Si terminando febrero acogimos con agrado el sencillo Kill It Queen (notas disponibles), ahora abrazamos este viraje a las guitarras.
Out Of Your Mind.
Manteniendo su sonido, ese que está demostrando que no tenía nada de artificioso en su creación, que no era un producto industrial sino su forma personal de afrontar el pop, y que por tanto va con ella a cualquier lugar, da lo mismo de quienes se rodee para componer y producir, Ava Max nos da ahora una cucharada de lo conocido y otra de sorpresa.
Para confeccionar esta pieza podríamos decir que Amanda Ava Koçi baja la palanca ABBA y sube la de Queen.
El veredicto es un doble check.
Las estrofas se yerguen sobre una base dicharachera mantenida en un terreno animoso sin apabullar, sin bombos ni chisporroteos, y ahí los versos se hilan gracias a la sonoridad de las últimas palabras. Luego aparece un pequeño puente sin la base, más desnudo. Para llegar al estribillo en dos partes donde regresa el beat con las rpm subidas y unas guitarras salando los versos primero y una mínima distorsión vocal (They used to say) acentuada por agudizar las notas y por alargar la última sílaba de los versos.
Pareciera que la artista estuvo escuchando y estudiando algunos giros de los de Mercury para recrearlos en su mundito, manteniendo señas como sus Ma Ma Ma, quizá, a la postre, su firma sónica.
¿No debería ser así? Contar con buenos referentes de los que aprender conservando los propios distintivos.

Aún no hace tanto, aunque lo parezca (¡cómo pasan los años!), del carpetazo y posterior puesta de largo de RAYE. La artista culminó un contrato de mierda con una compañía que la tenía amordazada y se fue por su cuenta.
Y deslumbró. Mejor: lo sigue haciendo.
Comienzo así porque si festejamos tanto aquello fue debido a su extrañeza, a que las jugadas tan redondas, por peliculeras, suelen ser menos contundentes.
El 28 de agosto ya comenté aquí -bajo el paraguas popazo- la situación profesional de esa interesante -y eterna- aspirante a diva pop que es Ava Max junto al estreno del álbum -¿maldito? ¿profético?- Don't Click Play.
Ava, como RAYE, se liberó con ese largo de las cadenas discográficas. Ahora es independiente y ya lo demuestra dando pop sin miseria ni vergüenza.
Y ese pop es el de siempre, o sea, es el suyo; como sospechábamos, no necesita(ba) de equipazos que dirigieran su visión del pop ni esta estaba adulterada por criterios discográficos. Max tiene un estilo propio y es este. Ya es más de lo que muches pueden decir, y hacer sin grandes sellos detrás.
Con varios ganchos en la letra como sacados de series juveniles tipo Overcompensating (la de la Benito) y casi todo ganchos en el tema, que se presenta entre dorado y rosa. Ya empieza casi en outro para entrar la letra subrayada por un teclado pulsátil hasta anunciar su estribillo con unos "go".
El estribillo es pura fiesta (Carly Rae meets Gaga), cualquiera diría que está soltando lastre con esos kill it y esos agudos canoros. Todo lo cual sube como la espuma en la parte final, tímidamente disco y locamente poppy.
Ava Max suena a ella misma con unas ganas que llevábamos años sin encontrarle. Lo normal es que no le ocurra lo que a RAYE, ya con poder seguir activa creando en sus términos es suficiente

I love this song so much. It reminds me of Queen in full pomp mode. And not just because of the title. It’s the structure of the song, the lyrics, and the sound. All sound like Queen to me.
If anyone sees anything that says that’s intentional let me know. All I’ve read is Ava Max talking about leaving her label and getting to create the music she wants. This is the first release of that new era.

Semanas atrás vaticiné, artículo de prensa mediante, lo evidente, porque yo leo mal no solo los pronósticos, también presente y pasado. Dejo enlace al final. Vengo a confirmarme.
Asisto con asombro a una pequeña ola que nada cambiará a favor de Ava Max después de hacerse pública la trastienda sentimental y profesional que tuvo que acometer para crear Don't Click Play, el disco que presenta como puede.
Un largo mucho más conseguido (parece un milagro que suene a ella) de lo que aparentaba, sin llegar a ser notable. Aquí, como en los temas que sacó para abrir boca, no hay taconazo, solo pasarela.
Aprueba sobrada aunque sin méritos.
El disco sigue sonando Max y además aprovecha la coyuntura para explorar soterradamente otras vías, pero el canguelo con el que transita esos caminos y, sobre todo, la puta querencia ochentosa taponan rutas que quizá tenían minerales sónicos preciosos a tratar en la composición y la producción.
Lost Your Faith, como ya destaqué, es de lo mejor del largo. Es el estribillo melódico que siempre funcionará bien cantado y expuesto tal cual debía ser. Le faltan mimos pero va sobrado. Incluso con un nuevo equipo supo dar con él.
Hallelujah!, coño ya.
Sucks desperdicia una bella melodía y We hot parece una mixtape de la Charli de Sucker. Violin y Skin, en cambio, tienen miedo de darse al europop.
Luego está la inicial y homónima Don't Click Play. Debe grabar video y hacerla sencillo. Empieza ya con un gancho ultrapop de tatareo y sigue con una locución Kylie circa Lights Camera Action. De ahí a un preestribillo de Aahs y al estribillo donde suplica, paradójicamente, a le Dj que no ponga la música. ¿O todo es estribillo? Extraño más estructura, la parquedad se come a la canción.
Hay talento, faltan matices.
