DAE hate the #font #Calibri as much as I do? I prefer #Arial or even the more modern #Aptos. Calibri gives #ComicSans energy.

What are your go-to neutral-ish sans serif fonts that *aren't* just clones of Helvetica? These eight are my favourites. I made a whole video about them and everything (with a tl;dr at the beginning).

I have no idea why anyone would want to do this.

1. Take a ubiquitous, shitty typeface.

2. Select one of its many versions. (There’s more than one? Who knew?)

3. Design a new typeface so similar to the first “that you can’t really spot a difference. Looking at Arial and Areal should feel like refreshing a browser page. It’s the same, but it isn’t.”

Well, they succeeded on point 3.

Arial is a knockoff of Helvetica. Areal is a knockoff of a knockoff. 🤷‍♂️

In good’ol times Arial/Helvetica/something similar was found on every OS.

Not anymore! Test your #Arial-saturated website on a cheapo Android phone, and you might see a font that’s somewhat Arial/Helvetica-ish, but distinctly different-looking (for example Roboto).

As it happened, the customer _specifically_ stated that Arial should be used – so I actually needed to install it on the site. Which feels a bit silly.

So much hassle for such an ugly, cheap #Helvetica knockoff font.

Since when did Mac OS disable the ability to deactivate fonts? This was one of my favorite hacks to not see Arial anymore. #Mac #fonts #arial

While I do love my current job, I was not informed before starting that the internal communication #typeface was #Verdana.

Almost making me regret #Arial.

Question for typographers: I want to restore this work of art I made in 1999. The top glass plate, which says "Appetijtelijk" is broken and I want to recreate it. I though I typed that text on a windows computer back then. But it looks more like Helvetica than Arial. So I guess I used a Mac instead. Or is it something else? And would the current version of that font on a modern computer still work?

The font here is somehow worse than #Arial. Same slant stroke cuts, but the t's stroke is cut in the opposite orientation from Arial. So near to #Helvetica and yet so far in quality...
