How it’s going 😁
30 months, 569 commits, 12.971 lines of #Swift & #SwiftUI
And most importantly, 4 platforms at once, plus widgets, complications & #Shortcuts.
Today I am finally releasing the first beta of GlanceCam for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple TV.
Where GlanceCam for Mac is made to be an all-day companion, this suite of apps is built from the ground up to be the fastest when you’re on the go, on your wrist or on a couch.
#TestFlight to help me test it!

#Shortcuts quick tip:
If you have a workflow that you trigger from the #iOS share sheet, and you want the workflow to go back to the app that you started it from, you can add a Get App action to the top, capturing a reference to the currently active app, and then at the end of the workflow, use that reference to open that app again, like so:
https://forum.actions.work/t/how-to-end-your-afo-based-workflows-where-they-started/860?ref=mastodon
(This works exceptionally well with my own app Actions For #Obsidian but also for any other app.)

I tried Android phones for more than a year, now I’m moving back to iOS!
Background
Last year I decided to move to Android side for various purposes, to experience how Android side of things have developed while I was on the Apple ecosystem for more than 5 years. Initially I went with One Plus 13 and used it for about 9 months. Then I exchanged it for Samsung S24 Ultra and used it for around 6 months more before I finally decided to settle back to iOS.
The Android experience
What I Liked
- Hardware
- Both OnePlus 13 and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra had excellent hardware.
- OnePlus felt lighter and more comfortable with the leather back and curves.
- Samsung’s flat, squared display just looked and felt premium.
- Performance
- Absolute performance beasts.
- Multitasking, split-screen, PiP all worked flawlessly without hiccups.
- Charging & Battery
- Charging speeds are great on both.
- OnePlus SuperVOOC was insanely fast and actually useful in daily life.
- Useful Extras
- IR blaster on OnePlus was surprisingly handy for controlling TVs and ACs.
- S-Pen on S24 Ultra was genuinely useful for quick notes, calculations, and even as a camera shutter.
- Launcher Flexibility
- Niagara Launcher felt weird on OnePlus but worked really well on Samsung.
What Didn’t Work for Me
- Accessories Ecosystem
- OnePlus had poor third-party accessory(cases and screenguards) support.
- Samsung was better, but still not great in terms of quality and consistency.
- No native Magsafe! S-pen won’t work with magsafe if you got the case for it.
- Fingerprint Scanner + Screen Guards
- This was honestly a mess.
- Many screen guards don’t work properly with the in-display fingerprint scanner.
- You end up doing hacks like registering the same finger multiple times.
- Even then, reliability is hit or miss.
- Face unlock sometimes interferes when you are scanning your finger and it leads you to lockscreen edit screen instead of going to the Homescreen.
- Older rear fingerprint scanners were simply more reliable, like from the early Pixel phones.
- Software Updates
- Samsung promises long-term support, but updates often felt delayed.
- OneUI 8.5 is still in beta since maybe forever. And will be available to the latest gen flagship first, then you have to wait for the older flagships to get it.
- Even monthly security patches were often a month late.
- No excitement around updates compared to iOS.
- App Experience
- iOS still gets better treatment from developers.
- Apps arrive earlier and feel more polished.
- Automation & Customization
- iOS Shortcuts is still miles ahead.
- Samsung Routines is decent, but not at that level.
- OnePlus doesn’t offer much here.
- Android customization relies heavily on third-party tools, which I personally don’t enjoy using.
- Lockscreen Experience
- iOS offers cleaner, more useful lockscreen customization out of the box.
- Android needs effort (or third-party apps) to get close.
- Camera Gimmicks
- The 100x zoom sounds cool but is mostly useless.
- I never really used those shots for anything meaningful.
How did my week with iOS go?
I went with the popular iPhone 17. It finally has the 120Hz refresh rate screen with AOD, most of the ‘pro’ features. I think the LiDAR, ProRAW and extra zoom are the only thing that I feel could be useful to me going forward, but I’m sure I won’t mind missing those. The standard phone actually feels complete now.
- I am loving the magsafe wallet and stand.
- Camera apps, native and 3rd party, capture amazing photos.
- The Shortcuts app! How I use my shortcuts and automations deserves another post. But I love exploring these.
- I have customised the control center as per my preference.
- I haven’t finalised my homescreen setup yet as I am not sure what I should put there. Everything is just a quick search away(the way I like).
- I love the built-in background noises feature. No need of additional app.
- The cases and screenguard – I don’t even have to overthink about this anymore. FaceID works flawlessly most of the time.
- I don’t mind the Liquid Glass much. Still getting used to the new phone app.
- What I don’t like is that if I tap on an item from a list, there’s a halo-ish effect? instead of showing I selected a row. I don’t know if I tapped the correct row item.
What I miss coming from Andriod?
3 things –
- Split screen or PiP mode for better multitasking. Useful in calculations etc.
- App cloning. Using same app with different accounts.
- Secure folder is actually secure. It is hidden quite well, both in OxygenOS and OneUI, locked with a different password than your phone’s passcode. On iOS, that’s not the case. Hidden folder is well visible to everyone with your phone’s password and that doesn’t inspire much confidence.
Going forward
While it felt like an adventure giving Android phones a go, I think I’ll stick with iOS as wife also has one, a few of my close friends have it as well and I like the excitement of getting the software update when everyone gets it, and that it has a much wider accessory support. This post is not about Android vs iOS or which one is objectively better. We are way past that debate. Both are amazing. It’s up to the individual which OS fulfils their purpose. Which one are you sticking with? And are you planning to switch anytime soon?

Bare with me but F2 as a shortcut for editing the content of the selected cell in Libre Office Calc / Excel / … is useless. Why putting so far from our fingers an action that we may need to use hundreds of times of day in such softwares?
(no I don't use a mouse when editing a table)

Trying to use #MicrosoftOffice on Windows recently after many years on macOS was frustrating.
I still know a few of the classic Word menu-based #shortcuts like alt-F-V for file print preview, and alt-E for the edit menu etc. I was one of the holdouts who kept the underlining in the menus ('KeyTips') when they became hidden by default. But with the 'new' ribbons, the older menus are gone (unless on macOS).
However, their shortcuts live on - there must be a nice list somewhere, maybe via archive.org? Help!
"In newer versions of Office, most of the old Alt key menu shortcuts still work, too. However, you need to know the full shortcut. For example, press Alt, and then press one of the old menu keys E (Edit), V (View), I (Insert), and so on. A notification pops up saying you're using an access key from an earlier version. If you know the entire key sequence, you can still use it."
-
TIL that when #Apple #Shortcuts outputs an ISO8601 formatted date to a file (2026-03-27T14:27:00-0400", when it reads it back in it converts the string to two dates because it doesn't recognize the 'T' between the date and time components. It finds the date part and assumes it's midnight, and then finds the time part and assumes it's today resulting in two dates. You can't make this 💩 up. I'm awestruck by the incompetence of the devs who wrote that code.

I wanted to share #AppleMusic playlists as plain text with others, so I wrote a simple #shortcut: https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/d87571de0c4442e7935e5f392885c8fd

#Siri is garbage.
GlanceCam for iOS will support #Shortcuts and one of the actions returns a frame in JPEG for a camera, including when invoked in the Siri UI.
Pretty cool if you ask me. Except when 1 out of 5 times it shows this hallucination nonsense instead:
Show snapshot in GlanceCam
To view a snapshot in GlanceCam:
1. Press and release the side button and the Volume Up button simultaneously.
2. Tap the "Done" button.
3. The snapshot will be displayed in GlanceCam.Apple Support

