  1. @davidamckay

has anybody mentioned SMOC is very similar to Smok, the polish word for "dragon", also used to name this carnivorous late triassic archosaur: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smok_waw

  2. On 08/20/2023 (last year) During a 2nd dry summer at BBSP an alligator was moving through mud in a drying 40 Acre Lake. It would move a bit, then rest. Why did the alligator move in this direction? Did it see water? Did it remember water? Birds moved easily on the mud. This gator met 2 others chased out of a deeper spot by *another* gator. Gators talked later. 90 minutes condensed into 10 minute video: rickubis.com/rick/gators_mud08 #Ichnology #Alligators #Archosaur

  3. New, small, ancient #crocodile-like #reptile described in Brazil phys.org/news/2024-06-small-an

    A new small-sized predatory #pseudosuchian #archosaur from the Middle-Late Triassic nature.com/articles/s41598-024

"Prior to the dominance of the #dinosaurs, #pseudosuchians were a common form of quadruped reptile during the #Triassic (252—201 million years ago), with some species among the largest #carnivores of the time. Smaller pseudosuchians known as #gracilisuchids lived alongside these apex predators"

  4. 04/06/2024 A young Bald Eagle was on the electrical tower at Fiorenza Park. It left the tower then circled back and landed on a small island. I moved to the tower to watch the young Eagle. An adult Eagle landed above me on the tower! I moved away a bit so I could watch it. It swallowed the fish's tail then dropped the last bit of fish. Then it "cleaned its beak" by rubbing it on the tower. During all of this, the young Eagle was still on the island. #Raptor #Eagle #Birds #Wildlife #Archosaur

  5. @markwitton I watched this mom gator and pod for weeks. It was a great example of how a mother alligator (that was probably blind) cared for a pod from multiple hatchlings. The pictured event happened after the heron stalked around the pod for hours that day. Video is here: rickubis.com/rick/herongator_1 The full story (up to end of 2023) is here: rickubis.com/rick/gatr5k.html She's still in the area, but haven't seen the pod for a while. #Alligator #Archosaur

  6. some people say
    it's a dinosaur
    other people say
    it's actually
    a non-dinosaur
    dinosauriform
    or a non-dinosauriform
    dinosauromorph
    or a pterosauromorph
    or maybe even a
    non-archosaur
    archosauriform
    or a non-archosauriform
    archosauromorph
    why
    just the other day
    I was sure
    it was a dinosaur
    or at least
    somewhere near
    the base
    of the dinosaur tree
    but keeps gettin' further
    and further away it seems

  7. 05/29/2023 At Fiorenza Park North. An Osprey was on a branch hanging over the water. I watched this one eat a fish, then wash its face by rubbing it against a branch. There is video here: rickubis.com/rick/osprey052923 and more on my Osprey page: rickubis.com/rick/brazbird2c.h #Birds #Raptors #Osprey #Archosaur #Wildlife

  8. 10/08/2023 Brazos Bend State Park This mom gator and pod had been in this spot for weeks. A G.B. Heron that had already visited appeared. For an hour, the Heron stalked the area, looking for the babies that
were chirping. Mom gator chased it, but it paced around the tree. It snatched a baby from under the tree and flew off. Mom lunged out, but too late. Video: rickubis.com/rick/herongator_1

  9. 8/20/2023 at BBSP, a 4-foot long gator crossed Spillway Trail into the plants on the North side. A minute later there was commotion and the small gator hurried back across the trail. When I carefully approached where the small gator had fled, I found a mom gator down in the water with new baby gators. She was about 100 yards East from 2 hatched nest mounds. Water is evaporating & every week the levels are dropping. But there's still some activity there. #Alligator #Archosaur #Wildlife

  10. New #archosaur species shows that precursor of #dinosaurs and #pterosaurs was armored phys.org/news/2023-07-archosau

    The earliest-diverging avemetatarsalian: a new osteoderm-bearing taxon from the #Triassic of #Madagascar academic.oup.com/zoolinnean/ad

"this fossil reveals that armor was a boomerang trait in the story of #dinosaur and #pterosaur #evolution: the group's ancestors were armored, but this was lost and then independently re-evolved multiple times"

  11. 06/11/2023 at Brazos Bend State Park, I saw 2 alligator nests on the Spillway Trail. The first was about 50 steps from the East end of the Spillway bridge; and two alligators were near it! The 2nd nest was about 50 yards further East, near bird box #18. It also had an alligator directly in front of it. Water levels near Pilant Lake look ok now, but I hope the water is still there by the end of August--when the eggs usually hatch. #ichnology #Alligator #Archosaur #crocodilian #reptiles

  12. 04/15/2023 I was at Fiorenza Park North at 9:30am. Bald Eagle was perched on a favored spot on the high-tension tower at the South edge of the park. The Eagle seemed to be watching the retainment pond, so I waited to see if it would hunt. It TOOK OFF and hunted! The event took a few seconds. 3 images are frames from this video: rickubis.com/rick/baldeagle041 More eagle stuff on page: rickubis.com/rick/brazbird2b.h #BaldEagle #Archosaur #Birds #Birdphotography #Urbanwildlife #Raptor

  13. 04/09/2023 Brazos Bend State Park, Pilant Lake. I heard alligators bellowing but I couldn't find them.
When the distant bellowing started again the gators near me started to bellow. Maybe 2 males and at least 2 females. The males were submerged deeper than usual, so there was limited "water-dancing" over them making visual I.D. difficult. Wonderful way to spend 20 minutes! The video is at this link: rickubis.com/rick/gatorbellow0 #alligator #archosaur #wildlife #animalbehavior #crocodilian

  14. Hello, I don't yet have much energy to post original content here, but I'll make an #Introduction to help me build toward that.

My research asks how animals move (mainly on land, mainly #Tetrapod #Vertebrate ones, with appendages) AND how locomotion has evolved across major transitions of #Evolution . So I am an evolutionary biomechanist.

    I've studied, for example:
