  11. Might get a small plume over us ~12am according to Firesmoke.ca, but should pass by ~10am tomorrow morning. (Better than what was previously forecasted) #yeg #abwildfire #bcwildfire

  12. Morning, #yeg!

Smoke update: AQHI down to a 4 (phew!)

Much clearer outside. We're slated to get some rain this a.m. That would really help.

Also, bc the smoke direction depends on how the winds move, it looks like the big plume will miss us 🤞🏼#abwildfire #bcwildfire

  13. Hi friends on mastodon,
Fyi there are so many alerts/updates, sometimes I don't have a chance to double-publish here and on X.

Have been posting what I can to x.com/jessicangcbc/

    Stay safe out there 😷🤞🏼 #yeg #fortmcmurray #grandeprairie #abwildfire

  14. Alberta seems to be doing better for fires but if you look deeper, it is not as good.
There are 47 active wildfires now.
In this year, they have extinguished 219 fires. The page also says how much forest area so far.
    2023--750 ha (1850 acres)
    2024--5590 ha (13800 a)

May was when it blew up for us last year. Does this mean we have a head start on the bad now? Are the crew tired?

  15. Now 66 active wildfires with 2 being OUT OF CONTROL. 762 ha burned this year ... so far. Usual limiting footnotes need be noted.

Meanwhile, Sea Surface Temp is 21.2 C.
The mean is 20.4 C and 2sigma up at 20.7 C. The mean is trending down until mid June. Related?

  16. Not happy with the trend. Currently AB has 60 active wildfires*. None of these fires are OUT OF CONTROL. This had dropped a bit under 50 a few days ago. Looking at area burned this season, we are at 615 ha or 1520 acres. High also compared to this date in 2023.

*Includes carry-over but not mutual aid. I count 6 mutual aid but it is not given as data.

  17. Is this an improvement?
For fires which have started in 2024,
    1 Out of Control
    4 Being Held
    4 Under Control

    *BUT*
There are 51 active wildfires. It is kind of a statistical tap dance of definitions. This value "Includes carryover wildfires but not mutual aid." Mutual aid fires are ones with shared responsibility with a National Park, a municipality or other province or territory.

Carryover fires started in calendar year 2023.

  18. Quick look at AB wild fires. Here we go.
51 right now with 10 active new fires this year. Two of those are OUT OF CONTROL. Burned to this date this year is a record 475 ha and not really surprised. We are in the dry of spring.

  21. At midday, the sky above was open enough I could see blue key and clouds. Well, the blue had a little grey but the clouds were a good look. The horizons were flat grey still. Now the sky has filled in and there is no texture when I look up.

Granted, we are told “Don’t Look Up.”

  22. With a wildfire cloud hanging on top of #Edmonton, the air in our building hallway is just as bad as outdoors. 😬 Time for me to give the Door Filter a shout-out because the air inside our apartment is still really good. Stay safe out there! #yeg #abWildfire #abFires #AirQuality #Alberta
