WisCon 2027
I’m delighted to announce that next Memorial Day Weekend (May 27 – 31, 2027) I’ll be a Guest of Honour, along with Annalee Newitz, at WisCon, the feminist inclusive SFF convention held every year in Madison, Wisconsin. It’s the 50th Anniversary of a convention first begun in 1977 (though, due to interruptions for reasons including but not limited to Covid) it won’t actually be the 50th WisCon. (If you’re interested in the history of Wiscon, you can read all about it here.)
I’ve been to Wiscon three times before. The first time in 1995 as Special Guest (effectively co-GoH with Barbara Hambly and Sharyn McCrumb), the second time in 1996 because Ursula was the GoH, and the third time in 2006 for the huge celebration that was WisCon 30, in which everyone who was anyone in feminist SFF showed up. And here’s the photo (by Mary Langenfeld) of previous Guests of Honour and its key to prove it!
Image description: left, a photo of 32 people (mostly women, mostly white) sitting in tiers on a staircase; right, a key listing the names of the 32 people: Melissa Scott, Steven Vincent Johnson, Ursula K. Le Guin, Suzette Haden Elgin, Mary Doria Russell, Amanda Bankler, Samuel R. Delany, Eleanor A. Arnason, Carol Emshwiller, Delia Sherman, Karen Joy Fowler, Elisabeth Vonarburg, Susanna Sturgis, Trina Robbins, Nalo Hopkinson, Ellen Kushner, Lisa Tuttle, Stu Shiftman, Emma Bull, Suzy McKee Charnas, Lois McMaster Bujold, Katherine MacLean, Kate Wilhelm, Pam Sargent, Vonda N. Mcintyre, Jane Yolen, Pat Cadigan, Jeanne Gomoll, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Terri Windling, Pat Murphy, Nicola Griffith.
I don’t think we’ll ever see such a gathering of Feminist SFF luminaries—Ursula! Vonda! Suzy! Chip! Carol! Kate! Katherine! all the stuff of legend—again. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
But over the years I stopped going. First, because it’s a difficult trip from Seattle: there are no direct flights, which for a wheelchair user multiplies the peril. Second, for quite a while I wasn’t writing long-form SFF. Third, because, well, let’s just say the convention took an odd turn, politically, which put some segments of the community at odds with others and made many less than comfortable.1 I’m happy to report, however, that (at least according to hearsay) over the last two or three years the convention seems to have sorted itself out and come back together, stronger than ever.
So I truly am delighted about this, and hope to see some of you there in May. Early-bird tickets are available now.
- Not that being uncomfortable in itself is necessarily a bad thing—sometimes we need to be pushed from our comfort zone. ↩︎

Reading feeds the brain, sure. But I just spent an hour on the S-Bahn to experience the texture and aroma of biang biang noodles for myself, after #AnnaleeNewitz so beautifully and sensuously described them in their heart- and stomach-warming novella #AutomaticNoodle. Spicy and deliciously eye-watering!

2026 Hugo Awards Reading Challenge #1 – Automatic Noodle by Annalee Newitz
I’ll be driving a lot this week, so I’m starting my Hugo Awards challenge with a couple of audiobooks which fit my schedule. The first is in the Best Novella category and by an authorI’ve been meaning to read for some time, Annalee Newitz’s Automatic Noodle. -
Huge thanks to Annalee Newitz for their support of T. K. Rex's brand new solarpunk collection, which is out in a month! Pre-orders are still available and very helpful to a small press.
“Gorgeous, hopeful, and strange, The Wildcraft Drones is a history of the next four millennia that will make you cry — in mourning, and for joy. This is the future that cyborg oak trees and pirate drones want. I do too.”

I bought a Humble Bundle of books that included those by Charlie Jane Anders & Annalee Newitz, the latter of whom wrote Automatic Noodle, which is a charming feel-good story that I enjoyed very much.
It reminded me of Murderbot, but with less killing and a whole lot more noodles... :-)

(Check out Storygraph as an alternative to Goodreads,too!)I believe the Humble Bundle is still available (in the US...) :-)

Merci-Shoutout @guenterhack, u.a.

"... every great community—even a nation—begins as an experiment, an idea that grows stronger the more we write and talk about it. Even if the Fediverse fails, it’s still worth doing. Annalee Flower Horne, a founder of the Wandering.shop Mastodon server, told me: 'We look at communities and say that if they end, then they’ve failed. But a community doesn’t have to be permanent to succeed'.”

This! Nice ending Annalee, way to stick the landing : )

"[Dan] Hon, the Code for America adviser, suggested that this could be an opportunity for shared-revenue models, in which servers offer micropayments to people whose posts are displayed next to ads."

Gross. Why can't most people seem to imagine a media system not funded by ads? Advertising, like carrier pigeons and telegrams (text messages transmitted by morse code and printed on dead tree), is a relic of a bygone media economy. Time for it to die.

"Mastodon’s moderation system is more mature. Rochko maintains a list of curated servers open to all comers, whose moderators have pledged to uphold the 'Mastodon server covenant'.”

Annalee clarifies this a few paragraphs later, but this list has absolutely nothing to do with the way the fediverse is moderated. Which is each server moderating its own members, and filtering what comes in from the rest of the fediverse;
-
One of the obstacles to understanding the #fediverse is the misleading language used to describe it;
"More than 100 apps are talking with one another in the Fediverse, including the photo-sharing site Pixelfed and the music-sharing service Funkwhale. Still, Mastodon remains the biggest. That’s partly because anyone can set up a server there using freely available software created by Mastodon’s creator, Eugen Rochko, and his small team."
