Turntable is a Universal Scrobbling App for Linux
Those looking for an easy way to “scrobble” music on Linux, no matter which music player they use, should check a new app called Turntable. For those unfamiliar, “scrobbling” is the process of logging the music you listen to, as you listen to it, to services like Last.fm and Libre.fm. When you play a track, its data (song title, artist, album and date and time played) gets “scrobbled” to your profile. Over time, you build up a record of your listening habits1 on your profile and the service you use is able to show recent and all-time rankings of your :sys_more_orange:

GNOME 48 Expands Core Apps With New Audio Player
When GNOME 48 is released in March it will debut with a brand-new audio player. Per a recent merge request, Decibels graduates from GNOME Incubator to GNOME Core Apps as part of GNOME 48, making the software something GNOME recommends downstream Linux distributions include to give users a fully-featured GNOME experience. You may be familiar with or even using Decibels already. I wrote about the app in late 2023, and it’s been available to install from Flathub for almost as long. For anyone not familiar with it, Decibels is a no-frills audio player designed for the GNOME desktop (but can :sys_more_orange:

Ardour 8.8 (Open Source DAW) Drops Fresh Fixes & Features
Ardour is one of the most popular and powerful open-source digital audio workstations (DAW) around, and a major new update was recently made available. Now, I won’t profess to be some kind of music-making maestro, though I did spend a lot my late teens face-first in FL Studio (formerly Fruity Loops) trying – and failing – to channel my inner Cash Cash (’08 era, before they got big). Ardour 8.8 is the second update to the DAW in 2 weeks because, as the software’s devs explain, “v8.7 was only released a couple of weeks ago, but it turned out to :sys_more_orange:

Audacity 3.6 Add Master Effects, New Compressor & Limiter + More
A new version of the open-source, cross-platform audio editor Audacity is available to download, kitted out with some major new features. Audacity 3.6 introduces support for master effects. These adjust the sound of project as a whole (the ‘master mix’ composed of all individual tracks and any realtime effects applied to them) and, usually, done as the final stage of editing prior to export. Brand new Compressor and Limiter effects are included in this update to Audacity, along with a set of handy presets the developers say are applicable to a wide range of use cases. Gain reduction history is :sys_more_orange:

Use Reco to Record System Audio & Microphone Input in Ubuntu
Looking to record system sounds and your microphone at the same time on Ubuntu, and save it to a single audio file? Reco is a free, open-source audio recording app for Linux, written in Vala and GTK. Although it’s designed for elementary OS it works well on Ubuntu and other Linux distributions, and doesn’t look too conspicuous on the modern GNOME desktop, either. Better still, Reco is available to install from Flathub. Being able to capture your voice and your system’s audio output (be it game audio, software, music, someone talking in a broadcast) simultaneously is useful for content creation, :sys_more_orange:

Audacity 3.4 Released with Music Workflows, Time Stretch Tool
A brand new version of Audacity, the open-source audio workstation, has been released. Audacity 3.4 includes a number of new features and improvements, include new music workflows that will greatly enhance the editor’s appeal with musicians. One of the biggest new features in Audacity 3.4 is a new Beat and Beasures grid. This new view makes it easier to align clips to a project’s tempo and rhythm, with options to show subdivisions, and snap clips to the nearest beat. Also included is a new Time Stretch tool. This makes it a breeze to change the duration of an audio clip :sys_more_orange:

Decibels is a Linux Audio Player Designed for Non-Music Files
Want playback a lecture or meeting you recorded, transcribe an interview, or play a podcast episode without adding it your music library? Check out Decibels, an audio player for Linux written in Typescript and GTK4/libadwaita. While Decibels can play music files, it is not designed for that purpose. It is more of a non-music, multi-purpose audio player to play single files in, rather than managing a library of recordings, handling playlists, or showing you tags, metadata, album artwork, and other fluff. Some may ask, “Why not just use a regular music player?” and they would have a point. If you :sys_more_orange:

Doing a clean install on macOS is a LOT of work. But @RogueAmoeba give me joy when I register my licenses. I smile every single time. And it’s even accessible!
Honorable mentions to @KeyboardMaestro for audibly saying, “thanks!” and to @[email protected] for throwing confetti (but no sound!)

Professional DAW ‘Studio One’ Arrives on Linux (Public Beta)
PreSonus’ digital audio workstation Studio One is now available on Linux — for the first time, ever! Studio One is a (closed-source) all-in-one DAW toy can use create music from scratch using virtual instruments, loops, and composers; record music, instruments, and other types of audio from connected equipment; and mix, master, and export audio. It’s full of the usual kinds of features, such as virtual instruments, audio effects, and plugins (including a DeEsser – super useful for processing video voiceovers), smart templates, ProEQ3, and more — though some features aren’t (yet) available on Linux. If you’re a musician, a podcast :sys_more_orange:

Apply Real-Time Effect to Audio on Ubuntu with Easy Effects
Many moons ago I covered a neat audio tool called PulseEffects, which made it easy to modify the sound output of any app on a global or per-app basis. As you may infer from the name, PulseEffects was built around and designed for PulseAudio. Most major Linux distributions have switched from PulseAudio to PipeWire for their audio handling. Enter Easy Effects, a successor to PulseEffects that sports a modern GTK4 interface, and an expanded set of features that enable to function as a powerful audio effects processor for PipeWire applications. It offers an equalizer, limiter, and compressor (among others) and :sys_more_orange:

Use ‘Ear Tag’ to Quickly Edit Audio Tags on Linux
We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to audio tag editors for Linux, but ever heard the expression ‘sometimes less is more’? It sounds silly but hey: it’s a maxim that resonates with me. Take Ear Tag, a new music tag editor for Linux written in Python and using GTK4/libadwaita. Its a simple, straightforward tool that lets you quickly edit audio tags for individual music files. Unlike fully-featured MP3 tag editors like Kid3, Tagger, or MusicBrainz Picard, Ear Tag doesn’t try to manage your entire music library. And though it can edit metadata for multiple audio files at once it’s :sys_more_orange:

I make #audio, #MIDI, and #video software devices & controllers. Mainly for #abletonlive, #maxforlive, #touchosc and #traktor. Plus a couple of standalone #audioapps.
Almost all of them are free / pay what you want.
I’m also pretty keen on computer / video #retrogaming and #cats!
Here are a few of the things I've made. More info here: https://andrewnorris.uk
