing #obsidian files and also markdown files with attachments generally.

I use both #obsidian and Bear and love both.

  12. Today I was reminded that this is an official iMessage sticker that we shipped with Bear. 😄

  13. @maxzsol I have a pocket planner too to jot things down quickly. And to avoid potential distractions from having a phone in front of me.

Recording these in #BearNotes means I can search for past events. As for tasks, I use #ThingsApp as my main to-do list manager. Putting my three most important tasks here is part of my daily reflection/planning process to remind myself what I should focus on. Small tasks that I need to clear get added to Things.

  14. My journal has evolved into a #dailylog. I record my thoughts throughout the day. When they expand beyond one paragraph, I turn them into a standalone note in #BearNotes.

I review the logs daily, weekly, and monthly to help me have an overview of where my direction.

  15. @zeab @acutesoftware Yeah, that’s one way to do it but requires breaking up existing notes/pages. So far I have no problems with #ObsidianMD and #BearNotes since they don’t use blocks. I haven’t tried with #NotionHQ but I suspect it would face similar issues with #Logseq