I honestly did not believe it was possible to make iOS Shortcuts more buggy and UX-hostile than it was but bloody hell, iOS 26 has really pushed the boat under the carthorse. It is an unstable mess.
Thank the lord I've already got pretty much any automation I want/need already written and I never have to actually deal with the app itself.
Ugh.
(And I bet the "add items to playlist" action is still broken from years back.)
#iOS #Shortcuts -
@rasterweb
in addition there is also an URL scheme available for shortcuts. This way you can easily add them to reminders or calendar entries. URLs should look like this:shortcuts://run-workflow?name=Bilder%20kombinieren

I didn't want to buy "smart" scales so I got regular ones and created a simple Shortcut!
It's simpler than my last smart scales, which bricked themselves:
1. Stand on scales
2. Run shortcut

GIMP uses GEGL. I will briefly quote; I want you to seek GEGL data yourself at their site. It's a wonderful architecture
Quote
GEGL (Generic Graphics Library) is a data flow based image processing framework, providing floating point processing and non-destructive image processing capabilities to GNU Image Manipulation Program and other projects (imgflo, GNOME Photos, iconographer, …)
GIMP site also has interviews with the programmers. Go and seek

Keyboard shortcuts power in UI control
I've had consistent good keyboard experiences with keyboard shortcuts in both closed source and Open Source programs
The program suite by AutoDesk ACAD which I know from version 10.0, was run on a single tasking 286 CPU with a seperate 287 math coprocessor installed. That computer was in URC, the computer lab of my University in SR/SA.
In that period of multitasking dark ages on x86 not even the coprocessor could be integrated on the CPU die. Of course my Amiga multitasked all it's programs in the same period, but that's for another toot ;)
ACAD10 and others have a set of nice functions which I still know by heart, because I can make nice 3D images with themSequence
- o (ortho)
- s (snap)
- l (line) from point to point indicated by digitizer
- layer (define layers and colours for objects)
- a (arc from {end of} axis to nice random point)
- the object snap function is at work here
- create different arcs in different layers
- setvar
- SURFTAB1 (value as large as the math coprocessor can handle)
- SURFTAB2 (same as above)
- revsurf (revolution of surfaces) rotate the arcs around axis
- a gorgeous multilayered / multi coloured object is created
- the SURFTAB valuse will be important in the next step
- shade
- autoshade() creates a magnifique shaded object within a number of seconds to a minute
The 3D objects look gorgeous!
I can create them in seconds on simple hardware, and can play by making them for hours

GIMP v3.04
It was this early morning, when I tried to fire up GIMP, I noticed that I had forgotten to install this magnificent gfx tool kit.
I ran
apt install gimpimmediatelyI've been using GIMP ever since it came out, decades ago (spawn 1995). Even though the UI was totally different from what I was used to, adaptation was fast and my fluency in use of GIMP increased fast. I like working in GIMP
The GIMP is 31 years old
Quote
In 1995, Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis began developing GIMP as a semester project at University of California, Berkeley for the eXperimental Computing Facility.[8] The software was originally named the General Image Manipulation Program
GIMP v0.54 was first released in 1996
Over the decades I've seen a lot of users emitting futile complaints about the GUI, the use of many windows / viewports, while I can easily transition from closed source software on client's machines, to the GIMP, just by switching the mindset regarding the UI. The logic behind UI decisions is easily traceable.
GIMP has so many functions, I know of nobody who knows how to use all of them.
You should learn what you need to do, get fluent into those tasks, and learn more when you need more. This mind set also works in VIM, which has a massive ammount of functions and commands to make not only your programming in different languages more pleasant, it also has subtle assist functions which makes your source entries even more enjoyable.
GIMP always gives me consistent performance and I can rely on the keyboard shortcuts without having to use the mouse to select functions brushes, et all.
GIMP is for me a must have in my photo correction work flow. I've never relied on closed source software for those tasks, GIMP always has similar functions, many working even more efficient with your computer's CPU / GPU resources. For the Love of GIMP
next section moved to seperate toot
Note:
I've always known that Open Source programs can be trusted better than closed source equivalents, something you all know when it comes down to the big photo manupilation suite, which enshittifies everything for its paying users.GIMP shall always have its users back
You can trust GIMP
