I have been ordering from DigiKey and they've always shipped from the United States (apparently when ordering from the Canadian site it's perfectly normal that they would ship from the United States, at least that seems like their attitude). My understanding about why they are doing this, is they don't have to deal with taxes and duty this way.
Previous orders, this has been "not a big deal, a bit of a pain, but not really a big deal". This time (split order) it's been a really very significant difference. The first part of the order was something like 36% border fees.
I've tried to find a Canadian place, and probably have found a couple of reasonable alternatives, but I'd really like to ask if anyone has some good electronics shipping from Canada.
I get to some degree, it just doesn't really make sense to try to do that, as most of the manufactures are based in the United States. Even Canadian electronics companies, that are "manufacturers" are to some degree dealing with having to get stuff from the United States.
Anyway, if you have a place to look at I'd love to hear. Thanks. #AskingFediverse #AskingFedi -

I don't remember a specific naming scheme, but I was young and it was a long time ago.As for clients. I did use minuet for a little bit. But by the time I was using it, the web was already more interesting.

Questions for other old-timers who might remember the heyday of #Gopher better than I do.
Were there any common/popular naming conventions? Like, were they 90% gopher.example.com, like every website was (and so many still are) www.example.com?
What dedicated gopher clients were around at the time? I know I used something that wasn't also a web browser, but I can't remember what.

Any tech nerds know why it was originally called 8086? We're there 8085 other ones that came before it?

What's up with this keyboard? This is from ThingsBook. Am I right that this is a "very old" Apple keyboard (image is cropped from the iPad, as it just displays in the middle of the screen). #AskingFedi #AskingFediverse

Any of my ADHD friends on here have any good books written by experts to recommend to help get a better understanding of it?

Soooo I was sitting outside around 11pm, filming an approaching hedgehog, when I suddenly heard this very loud sound. Whatever it is doesn't sound happy. I've looked up the distress calls of hedgehogs and martens because both live around here. But this doesn't really sound like either.
Does anyone have any idea what animal this could be? I'm in Europe btw.

#askingfedi What other search engines are you using apart from duckduckgo. Search engines that are not slowly turning into chat with AI are welcome

Hi. I need some #techSupport with #Mobilizon. #askingFedi
I can't see the participants on the confirmation page. Initially it showed that a few people had already registered, but now it only displays menus and other page elements with a blank space where the participants should be. I am using elementary OS, with Web and Vivaldi browsers. It happens both in regular and private/incognito mode. I tried adjusting the settings but I can't figure it out.

CW: Questions for tea drinkers...
What is a hairy crab?
Why would you drink duck poop?
And does the dragon get mad for you drinking from their well?
Two I have drunk, one I want to try. Somewhat serious, but not really. Any and all answers are welcome. And also further questions.

What's the maximum number of onboarding screens I should have in my app?
It's a local static website builder / markdown-based blogging CMS. Right now I have two value props + one screen to give their first project an internal name and website type (blog, portfolio, etc).

Okay nerds (affectionate). I spent not a little time DuckDuckGoing earlier for advice on this front, but wasn't able to get sufficient information that satisfied me, so I'm #AskingFedi for advice from #DIYers and other creative people.
As of late, I've been finding myself out at night in areas with less street lighting and whatnot (think local parks that don't close at sunset, but at a set time year round). I picked up a pair of small LED headlamps on sale today to help with that. Set to the low setting, they're fine, and I'm usually using my phone while out doing these things... but it occurs to me that since I have two of these, it might not hurt to modify one to a more night vision friendly red color instead.
Most information I've found for projects of this sort are designed for small 2x AA or AAA wand style flashlights, and usually are just like "buy some red wrapping cellophane and rubber band a couple to few layers over the end of the flashlight" which given the form factor of my light isn't ideal. I did also eye tape designed for temporarily fixing car tail light housings, but wasn't sure how well something like that would work on a flashlight.
How would you go about making a red lens cover/filter for a small headlamp? I attached a picture of the units I bought, if that's a help for what sort of advice you might give.
Edit: More information that's come up in the replies I've gotten so far: I don't have a soldering iron and don't think I know anyone local with one I can borrow, so replacing the LED with a red one is probably not within the budget constraints I had in mind here. It does look like the front plate of the light will come off with a hex or star bit if I do find a soldering iron to borrow, so that idea isn't completely out. Someone has suggested I look for a broken bike tail light and rig up an attachment with magnets, so I might poke my nose in at a local bike shop and see if they have anything broken they could spare or sell on the cheap. Magnets are easily picked up from the place I bought the headlamps originally. I'm still open to other ideas if anyone has anything else for me to consider.
Thank you to everyone who's replied so far! :cyberheart_purple:

Dear fedi, I'm looking for a needle in a haystack, but maybe you can help.
I'm looking for a song, roughly jazz with female vocals, sung by a Finnish goup or vocalist, with lyrics in English. The parts of the lyrics I remember say something like "we could be inside each other for a hwile."
Any guesses gratefully received.

What jobs can you do 100% remotely from home?
Minimal customer contact, can be very repetative, no AI like chatGPT present, and flexible.Looking for ideas for an autistic person I know.

Apps like #IceCubes place a “Messages” tab directly on their application nav bar. I wonder how many people send #DirectToots to one another here on #mastodon.
How often do you use the direct toots feature of Mastodon? 🤔
Also worth noting that Mastodon does not have a #messaging feature. Direct toots are just unlisted toots that can only be seen by those people who’s names are mentioned in the toot.
